The Hartlepool doors have shut. I did a final round of checking to make sure all the scoring was properly accounted for and spotted the_engineer's base scores were not adjusted after Lee Kerslake's death, meaning he nets an extra 8 points from Trebek. And that's that. This hectic year of covid and numerous celeb deaths led to a number of classic deadpooling seasons, and the eclectic Hartlepool tradition was not exempt. Many of the popular hits carried bonuses: Terry Jones did panto and Morris danced. Alex Trebek appeared on Hollywood Squares. Frankie Banali, Genesis P-Orridge, and Lee Kerslake all drummed. Daniel arap Moi committed crimes against humanity, that lovable ol' rascal. After a year with a number of twists and turns, it was @maryportfuncity who came out on top for a record fourth time. He had previously been tied with football_fan for the most HPDP wins. However it was no easy win for him, with several quality teams trading the lead and mpfc needing a dramatic laaaaaate QO to seal the deal. Sultan Qaboos of Oman was the first hit of the year, and marked a lucrative start for a number of teams, mpfc among them. Shortly afterwards was the death of mpfc's unique Danish F1 racer Tom Belso, whose incoming death was forewarned hereabouts by motorsport guru OoO but long failed to garner any attention from the HPDP QOs. YorkshireBanker took the lead by late January, buoyed by the deaths of Terry Jones and his mascot, Rangers great Bobby Brown. Though RadGuy touched the summit after the death of Daniel arap Moi, YB reclaimed it within a month through two classy uniques - NASA maths wiz Katherine Johnson and physicist Freeman Dyson (albeit it took me months to twig Dyson was a hit, meaning there was a mirage lead for mpfc during this time...). Though Genesis P-Orridge allowed Rad to stay in the conversation a bit longer, his well had mostly dried up and the stage seemed to be set for a mpfc vs YB narrative. The deaths of Vera Lynn and unique panto-er Johnny Beattie further padded YB's lead. However mpfc had his own steady trickle of hits after Belso that allowed him to keep competitive even with the seeming non QO. His post-Belso comeback route was charted through Terry Jones, Paul Farnes, Genesis P-Orridge, Judy Dyble, and finally Lee Kerslake, whose death meant mpfc led by a mere three points. The great Alex Trebek, the most popular pick of the 2020 HPDP, was not selected by mpfc however, so his death returned YB to the lead. There were two dramatic twists in December that cemented the game as a classic. First was Toast's remarkable hit with Barbara Windsor. Toast was behind the lead by over 100 points, and seemed unlikely to close the gap. But due to Windsor's high base points, uniqueness, and Squares/panto bonuses, the total value of 136 was enough to sneak Toast into the lead. Unfortunately for her, it was not enough to fend off a QO for Tom Belso, which dramatically cropped up in late December via the annual BBC sports deaths round up, and propelled mpfc back to the top for keeps. Strangely, if this year's DDP QOs were applied to 2020, we would have had a very different narrative as Tom Belso got a Yahoo UK obit very quickly. The top 5 was rounded out by Book, whose sturdy team was buoyed by wisely placing Trebek last, and DeathByArsenic, whose 9/12 hit rate was extra impressive for all but two of his picks were based in France and were all picked on age. Banana placed 13th and so peels the 50 point bonus. As for the most interesting team bonus. Well, it baffled me greatly that theoldlady convincingly won 2019 and erm... included Celine Dion in her title defense. Stunningly, a team with Celine Dion on it did not win, but the amusement value is enough for me to throw 20 points her way. The final scoreboard is below. Alright everyone, time for the final update of the competition. New hits: Pierre Cardin, and Ronnie Atkins MP. Also, I think when Pedro picked "Sen. Mike Andrew" he was actually meaning "Sen. Mark Andrews", the US senator who got a NYT obit but not a QO for the DDP. So it's another hit for him. Plus, Tom Belso received the very late year-end obit, and it's pretty significant in that Banana snatches a place on the podium away from me at the last second by a single point! Still, in the end, the top remains unchanged and Death Impends wins the competition by a hair's breadth. Congratulations Death Impends! Thanks everyone for playing! Rank Team Score 1 Death Impends 1246 2 Joey Russ 1244 3 Banana 1166 4 gcreptile 1165 5 msc 1151 6 Cpt. Well, the beginning, as is usual, was a free for all, with several different people in the lead. Yet, Death Impends was already prominent from mid-February on. My luck of obits with Martino Sclavi and Rory Gilsenan soon ran out, and with the non-obit of Ed Genson I lost contact to the top while Death Impends kept scoring steadily - not always the super young people, but dead is dead. Though the one pick that stands apart is Ronald Shurer, a name I know she is particularly proud of picking, and who actually managed to open up the lead that lasted until the end of the year. But while the distance kept growing until mid-year, it then reversed back because of a couple of clever picks by Joey Russ who slowly crept up the scoreboard. It was his joker pick of Pat Smullen who turned it into a race - and those joker points had almost been crucial. Yoo Sang-Chul, Lee Noble and Tom Smith didn't score, Pat Smullen did. Still, Death Impends ends the year with the most hits, and without the joker hit. So she rightly recaptured the trophy after having lead for about 8 months this year. Below the very top we also see the strong podium finish by Banana, who fought RadGuy, Joey, msc and then finally me for that spot. I am expecting him to soon reach that point where the "research vault" is big enough to regularly win several deadpools a year. Winning the big pools, i.e. 20 picks or more, and especially Alt Obits and Death By Numbers, requires a lot of research, you need the 2-3 hits you carry over from people picked in the past. Banana might now be at the point where a win here and there is a good possibility. The nerve and talent is obviously there. Joey might have just arrived at that point last year, winning Alt Obits and missing out here by measly two points. So congratulations on that progress! I expect more from now on ;).

