Gladys Powers, 108, is still hanging in there as both the last surviving female vet of the war, and the last surviving Canadian vet. Its amazing how we've already lost 25 veterans this year - I am anticipating 12 or so more. And she is in my WeatherPoolMan90.
Her status is confusing, however.

Brilliant!
I really hope that is one of us!

May be a daft question, but if that figure is just GB & NI, then what about those living in what is now the Republic of Ireland?
0.
There is one fellow though, Dan Keating, who fought in a WWI era war, that being the one for Irish Independence. Keating was shooting at the English as long ago as 1919.
Ah, yes. Oddly I landed on his Wiki article a while back while reading about Republican Sinn Fein.
I may disagree with his methods and politics, but I have to admire him for standing up for what he believes in at such a grand old age:
To this day he refuses to accept a state pension because he considers the 26-county Republic of Ireland an illegitimate state which usurped the 1916 Irish Republic. In 2002 he refused the state's standard €2,500 award to centenarians from president Mary McAleese.

Oh, he's 105, by the way!

It's only friend of a friend stuff but......allegedly Dickie might return to acting this summer. I'd been banging on about him over a pint a while back and a fellow drinker who - like - knows somebody, told me his agent was getting offers for him and they were considering one of them seriously. I am, of course, pinning people against walls to find out more so's I can post it here.A 90 minute drama type programme - with a suggestion that although his character will be mentioned lots and lots, he won't have an over-exerting amount of screentime (like with Khan in Star Trek II, I suppose) and if it goes well there is the offer (being used as a carrot) of a MATH/RN "lookback" - like they've just done with 'Allo, 'Allo.
Though apparently this could just be a case of the agent flying a few kites to try and secure a deal for some of their other clients. Interesting, though, but it isn't the first time the rumour has flown around.

Bobby Robson gave an inspirational pre match speech to Gretna this afternoon, Gretna lost 0-2. Here's a photo of him taken this very day:The man standing to his right, is none other than Brookes Mileson, who I believe has his own thread somewhere on this forum.
Brooks Mileson indeed has his own thread and was lucky to survive when his arse exploded earlier in the season.
Interesting to see who goes first.

George Cohen does have history...
"His main return to the public eye came in the 1980s when he fought and won his battle with stomach cancer, which lasted 14 years."
-
So Gretna managed to win, . Watch them tumble straight back down.To be fair, there are worse teams in the SPL and one of them will still be there next season - Pars or Buddies.
And that must be the closest league finish since Liverpool and Arsenal in the 80s.

Congrats to CP on his victory; just been on the new site. Pretty good selections I'd say, some corkers, obviously been some midnight oil burned. That is your team with Kirsty Howard in, yes?
I was tempted to go for a "Duke only" theme but after Wellington I changed my mind. At least I've got the youngest average age at 60.9, though...
-
To sort up any future confusion, here is the list of the theme team and unique pick bonuses that each team will receive:Arbeit Macht Frei: Cell Block H - 6 points (theme, unique)
Born in Belgium, Dead in 2007 - 6 points (theme, unique)
Double D Denotes Death - 6 points (theme, unique)
Dr. Hackenslash - 5 points (theme)
Handrejka - 5 points (theme)
Weatherman90 - 5 points (theme)
Everyone else, of course, still receives the 1 pt bonus for every dead unique pick.
Is there any reason why I have five points, not six? Given my theme is "Unique picks," surely I should have the extra point?
-
A very varuied mix of picks.
And only one person has chosen a 12-year-old
-
Looks like John Tenta gave you the points you needed, CP - wonder if anyone has gone for any wrestlers this year...
-
Just hours to go...
I'm moist with anticipation. Just hope enough of them cark it...
-
Wasn't there a bit of a thingy a few years ago about the exact position of some ship or other? My thoughts now are what they were then - that woman asking the questions was a bleeding-heart liberal who should have been shot
-
As for the unique theme concept of Dr. Hackenslash - I will allow it as long as you are the only team to have 10/10 unique picks - so far you are.
As and when you know the Doc's team why not just get a friend to pick one of his picks and put it in their team
The problem would be is that nearly all of my picks are so odd, to be honest, that it would be blatant
Great idea having a DP where all the picks need is an entry on Wikipedia...
-
Yeah, me too, not that I'm as confident as the good doctor.
Mebbe the dearth of DP entries is a result of the plethora of pools elsewhere, Derby, Hartlepool, Isle of Man etc.
I'm hoping I've managed the most odd "Team Theme" of the lot too.
My theme is "The picks are all unique picks"
Yeah, but there's four days to go. Good luck hangin' on to the uniqueness of them picks Dr Hack.
Trust me, I wouldn't even attempt it unless some of my picks were so stupidly obscure...

Well, I've entered and I'm very confident this time...

Ernie Ladd has passed away.
He was 68 and had cancer since 2004.
Looking like a bad year for wrestlers, so far...

I'm freeeeeee.....

Maryport never had a proper ground but the same joke has done the rounds about Workington - just down the road - for years. Any football fans in Maryport would sooner go thirty odd miles to Carlisle than a couple of stops down the train line, which takes you just beyond Borough Park; home of Workington Reds.
Or a couple more train stops across the border

liberal democrats - remove their hairtabloid journalists - stamp on their toes then roast them on a spit
The first you have my full support, but as for the second...
