  2. Out of interest, how come Salinger gets a picture from when he was famous, but poor Michael gets a photo from just after he died?


    Salinger was pretty much a recluse. Do any later photographs of him exist?

    Former Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell, one of the first women to lead a major U.S. newspaper, died in an accident involving an automobile in New Zealand on Saturday, according to her family. She was 68.






    Michael Dwyer, the film correspondent of The Irish Times , has died at the age of 58 following an illness.

    Danish police shoot intruder at cartoonist's home


    Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked an international row.


    Mr Westergaard was at home in Aarhus when a man broke in and threatened him. He pressed a panic button and police entered the house and shot the man.


    Danish officials said the intruder was a 28-year-old Somali linked to the radical Islamist al-Shabab militia

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- John S. Wilder, a wily, eccentric and towering figure in Tennessee politics as lieutenant governor/Senate speaker for 36 years, died early Friday at a Memphis hospital. He was 88.






    Lucknow, Jan 2 (IANS) Renowned wildlife enthusiast and author Billy Arjan Singh died at his home - Tiger Haven - in the vicinity of the famous Dudhwa National Park, about 250 km from here, late Friday night. He was 94.






    Leading upcountry trade unionist and politician Periyasami Chandrasekaran has passed away, hospital sources said.


    He was 52.


    Mr. Chandrasekaran died, following a brief illness, at a private hospital in Colombo in the early hours of this morning (Jan. 01).


    He was leader of the Upcountry People's Front and government minister of community development and social inequity eradication.
