Gonna run one of the most important cities in the world - can't even fill in the application forms properly. What a melt.

Last round went largely to plan as best as it could for me. I'd swap Manics for Kylie (she had some proper bangers in the noughties - this is the first round she doesn't feature in!) but otherwise I've no real complaints with the ones that went through.

    Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

It is 3 years since the last round of this game started and nearly a year since it finished but with another season about to commence and sacking taking place at an astonishing rate these days, surely the next round shouldn't last as long! The last game took long enough to finish that I ended up coming out on top, and with no Miracle Aligner around, and the support of Buffalo Phil and Great Uncle Bulgaria, I am happy to step into the breach of running what should be a relatively stress-free game (for everyone apart from those whose jobs are at stake!) After all, I've lurked around here long enough without actually running anything, about time I did something useful! This seems to have crept up on us, such that the 2023-24 EFL season starts next Friday (July 4th), so time's ticking to get this up and running! Entries are valid until midday BST on Friday August 4th 2023 via DM or you can post on the thread - but your picks are liable to be stolen! That gives you just over a week! Rules are pretty straightforward: Submit a team of 20 names. (Plus subs, but with only a week to go until the game starts, one or two subs max should be all that's needed). The first person to have all 20 names they chose leave their club (this can be due to resignation, termination, mutual termination, changing club or any other form of sacking) wins. It's as simple as that. Valid Leagues are any 2023-24 members of: English Premier League English Championship English League One English League Two English National League English National League North English National League South Scottish Premiership Scottish Championship Scottish League One Scottish League Two Welsh Premier League Welsh Cymru Alliance League Northern Irish Football League Premiership Northern Irish Football League Championship (I'll be reliant on your notifying me if your picks have gone in some of the more obscure leagues, mind you!) The last round saw 5 entrants, but it would be great if we could get a few more of you involved - I know there are plenty of football fans on here and the fruit is ripe for the picking (14 sackings across 11 Premier League clubs during last season, more since the season ended, and only 32 of the 92 league managers have been in charge longer than last summer!) so feel free to get involved. The more the merrier, it's just a bit of fun and gives us something to talk about between deaths. Good luck!

I can't tell you how much I would love for Labour to be in power and the Lib Dems to be the Opposition. Suella Braverman sat on the backbenches twiddling her thumbs waiting for her two questions as leader of the third party with 50 seats. But realistically, it'll end up being Labour and Tories as normal, with all those flirting with Reform falling into line to limit the damage.

I'll be honest, I've been there. When I studied politics 20 years ago, the argument in favour of FPTP was that it provided strong and stable governments. Having seen eras of Thatcher then Blair, I could see the sense in that. You may not agree with everything they do, but at least they are able to do it without gridlock or division. 2010 was a once in a generation event, a coalition government, never to be repeated (probably likely to collapse in a year or two and lead to a new majority government). In the AV referendum, I held my nose and backed Cameron in voting No, not because I was dead set against PR, but that AV wasn't really meaningful PR (I think I was in favour of Single Transferable Vote, probably still am). The last 14 years have been a car crash, when you look at the number of votes each party has got and the number of seats that's equated to, the weak and divided governments it has ushered in and the cast of undesirables that have risen to the top. I think (hope) Labour would like to be more radical, but their only hope of winning under FPTP (at least in their eyes - and tried and trusted logic would seem to bear this out) is convincing a narrow swathe of the electorate to switch from Tory to Labour, flipping seats up and down the country from blue to red. That means being fiscally restrained, socially cautious and politically uncontroversial. We keep hearing that there is a liberal majority in elections but we always seem to lean to a centre right government. With Single Transferable Vote, you could back every liberal party and still know your vote will count. This would potentially lead to a broad liberal coalition made up of Greens, Lib Dems and Labour who could be far more radical in their policies and thinking and find consensus on key issues. With the Tories the only major party on the right (although this may be changing), liberal-leaning voters are forced to pick whichever party is best placed to win, rather than the one that best aligns with their beliefs. I'm in a safe Labour seat, if there is a Green on the ballot (and there probably won't be), I could be tempted to vote for them, knowing it probably wouldn't matter here, but do I really want to take that risk? No, of course not. With STV, I could vote Green, then vote Labour (maybe even with Lib Dem in between) and still know I'm contributing to defeating the Tories whatever the outcome. The problem you've got is the only party that can bring the change in is usually the one that's just done very well under the existing system... What I do know is that I would much rather have Labour in power than the Tories, whatever their shade of purple. The Blair years saw so much good happen in this country, even if he wasn't as radical as some of the Labour left would have liked him to be. I'm hoping once given a stonking majority, Starmer and Reeves will be able to be bold, although the state the Tories are leaving the country's finances in, I'm not sure they'll be able to, whatever their ideals.

