Oh, good news: what seems like the annual diatribe about Fairytale of New York is now open for business this year! The BBC are split on whether to play the completely original version or not; Radio 2 are, Radio 6 Music are leaving it up to the individual DJs and Radio 1 are playing a version where ‘slut’ is no longer audible and the line ‘you cheap lousy faggot’ is replaced with an alternative version where Kirsty MacColl instead sang ‘you’re cheap and you’re haggard’. My understanding is that they’ve decided that shows with younger audiences may not be familiar with the song and may misunderstand the sentiment (faggot, of course, being Irish slang for a layabout in this context and not the homophobic slur), and ‘slut’ being just one pejorative word out of many thrown about by, as per the theme of the song, embittered, nasty drunks, rather than just for the sake of being derogatory. Some may not see that. So this, in itself, is not where the problem lies. Though I must admit, as one of the LGBTs it’s supposedly at risk of upsetting, the word ‘faggot’ hasn’t bother me one fucking mite, it’s quite a funny word, particularly in this completely unrelated context, but that’s beside the point. But all this has succeeded in doing is it’s stirred some shit, basically. People aren’t talking about different contexts, or societal attitudes and inclusivity 35 years ago compared to today. It’s simply become another ‘snowflake’ versus ‘gammon’ shit slinging match, where the cream of each crop (the grossly over-offended and the raging bigots who scream when yet another poison of society is attacked) are the main infuriating, triggering, hateful voices heard. It’s done nothing for attitudes and inclusivity, as was the idea of deleting ‘slut’ and ‘faggot’, rather it’s exacerbated the problem. I wouldn’t be surprised now if Laurence Fox released a cover version as a retort where every single word has been replaced with a homophobic slur. This is all an act that should’ve stayed as a thought, as the context will now probably never be understood, rather just buried in the bile from bigots from one side and the tears of the offended-by-proxy wing of society from the other. All that being said, I could also say that the band themselves have disowned the two words, and the song doesn’t noticeably change, and this does just seem like a thinly-veiled way of hanging on to things that could be offensive in a fairly bilious way. But that might turn a considered argument into a woke snowflake rant, so I won’t say that.

Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with this Rosemary Harris? Genuinely had never heard of her before about a week ago (although it turns out I do know her work in the Spiderman films) but now she's been mentioned three times in this thread and has her own thread started a few days ago...despite there being absolutely nothing wrong with her as far as we know (I get it, she's 93). Am I missing something? I'd be tempted to suggest many of the mentions come from recent forum joiners, but I choose not to become part of the tinfoil hat brigade and take people on face value.

Research suggests that The Southgate Club (near the tube station) claims ancestry with the New Southgate SC, whether that's 100% official or just "in the spirit of" I'm not sure. Its website contains a history of the club that mentions its tradition of snooker (Doug Montjoy apparently used to play there and the first table was purchased for the club by the guy who set up the Lipton Tea Company), but nothing on the arrers.

There's a potential project over at the A Night To Remember thread, if anyone fancies a go. It has emerged that scores more uncredited cast members have been added to the list at IMDB since the topic was started. I've added the extra names with year of death where given. In many cases there are no details of year of birth or death. A few have year of birth only, which I've entered in red. I've started to add the IMDB links, am having to do it manually. UPDATE: Links added. Scroll down to the second list. https://forums.deathlist.net/topic/8124-a-night-to-remember/?do=findComment&comment=170718

Ok, let's see if I can help with the first year just now. 1917: Marsha Hunt (IMDb) actress - still alive as of March as per this BBC article about her, definitely won't die off grid. Don Marion (IMDb) silent film actor - interesting case. Reported dead in a 2012 book (and several places give this as a death date) but Wikipedia says this is not correct and this article from Arizona (where he is now living) recognises him in their 32nd annual 'Salute to Centenarians' event. Nothing since that I can find so assume he's still alive. Can't find anything for the 33rd annual 'Salute to Centenarians' - probably cancelled because of the 'rona. Daphne Courtney (IMDb) actress - South African-born actress in B-movies in the 30s and 40s. Married Scottish actor Hugh McDermott in 1936 in London (date found online and confirmed by Ancestry). Full name Daphne Ralda Courtenay-Hicks. Have found this record that would match for her husband's death in 1999 (also born 1917) in Droitwich, Worcestershire - no matching death for Daphne though. Still, it's a start? Eleanor Hansen (IMDb) actress - American actress from Indiana, USA, roles in the 30s and early 40s only, mostly uncredited. Not turned much up on her, she disappears after the 40s and I don't have access to US records to trace marriage, etc. Eddie Infante (IMDb) actor and director - Filipino actor with long list of credits from the 1930s up to 1995 (when he'd have been nearly 80). Nothing since and I can't find any mention of him anywhere on Google in either English or Spanish. Full name Jesus Eduardo Ferriol Infante. Antonio Gradoli (IMDb) actor - Italian actor with credits from the 30s to the late 60s. Italian Wiki also lists him as alive. Also known as Anthony Gradwell - I think only in English dubs of European films? Another one who disappears without trace as far as I can see. That wasn't much use really was it? It started so well, but I've not found anything definitively killing any of them but neither can I prove for sure that most of them are alive.

Yeah I did originally have Mackem written in my post but changed it to Geordie so we could try and pin the crimes on Gadget and unearth the biggest ever miscarriage of UK justice. I was at High School nr Manchester at the time and remember them playing us the Wearside Jack tapes. Scary stuff. Just reading about John Humble on Wiki Described as an unemployed labourer at the time of his arrest at home, Humble and his brother were so inebriated that the police were required to wait almost a day before he could be interviewed and was in shock when he revived needing to be told he was now in police custody What a guy

James Watson is not a racist. That whole thing got blown way out of proportion and it shows how oversensitive people have become on anything concerning race and how we can’t have a mature conversation about it without resorting to finger pointing and name calling. One of his studies looked at genetic differences between different races, and one factor he looked at was measures of intelligence. Now, I’m all for calling out racists when pseudo science is concerned e.g. social Darwinism employed by the Nazis, but when a study uses true scientific method, we can’t simply refuse to acknowledge its findings because we don’t like the results and then the general conclusions arrived from it. Ofc it was ONE study, and there have been many, and MOST of them say that there are no significant differences in intellect between races. However, is it really hard to believe that there COULD be? For millennia many groups of humans were completely isolated from one another on this planet. It follows that they would have evolved separately and differently according to thousands of situational factors. Anyway, I don’t believe in shooting the messenger. It is the job of scientists to uncover the truth. Facts don’t care about feelings at the end of the day.