Well, the final reckoning is now due. What a year! Actually a half year but it seemed like a year! Not clear cut by any stretch of the imagination, and a good competition for most. Indeed, it's been my best year pointswise, by luck rather than by design. But the lights have dimmed, the players have left for their 2021 competitions and it falls to me to do the final tally, which is as follows. If you entered last year, your position and points total is shown in brackets after your total for this year. Not strictly comparable, given the introduction of the monthly card roulette table, but hey...Even so, points are relatively down overall on last year. Anyway, the final table looks like this: 1st - Perhaps - 1408 Points 2nd - Sean - 1359 Points (=13th, 710) 3rd - Death Impends - 1244 Points (=5th, 1435) 4th - Joey Russ - 1241 Points (2nd, 1712) 5th - An Fear Beag - 1240 Points 6th - Grim Up North - 1086 Points (3rd, 1485) 7th - msc - 996 Points (=8th, 930) 8th - The Quim Reaper - 986 Points 9th - gcreptile - 958 Points (4th, 1443) 10th - YoungWillz - 872 Points (17th, 613) 11th - DeathByArsenic - 809 Points (21st, 406) =12th - Banana - 808 Points (7th, 1069) =12th - Captain Chorizo - 808 Points (1st, 2000) 14th - theoldlady - 803 Points (18th, 600) 15th - Clorox Bleachman - 678 Points (=5th, 1435) 16th - The Old Crem - 675 Points (10th, 835) 17th - Yorkshire Banker - 620 Points (16th, 674) 18th - Miracle Aligner - 560 Points 19th - Bibliogryphon - 516 Points (24th, 100) 20th - Great Uncle Bulgaria - 512 Points (22nd, 332) 21st - JoeMoneypenny - 498 Points 22nd - markb4 - 482 Points 23rd - Toast - 364 Points (20th, 436) 24th - CalebH - 180 Points 25th - Gooseberry Crumble - 158 Points (23rd, 305) 26th - Guy From Future - 48 Points So it is with some pride I pass the trophy for the 4th Deathlist Poker Tournament to a rookie first time player - PERHAPS. Congratulations to you and well done against the big beasts of the poker tables and indeed deadpooling in general. I have to note big commiserations to Sean, who had his lead snatched away at the death. (Well, it's a bloody dead pool!). And also to inform him that I have lowered the extra security doors, in case he marches upon our beloved casino, shouting "Stop The Steal!" The lead had been held at various points by Grim Up North, Joey Russ, Death Impends and An Fear Beag, but despite the jostling, their team members just couldn't come through. If you have improved on your placing and/or scores, well done, if not, that's the turn of the card, the swish of the Reaper's scythe, and hey, there is always next time. Our Hall of Fame now reads as follows: 2017 - Death Impends 2018 - Death Impends 2019 - Captain Chorizo 2020 - Perhaps. And now it falls to me to hand over the Hall of Shame prize, the hanging of the portrait in the gents. (Next year, it will be the toilet for the physically challenged, as I'm running out of cubicles - must get an extension built!). This is normally awarded to the player who has essentially cut their own throat, whether by the way picks have been made or non-obiting. I have decided that this meaningless award is to be shared this year. There is no getting away from the fact that if a player calls himself Guy From Future, you'd expect them to get at least one main team member dead and obiting, in fact you'd expect a lot of hits. The majority of points came from the monthly draw! Deservedly last, the management will expect better time travelling skills to be reflected in his score IN THE FUTURE. There is also no doubt that msc had three non-obiting hits in their main team. While the Casino appreciates the thrill and danger of the choices of deceased, you have to know you are going to get those obits in. And had they come in, msc would have had a flush, pairs, three of a kind and a full house on top of the standard hit score and would have won the entire game. So it's a joint portrait this year. Hall of Shame 2017 - Joey Russ 2018 - Joey Russ 2019 - Sir Creep 2020 - Guy From Future & msc. And we are done! Let's see if we open up later in 2021, and how long we are open for.....

