    Missing In Action

I had a sinking feeling when they went missing. The wreckage of an Indonesian Navy submarine missing since Wednesday has been found on the sea floor and all its 53 crew are confirmed dead, Indonesia military commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said Sunday. The news came a day after debris believed to be from the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine was found floating about two miles from the submarine's last known location in the Bali Strait, leading military officials to change the vessel's status from missing to sunk. 7. Seems I've come across a gap in our DL pages where we have forgotten our brothers and sisters of the world of flora and fauna. Certainly the odd story about some 1000-yr old tree getting knicked, or Mrs. Moistbridge's prize rose garden being destroyed, etc etc. And with that... Children at Napier Central School (Hawke's Bay, NZ) are asking "who would do such a thing?" after six trees on the grounds were intentionally poisoned. Holes were drilled into the bases of at least six trees including native pohutukawa and puriri - but the deliberate damage was discovered only when....[o]ne parent saw half-inch holes around the base. The trees have stood along the school's fence line for about 60 years. SC

Former major league player and coach Tom Robson has died. He was 75. Taken by the Mets on the 50th round of the 1967 amateur draft, Mr. Robson played two seasons in the major leagues, both with the Texas Rangers. He batted .208 with four RBIs over 23 games and 54 plate appearances in 1974 and ‘75, playing first base and designated hitter. A real hot mess going on with this card of his. SC

Joe Long, the bassist for the iconic band the Four Seasons, died Thursday at age 88. Long had reportedly been recently struggling with COVID-19, but the cause of his death is unclear. Long joined the Four Seasons in 1965 after the band was looking to replace their original bassist, Nick Massi, who had been temporarily replaced by Charles Calello. I would have bet my life there was a post about Stevie D Davis and his liver cancer a few years back. Maybe it was a name on some list I held back, seeing as I know Keith Jackson of the Glass Heroes and probably heard about Davis’s plight there. Speaking of life, Steve Davis doesn’t have any. Age 64. Daren Jorgenson, a Winnipeg pharmacist who made headlines for years due to his business ventures and legal troubles has died. He made his fortune in the online pharmacy industry, which was booming around 2000, and sold his companies in 2006. At its peak in the mid-2000s, Manitoba, with about three per cent of Canada’s population, made up 75 per cent of the Internet pharmacy business in Canada. It’s a short yet fascinating obit about this character. I know y’all don’t read too many of these; reward yourself by reading this obit. SC

Didn't see a dedicated topic for those who give back, so here we are. One of the biggest names in my hometown of Detroit, Alfred Taubman has died. "A. Alfred Taubman's self-made wealth as a pioneer who helped revolutionize how America shops fueled a lifetime of varied philanthropy and support for civic institution and the arts, including his deep commitment to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Taubman, the Pontiac native who helped bring malls to America and who became one of Michigan's most important donors to museums and universities, died Friday of a heart attack in his home in Bloomfield Hills, said Christopher Tennyson of the Office of A. Alfred Taubman. He was 91." He once owned Sotheby's auction house. SC http://www.freep.com/story/money/business/michigan/2015/04/18/a-alfred-taubman-dies-obit/25977167/