Saw this story earlier. Susan Hall has denied all knowledge of this video and has not watched it. Who made it? Tory Head Office. Brilliant. Oh, and this is the second version I believe, the first showed people running on the underground - except it was Penn Station in New York and not the London Underground.

Have they learned absolutely fucking nothing? He'll be the next one to jump ship! As one of the weekend papers noted, it's very hard for the Tories to claim 30p Lee is a nobody when he was Deputy Leader of their party less than 2 months ago. Same will now apply to Gullis. There is a genuine possibility that the Tories could be terminally wounded by the nonsense of these past 2 years. There's only so much that can be absorbed before the public say "enough". And it's been a century since the last re-alignment in British politics. I'm not sure Reform carrying the conservative torch forward is a positive step, though.

  18. Is this a Yank sport? Well, it's a sporting event that takes place in Tennessee, so this seems as good a place as any to mention this... I don't know if this is the right forum for such discussions, but is anybody familiar with, or been following, the Barkley Marathons? How do I sum this up? It's a race set up in the 80s consisting of 5 repeated loops totalling 100 miles completed in 60 hours in unforgiving terrain, featuring elevation of more than twice the height of Everest. It was inspired by a daring attempted prison escape by James Earl Ray, assassin of Martin Luther King. It is known as "the race that eats its young" and there are often no finishers. If you complete 3 loops in 40 hours, you are credited with a "fun run". If you complete 3 loops in more than 40 hours or 5 loops in more than 60 hours, you are classified as DNF. There is no course map per se, only a description, loops are completed either clockwise or anti-clockwise, with each decided by the organiser and the final loop is always completed alternately clockwise and anticlockwise, with the first starter getting the choice of direction (the reason for setting them off in opposite directions is to try to prevent teaming up to complete the last lap and make it a little competitive). Competitors have been known to get wildly lost, sleep in puddles and hallucinate a whole variety of things in their sleep deprived states. In the 36 years it has been operating, there had only been 17 finishers, some of those completed by the same people. One cannot "enter" in a conventional sense, you need to write a letter saying why you should be given entry and there is no entry fee (previous finishers get automatic entry) and the field is limited to 35-40 per year, half of whom usually drop out within the first 2 loops. There was a Netflix documentary about it around a decade ago, which some of you may have seen. Coverage generally is only provided through sporadic updates on Twitter. Anyway, the 2024 Barkley Marathons started on Thursday morning at 5.17am local time and concluded at 5.17pm this evening (9.17pm UK time). Conditions have been favourable, and an incredible 7 people started the final loop, among them a 2-time finisher and a 3-time finisher, 2 debutants, 2 previous competitors and a British woman called Jasmin Paris, who became the first woman ever to attempt a 5th loop, having last year completed 4 loops but outside the time limit to continue. First finisher was a Ukrainian debutant in 58 hours, 44 minutes and 59 seconds. Second was now a 3-time finisher in 59:15:38. A repeat attempter ended up lost and didn't finish. The 3-time finisher became a 4-time finisher, a new record, in 59:30:32. Another previous attempter completed for the first time in 59:38:42, before the other debutant "tapped out", leaving Jasmin and a sizable chunk of people on Twitter waiting with baited breath to see whether she would become the first woman to complete the Barkley. As 9.17pm approached, it got very tense. Then, just as the clock ticked past 9.17pm, the update came: Jasmin Paris finished loop five in 59:58:21 - or to put it another way, she completed a 100-mile, 60-hour race with 99 seconds to spare. I promise you, it was thrilling. And I wanted to tell you about it. And see if any of you have also been following the chaos. *Please note, I am in no way an ultra runner myself. I'm a committed parkrunner, but have never run further than a 10K, but the Barkley is an astonishing feat of human endeavour. **If there's a more appropriate thread for this, do let me know.

A reminder that this ISN'T related to the surgery. It was found during/subsequent to the surgery. Her wish to keep whatever medical procedure she has had done private for now at least is entirely her choice. It's a shame people have nothing better to do than wildly speculate like they have. The cancer diagnosis in some ways distracts from the original surgery (if the hysterectomy theory is correct, then ovarian would be most likely).
