Front page is up Yep, we know about the various anomalies in the text that can be fixed in a quiet week in March. The team descriptions will be updated, the names all standardised (though those with a capital surname were last picked in 2017!), and so on. Oh and if it says on the List of Teams your email doesn't work, ignore that... Obviously the LOTL and LOTM pages revert to 2019 because there isn't officially any yet. (Well, there are for the Missed but let's let Reptile sleep for a bit...) All up to date bar Samantha Last who will be in the next update. All thats left for now is to thank Grim for all the data processing over the Christmas holidays, Spade Cooley for hanging around and Agony Uncle-ing every single issue possible, and the man Reptile who sat for 4 days and worked through every single bug and fixed them. Legends, all of them.

INVERSE DEAD POOL 2020 Another new year arrives, and with that comes another round of reckoning the lingering prowess of the DDP's most popular selections. Of the 16 expiries throughout 2019, drol only selected 3 and notched his second win in the process. Rules From the list of the 50 most popular DDP picks of 2020, pick a team of 25 names who you think will survive the year. Rank your list in order of least likely to die to most likely to die. Post your team in this thread. If someone dies and they are listed on your team, then you will receive points according to their position. If your #1 pick dies you'll receive 25 points, whilst if your #25 pick dies you'll receive 1 point. If someone dies and they are not on your list, then you receive no points. In case one of the names available for entry dies before the submission deadline, you are allowed to have one sub. The sub can be anyone from the top 50 or the 51st most popular name, who will be revealed alongside the top 50. The 51st name can not be part of the original 25 if no one dies. In the case of one of your original team dying pre-deadline, the sub goes into 25th place by default, but if the sub was previously the 51st, you are allowed to change the position of the new pick. If the above scenario happens, you are also allowed to name a new sub and I will reveal the 52nd most popular name. Whoever has the lowest score at the end of the year is the winner. If two or more teams are tied at the end of the year, the tie will first be decided by who has less hits. If they have an equal amount of hits, then whoever among the teams died latest in the year, and thus came closest to being a correct prediction, will decide the winner. If said name was on multiple teams in the tie, whoever had said name lowest will win. If multiple teams had said name in the same position, the second most recently-deceased name will be referred to, and so on, until a winner is found. If, by some alignment of the stars, the tie is of either no hits or of all of the exact same hits in the exact same positions, all teams in the tie share victory. Credit to Toast for inadvertently coming up with a peach of a topic description, and of course, credit to Spade for creating this wonderful game. Credit to Dead Cow for his job as previous host, laying the framework for the Inverse Dead Pool's OP, and the idea for a "dies during entry period" rule. Credit to machotrouts for the suggestion of the latest hits factoring into tiebreakers. Alright fellows, the first version of the 2020 site is up, scoreboard here: http://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2020/scores.html At the bottom are the links to other relevant pages. The links on the homepage still link to the 2019 standings, it will be worked on shortly. By the way, yes, we know some birthdays are wrongly set at 1905. It's an excel/access issue... Also the spelling system is not streamlined. As a new committee, we focused on getting the process done for the first time on our own as quickly as possible..... substance first, the style will come! Expect some major improvements over the weekend, and check out your teams and the competition in the meantime! Edit: Current hits are processed, except for Samantha Last (yes, the birthday will be changed). Second Edit: Ah yes, the months in the "hits so far" page are in german. I think I need to get a language pack there.

Alright guys. I've noticed that nobody has appeared to continue the cup for action in 2020. I couldn't let this behemoth of a dead pool die by the wayside, so I've decided to step up to the plate and host the Deathlist Cup in 2020. I do plan to be an interim host, and hopefully we can find someone willing to host this long term starting in 2021, but for now, the cup is safe for another year. See you around after the new year...

New neighbour! I'd never seen a wild hedgehog alive until Sunday. Now it's a nightly routine to leave food out for these 3 wee guys. Tonight the two older ones were angrily snorting at each other for about half an hour. Friggin adorable.

DDP latest (in terms of being open and try and stop the annual "whens the update? Its 3rd January already!" moaners): Grim has been going through all the new celebrities added in 2020. There was 300 on the database from the pre-Christmas period, and another 620 to process of which 154 were dealt with today. This includes checking to see if they are actually alive first - more difficult than it looks for some of the obscure sods chosen! Once added to the big excel thing, me and Reptile have been going through that and actually adding the information to each name. Gender, DOB, are they alive, descriptions, etc, that sort of thing. Again, some folk (Jim Steinman) are easier to cover than others (some random Princess of no place, Europe...). Work is moving steadily onwards.

