Why are you being so racist?

Right, OK, so I think we should all thank @Spade_Cooley for taking on the DDP for 2018 and 2019, and forgoing the temptation to murder the rest of us (in game) to keep the game running. He will be returning as a player in 2020, so beware the rest of you. But the game must go on, and if TMIB's nervous breakdowns told us anything, its that the role of DDP showrunner, in these days of 500 teams, has become far too big for one man. So, Official Announcement Time: Spade's spot as DDP host will be replaced in 2020 by... The DDP Rolling Committee. We hope to have 2 or 3 people involved with the data entry bit of the game. (There is 1 other person currently dwelling on this bit, but imo the more the merrier.) This involves the use of Excel, something beyond me. Incidentally, if you CAN use Excel, and are able to help out the DDP in December and January, please PM Spade Cooley and he will add you to the general discussion. There will also be 1 or 2 folk involved in the Web Site side of things, writing up obits, dealing with emails, complaints from this forum, and so on. Hi. Unsure at this point in time if that will be a two person team, or 1 person and guest obits from players. More on this later. It will be a Rolling Committee, in that people will come and go, and the game will keep running regardless. If lots of people take 1-2 year runs in the various jobs, the game will last a lot longer than hoping 1 person doing everything doesn't crack. While I shall be writing obits and dealing with complaints (the fun bit!), I see my role as more caretaker as the DDP shifts into Committee mode. As such, I will adhere to Spade's precedent and term limit my involvement to 2 years. [By the end of those 2 years, changing the individual roles should be considerably easier than it has been.] The rules in 2020 will almost certainly remain as they are. Pan Breed shall remain in the 2020 DDP for reasons of keeping the continuous entries in a row intact, though it wont be contending for a spot near the top 50. Finally a time to pick Robert Mugabe and co... Rest of the team involved will be announced ASAP. And yes, @YoungWillz, I have noted that this is us entering the Colin Baker Era of DDP showrunners! Right, I think that's everything that needs to be known at this point in time. Although again, Excel users, to the Spade PM so we can actually *have* a DDP in 2020, so that we don't overdo the Colin analogy...

LG reporting in! I had seen photos of him recently at local public events where he looked gaunt but as the throat cancer diagnosis was 10 years ago I thought perhaps he was going to weather the storm. Only 5 days ago Floors Castle had their massed Pipes and Drums day, as anyone who has read my posts knows I live beside the Duke's estate and get to see the pomp and ceremony stuff that goes on, only last weekend we had The Carriage Club of Great Britain drive by in their full regalia pretending to be Lords and Ladies as they drove along the streets of Kelso, they slightly gave away the fact they are not actually posh by the fact they had their smartphones out filming their approach to the 'Golden Gates'of Floors while dressed as nobility. The castle and its grounds are closed now until further notice but hopefully they will get their act together and reopen for the Food Festival scheduled to be held there in 2 weeks time as I have tickets for that and the food and gin samples are pretty much top of my priorities in my middle age, stuff mourning a member of the aristocracy. So, two things: 1. Hopefully I will finally get a laptop soon so I can catch up on the 4 deaths (possibly more between now and when I actually get a laptop). I know I haven’t been able to write obits for months, but even without the laptop issue I’ve been pretty busy recently IRL that prevented me from writing obits anyways. However... 2. I can confirm that I do plan on hosting this for another year. Honestly, writing is one of my passions in life, and I really liked writing about all the fascinating lives that I’ve read about, so giving this up after a year doesn’t feel right to me. Plus, I shouldn’t be as busy in the coming months, so hopefully next year’s nomination process will go smoothly again. Anyways, hopefully the obits are up really soon!