Basically, its a judgment call. Some have imdb/Wiki/blatant newsbait worthiness which makes it easier, but some are basically asking the Cmme how acceptable they think a pick is. tbh if you're going to pick a person so on the line they need a judgement call, then a judgement call is what you need to accept.

Astonished that I accidentally won this considering the fierce competition from the regular deadpoolers. As a newbie this has been one of the most enjoyable pools I've entered thus far and I can't wait to play this year to defend my fluke. Sorry Sean.

Only because he's realised he's gone too far and there are consequences. He's trying to save his own skin as per usual. This was the speech that he needed to make yesterday. Damage is done. And when he realises that, is he really going to change? Listening to some of the Republicans in Congress, it's already business as usual again.

Anyway thank you for your congratulations.

I thought that was for socio-political reasons, not biological? Regardless of race, she was a celebrity, which comes with a few advantages in terms of living standards...In any case, it worked out for you, so congrats on your 11 points. If "ethnic minority" is a mealy-mouthed way of saying she was black, then it opens the possibility of Vitamin D deficiency, which can worsen the effects of Covid-19. The darker the skin, the less efficient it is at processing sunlight into Vitamin D, which is presumably why people who migrated further from the equator evolved lighter skin. So yes, there is a biological factor, but it doesn't apply to all "ethnic minorities". Like it or not, this really is about how dark your skin is. We're all deficient in Vit D in the winter anyway if we depend on exposure to sunlight.

Updated for a number of hits. Two teams took some big leaps: Bibliogryphon came from zilch zero nada nothing to +12 points; besting that was Toast, who catapulted from a mere 8 points to 24, and in sole possession of 4th place, thanks to three hits, including a pair of solo hits! I chose films I have enjoyed and whose cast are getting on in years. This time round there were two films in the running and I wished I had chosen the other one as I would have had a hit. [Not saying who or which film as I may still use it next time round] I chose Nobody Runs Forever for sentimental reasons as well as for its elderly cast. I was the last film I watched with my dad before he got ill.

Does being hopeful work better in bold? I'll have to try that because as ever I'm getting nowhere at all in standard Times New Roman. Perhaps I'll try impact even Comic Sans. Yes, I'm at a bit of a loose end for a minute.

    1. I don't think there's a chance. Calment's age is such an outlier that even that has gone under dispute recently. The only reason she was verified is because there was such an extensive background of records to back up her claimed age, which all of these claimants don't have. 2. See above. 3. It's very unpredictable to say at such an old age, but having a healthy lifestyle definitely makes the odds more likely. 4. Some scientists have actually placed an upper limit on human lifespan at around 125 or 130, though this is also a point of dispute, and we won't be able to truly tell until an apt amount of medical advances are made. 5. The Gerontology Research Group at https://grg.org/ should host or at least link to a few articles or publications relating to Gerontology. 6. Again, unpredictable, but if any of the currently living supercenteneranians are to pull it off, Tanaka has the best chance. When she took the spot of oldest living person, people noted how healthy she seemed for her age.