Thanks to Spade for his exceptional running of the game in the last couple of years and thanks to everyone else who has contributed in the 5 years or so that I have been participating. I have decided not to field a team in next year's DDP and to stop (or at least dramatically reduce) my interest in deathlisting for the forseeable future. I have had a couple of great sadnesses in my life in the last couple of weeks. Firstly my dog died after an operation. The short story was that he had an operation for a liver problem which went well initially but after about a day he developed serious complications from which he could not recover. I am absolutely heartbroken. He was only 17 months old and he was my best friend. A few days later my uncle committed suicide. He had some very very serious health problems in 2017 and was in hospital for some months. At a few points he wasn't expected to live but he pulled through and then lived with my wife and I for about 6 months afterwards. He had become low dealing with the after-effects of his illness and trying to cope with financial and residential insecurity at the age of 64. After these events I have no interest in taking even the smallest amount of joy, pride, or satisfaction out of anyone's death. I don't feel like spending the last few hours of 2019 trawling the internet to see who might not see out 2020. I want to spend that time watching cricket, playing bridge and training my new puppy. I still understand the interest in deathlisting and I certainly do not want to diminish anyone else's enjoyment of the game, I just know that it is not for me at the moment. Good luck to everyone in the various deadpools. I will probably check back in time to time-I'll certainly be interested to see who makes the 2020 list and I'll pop back in to congratulate 2019's very worthy DDP champion. Thanks to everyone who has helped me enjoy the site and especially to those who spend their spare time to make it all possible. Kindest Regards Dr T

BELOVED FORUM POSTER DIES 11/50 6th September 2019 Robert Mugabe, best known for his many years of insightful posts on Deathlist forums, has sadly died at 95 to give another crowdsource score. He was a familiar and loved figure on the forums, with his wit, anti-racism posts, and long friendship with Deathray who recently married Neil Kinnock’s Welsh Constituency. He also had a bit of a tenuous relationship with your crowdsource host, but you can't please everyone. In these sad Post Hein days, this is the first time we’ve had 100% confirmation of the death of a Deathlist poster, since the death of forum admin Paul Bearer in 2013. Mugabe will be fondly remembered by all fans of his Swingtime Band. PS It has just reached us that Robert Mugabe was in fact a mass murdering embezzling dictator who ran roughshod over his own people for nearly 40 years. The things that people can get away with, while pretending to be a friendly member of the online community, never cease to shock. Side note: apart from a few minor tweaks this obit was the work of msc, not me. Since he clearly wanted this obit published for the longest time and I did one of his obits for Stan Lee back in 2018, I decided to give him one obit. Now I'm waiting for the why are you so racist comments...

Like every summer, I'm going to Poland with my family. This time for about 2 and 1/2 weeks. Right in time for my 18th birthday too, me and my friend over there got big plans. My flight leaves tomorrow - Saturday - from Chicago O'Hare at 17:25 to Warsaw (LO 2), and I have an hour layover there before I land in Rzeszów (LO 3809) at 11:30 local time Sunday. That info of course being for Cat in case he wants to track. I get back on August 1st. Don't think I'll be visiting the forums during my vacation. ABC title defense team already submitted. So this is goodbye for now.

Random picture of Derby. Entries for the 2020 Derby Dead Pool are now open! Emails appear to be very slow sending out, if you haven't received one by, idk, tomorrow, let the Cmme know. I'll let our other members introduce themselves below, especially as they are doing the Data Entry bit, so you can shower them with bribes and likes... Rules are as before, but The Herald newspaper returns as a Qualifying Obit. As do the ITV local pages, which weren't already one on the 2019 list.

No, you're full of shit. Don't presume to tell us Brits whether a British personality is a household name in British households, because you are not in a position to judge. Whether they are known to Americans is irrelevant.

@MikeM, I think I speak for all of us when I say we are saddened by your loss. I've been searching on a regular basis for her TIYL episode for you but to no avail. I'll keep looking. R.I.P. Sheila.