Right been floored by a chest infection this week, but, yes, Terrance Dicks is, for me, the saddest loss of 2019 on a personal level. He (and RL Stine) was one of the biggest inspirations for me to get into books as a small child. He spent 50 years being asked the exact same questions by kids (and adults who took kids TV too seriously!) and never once talked down to them, or acted like a star. He was also a top class editor in his own right, which is why he was in demand for Play of the Day and the Dickens adaptations as script editor until retirement, and why he was writing and editing kids books (hundreds of them, The Baker Street Irregulars were good fun iirc) till he was in his 70s. He was also highly unassuming about his own talents. Once asked to produce 100 minutes of TV script in 3 days to replace something that fell through, he wrote a highly engaging ripping yarn about murders in a lighthouse which holds up far better than the stuff which had months of planning. His reputation for fixing problems actually produced his fast tracked career in the 1960s, as whenever scripts went down on Crossroads or The Avengers (or both at the same time) and then later stuff at the Beeb, the call would be "Terrance'll fix it!" and then he did. And then would say anyone could have done it! In his role of getting TV on the TV, he was the best, and he's the reason Dr Who is still going on. There's also his invaluable advice to writers: "If in doubt, bung in more characters. Then... you can bump them off!" So yeah 2 quick anecdotes. One night, Terrance was working late on scripts for Dr Who's big finale that season, The Daemons. (It's basically a Hammer Horror spoof.) One set piece involved the destruction of a demonic gargoyle, and the Brigadier's quote "Chap with wings - five rounds rapid!" Naturally, Terry went to axe that line from the script, and popped into a meeting with Producer Barry Letts and the BBC head honchos. Now, Barry Letts had actually written The Daemons but under union rules of the 1970s, couldn't have his own name on it or admit to writing it, so it went under a pseudonym. Dicks goes through his cuts to the episode and adds the "lousy line 'chap with wings". Barry Letts face fell and he apparently said "Oh I really enjoyed writing tha... reading that line when I first saw the script." The line got kept. Years later, when he was leaving Doctor Who, he had a quick meeting with his successors, and ended on the line: "And of course, I'll be happy to carry on with the precedent of the last showrunner writing the first new story, unless you guys have someone else in mind." The new pair were delighted and quickly lined up a contract for 4 episodes. "And that", said Terrance Dicks with a huge smile a few decades later, "Is how I got myself more work, with a precedent I had just invented!" He was a talent and character and he'll be much missed. RIP.

It feels hypocritical to complain about people not knowing all of the popular deadpool picks and then groan about how much of a nobody someone of clear repute with UK audiences is. I can't say I knew her myself due to age and location but she clearly was beloved by those who did grow up with her work.

I blame the Cup, myself. I did hope to fall off the top row, only for the likely contender to get himself banned. Bah. Now I need Joey to pick up the pace, and if LFN and Deathray can just spam up the Politics thread with Brexit arguments for another 100, 000 posts it'd really help...

Update after more than a month, few hits, but pretty big ones - especially Kathleen Blanco and Valerie Harper. Fred Rister was picked twice if I recall correctly, and two unique hits, Tim Fischer (DI) and, surprisingly, David Koch (DDT). Randy Romero is the biggest collective D'oh in a while, I guess. I am especially surprised that at least the NYT obit hasn't come. Bob: Hey Dave, ya know the fat dude in all those old movies? Dave: John Candy? Bob: Nah man, I mean the masturbating one, Ernest Borgnine. Dave: Ok, what about him? Bob: Nuthin', just thought of him all of a sudden. Wonder what he's up to? Dave: Isn't he like old and stuff? Bob: Yah, bet he'd be worth a ton of points in deadpools. Dave: I could use some extra cash. Let's enter an online deadpool or whatever. Bob: Good thinking....Hey, googling deadpools and the fat dude's name gave me this site with a funny skull. Dave: Cool. Bob: ......Ah crap, they say he's dead and shit. Fucking hell. Quick, think of someone else. Dave: Uhh, the dude who made those Ford cars, Henry I think, has a super old wife. Betty or something. Bob: Brilliant!

One of those tidbits I never realized till recently was that both living guaranteed QO names left from 1912 (Roberta McCain the other) are surviving halves of a pair of twins.

Okay, no one raised any objections to any bonuses in the week since. I did a recheck over all the teams to make sure I didn't make any scoring errors and it turned out I did make a couple: For CaptainChorizo I did not adjust the scores of his survivors after Paul Alcock's death. This gives him 10 extra points (5 from Mary Carlisle and 5 from John McCain). For RadGuy I did not adjust the scores of his survivors after Charlotte Rae's death. This gives him 5 extra points from John McCain. These slight adjustments did not effect the dual 12th place positioning of gcreptile and Wormfarmer and I stay true to my word and treat them as the 13th placed teams. Each of them get 50 as a bonus. As for the most interesting team award, far from the first time DDT was chosen for this prize but his eclectic crew of religious figures stand out once more as the most fascinating squad. 30 extra points to him. And so here is the absolute final scoreboard for the 2018 HPDP, many congratulations to Dead Cow on his runaway win: 1. The Dead Cow 425 2. RadGuy 272.3 3. CaptainChorizo 269 4.