The dead centre of Derby no less. Hi - I'm the idiot who thought the easy bit would be taking all the entries and entering them into the spreadsheet etc - once that's done in about July though (although perhaps I shouldn't joke till I've successfully loaded a few) I get to put my feet up and leave it to the other two. As I'm going to be seeing everyone's teams and entering them into the spreadsheet I've already sent my team to YW. Wish us luck (and accuracy and attention to detail and humorous obit writing and a solid IT platform...…)

A couple of shooters including Tarrant both stated they wanted gun control in the USA as that would lead to civil war. Let's be real here inacting gun control could kill millions of Americans and end America as we know it with a civil war. Are all Americans going to happily give up guns? No Will there be a civil war most probably yes. Will many conservative army soldiers support gun control or rally against it? Will the police support it? America is a long cry from 1861. The American standing military would have no difficulty taking down your average bubba-redneck idiot sitting in his handmade bunker under his Confederate battle flag and “The South Will Rise Again” banner. I live in Texas. I know these people. They can take an AR-15 into a WalMart full of unprotected civilians but they will pale when they are staring down a M109 Howitzer. Mass shooters are cowards. Will people resist giving in their guns? Very few people have suggested that gun owners give up their guns and the most reasonable who have only want the assault weapons off the streets. American gun control legislation is generally very middle of the road – the NRA is the agency of hyperbole here. What happens to people living in rural areas many miles from police how do they defend themselves from armed robbers? They will have their guns. See above. However, this argument is logically fallacious as the reason most people who live rurally in the US do so, at least in part, because there is little to no crime. Any gun control will be seen as unconstitutional anyway and thrown out of the courts. The supreme Court if Ginsburg dies will always vote to keep guns for at least 30 years. Again. You are arguing from an extreme position that is driven by the hyperbole of the NRA. If you look at the legislative history in the US concerning gun control – and there are multiple timelines on the internet – will demonstrate that legislation swings a little left in response to a tragedy, then swings a little right to compensate, then settles back in the middle. And there is precious little effective legislation after the 1930s. It takes 15 years for legislation to wend its way through the US courts and enter the Supreme Court. I find it the height of ridiculousness to make decisions based on the makeup of the court. Another truism is that Supreme Court justices are free agents. They tend to vote their intellect and their understanding of the Constitution even though they played most Senators for fools in their confirmation hearings. See Texas v Johnson. Will police be disarmed? If yes then the only one armed are the law breaking criminals and the army. If no then you will still have cops killing civilians. American police will never be disarmed. It's not even an issue worth considering. See reductio ad absurdum. For every mass shooter there's about 5 of these. Gun control just takes the guns for the weak and law abiding citizens. How many below and many more would of turned into murders? In total those saved by guns and those killed in random mass shootings probably balance each other out. Alot are female as well were the feminists at? Actually, find significant instances of armed Americans, even in Texas, who have intervened and taken down a domestic terrorist. There ain't very many. An FBI study in 2014 showed that while five of 160 active shooter situations between 2000 – 2013 had civilians effectively exchanging gunfire with the shooter, 21 were handled by unarmed bystanders. Since 2014, the trend has been more to the ineffectiveness of civilian gun owners, with the exception of Sutherland Springs – but the damage was done by the time that intervention happened. My father was a five time combat veteran and he told me something very interesting. First, the instinct is to flee in self preservation. Second, if that urge is defeated, simply facing someone you know wants your life can send you back to fleeing. Third, if you can push through that, a significant number of people, no matter their rhetoric at the backyard barbecue, simply can not kill even to save their own lives. This, he said, is what American military training is designed to break down. Civilians generally do not have that training. They have a lot of hubris, though, I’ll grant you. If I had a dollar for every time I heard some Texas redneck wannabe talking about what he'd do if he saw a bad guy I'd be lounging in Aruba. As far as women go, according to the FBI, 7.6% of all firearm homicides in the US are committed by women, and since 2000 nine women have committed mass shootings. In addition, they tend to be armed with handguns, not assault rifles, and their targets tend to be people and places with connections to them. That’s a glass ceiling I’ll keep, thank you. Americans will always have guns, but we have got to find a way to effectively drive down the rate of mass shootings. We sacrifice children on the altar of the Second Amendment. This is unacceptable to sane people. Arming every man, woman, and child is not practical nor is it the answer – it didn’t work on the frontier and it is not helping now. All that this has demonstrated is that Congress is firmly in the pocket of the NRA and that assault weapons exist for one reason and one reason alone. The NRA has effectively replaced the concept of “well regulated militia” with the individual, negating the intent of the second amendment while strengthening it, oddly enough. They have mastered the rhetoric. There is no issue that is so dangerous it can’t be talked about, but it requires people of good faith to talk about it in good faith. That’s where we are lacking in Washington right now. That’s why we will continue to die.
