    Seen Any Good Films Lately?

After a two month absence (unheard of outside of Covid times recently - life got in the way), I've been to the cinema 3 times in the past fortnight for 3 quite different films: Wonka - as Biblio said, it was a pleasant, family friendly couple of hours. Put a smile on your face and Chalamet was charming. There was just enough mystique about him that you could imagine him becoming more jaded in later years and turning into Gene Wilder. Just about. Ferrari - biopic of Enzo, the founder of the Ferrari marque. Interesting film, certainly not a reverent puff piece (the film starts with him waking up in bed with his mistress!) but it was a strange film, lacking in direction and plot. It didn't tell his life story, had a few different stories it was sort of telling and didn't really conclude its main arc beyond the fact we know the Ferrari brand survived. The final act was very brief, and I was surprised it was finished when it was, it felt like it needed another half an hour. Adam Driver pretty good in the title role and the racing scenes were well done (including a particularly graphic crash). It was nice to see representations of names that I've only really read about in books before (Gendebien, Peter Collins, Piero Taruffi, de Portago). But not the greatest movie I've ever seen. One Life - biopic of Nicholas Winton, mainly set in the 1930s, but as a flashback to the That's Life appearances of the 1980s. Johnny Flynn really good as the young Nicky, Helena Bonham Carter a scene stealer as his mother and an extraordinary story, which I have to say I only knew in passing. What they achieved was incredible and the impact he made was significant, but it was nice that the film acknowledged the others involved - Trevor and Doreen (I think Hanna the Czech liaison was a fictionalised composite?). Definitely shed a couple of tears, it was powerful stuff. I won't be watching Saltburn, nor Poor Things. The Holdovers is next week's offering I think.

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

So...what do we think is going to happen in the Traitors finale tonight? I predicted yesterday's actions, it made too much sense to kill Zack and pin it on Jasmine. Harry, Andrew, Evie, Mollie and Jaz. First to go will be Andrew - Mollie is gunning for him, Harry will turn on him and they just need to flip one of Evie and Jaz, who are both suspicious of Ross's outrage the other day. I just can't see that Andrew will get Evie and Jaz to act on their Harry suspicions before they get rid of him. Depending on what Andrew does (and I'm not sure whether I can see him throwing Harry under the bus the way Kieran did to Wilf last year), it could follow a similar pattern to last year. Jaz will want another banishment I think (he's put enough pieces together on Harry) but I don't know whether Evie will agree (2-2 was enough last year to get another vote). Mollie could agree but with the intention of throwing Jaz overboard, as he's raised suspicion too. But why would he try and instigate another vote if he was a traitor? If Jaz and/or Evie can sow enough doubt on Harry, Mollie could flip and save the day. So many possible twists and turns. I think Harry could win the lot, but I think a lot will depend on what Andrew says when banished and what Jaz can convince the others to do (surely he's got to act on his suspicions?!). Looking forward to it anyway.

All that's missing from this spat is Claudia Winkleman in some natty knitwear and a dark, sombre rendition of an 80s classic. "I don't think Simon is the traitor, I think it's you, Liam, and you're thinking you'll play the long game and turn on Rishi eventually anyway. That's just my opinion though, but I've never been wrong before... "

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

I think Harry's "psychic abilities" are going to come back to bite him. Up to now I've assumed he'd walk away with the money but Jaz is onto him and the others are starting to wonder. I mean... if he's so good at spotting traitors, why on earth would they keep him alive? Unless... It's exactly the issue Paul had after the dungeon. But if it plays out as Harry thinks and they banish Jasmine, then kill whoever they like and it's 3 v 3, the Faithful haven't got a hope in hell of winning the money as far as I can see. It's just which Traitors make it to the final few. So pleased that Season 2 has at least lived up to Season 1's high standards, even if it hasn't quite surpassed it in my eyes.

Traitors have played a blinder this series. So glad "he" got his comeuppance though, he was too smarmy by half. They kill or banish Jaz and they won't catch them. The two faithful girls are useless and Zack is too weird to survive. Ross has been utterly useless as a faithful, he could end up winning the lot now.

There were more in the documentary that just premiered I believe? But I don't know when that was filmed...

    Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

15 days into 2024 and we have our first hit of the year (as far as I'm aware!). Swindon have dispensed with the services of Michael Flynn, having given him a long-term contract in November (naturally), having won 3 of their past 15 matches (although they are just below mid-table in League Two). https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67981867 This gives a hit to two players in this game, and it's a big moment at both ends of the board! First, @BuffaloPhilgets a 5th hit to reach 25% completion and, more importantly, move level with Commtech Sio Bibble at the foot of the table. But at the top of the table, @Great Uncle Bulgaria steals a march on 4 other players, including long-term leader Sly Ronnie, to become the first player to reach halfway with 10 hits! But never fear, there is hope for the rest of us as, for him to win, de Zerbi needs to leave Brighton, Saint Ange needs to leave Spurs and he has the managers of the teams currently 3rd and 4th in the Championship! But who knows in this game! Anything's possible... Scoreboard Great Uncle Bulgaria - 10 Sly Ronnie, Wannamaker, Lady Fiona, Rover and Out - 9 Bibliogryphon, Diego - 7 MariNisia, Maryportfuncity - 6 Commtech Sio Bibble, Buffalo Phil - 5

    Doctor Who

This is exceptionally well done and should give a good few of you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. It was thrilling to me, and I'm nowhere near as familiar with her as some of you lot (I really need to watch more Classic Who, especially now it's on iPlayer!)

    49. Franz Beckenbauer

I guess this means that in 13 months, we've lost the talisman of the 1966, 1970 and 1974 world cup winning sides - Bobby Charlton, Pele and Franz Beckenbauer. 1962 and 1958 too if you include Pele for those too. End of an era in many ways, given we've already lost some of the other stars of that era - Muller, Cruyff and Eusebio.

    49. Franz Beckenbauer

Surprised this has happened this early in the year, he definitely felt like a decent bet to go at some point in 2024, but it didn't necessarily feel a given that he'd go this year. A very impressive start by the Deathlist, 3 in just over a week. Perhaps this year is the one where they've finally entertained all the collective wisdom on this site and decided to strike. Rest in Peace, Der Kaiser.

    Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

Well, I've been looking at the recent ins and outs to see if anything has moved and I had to search high and low to find anything! None of the recent EFL changes have affected this game, but at the end of December, Blyth Spartans parted ways with Graham Fenton in the National League North. https://www.northumberlandgazette.co.uk/sport/football/graham-fenton-sacked-as-manager-of-blyth-spartans-and-replacement-appointed-4460421 This gave @maryportfuncity another hit and moved him into a share of bronze position, with 6 hits. Updated Scoreboard Sly Ronnie, Wannamaker, Lady Fiona, Rover and Out, Great Uncle Bulgaria - 9 Bibliogryphon, Diego - 7 MariNisia, Maryportfuncity - 6 Commtech Sio Bibble - 5 Buffalo Phil - 4 In other news today, Tony Mowbray has taken over as the new boss of Birmingham, replacing Wayne Rooney. Safe pair of hands, but not very exciting. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67899139

Stey owt of th' black n into the red, there's nothin' in this game for too in a bed! It's a Phoenix Nights love-in is Bullseye! Jim Bowen appeared as a club owner in Blackpool in Phoenix Nights and Dave Spikey led the previous revival on Dave.

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

Caught up with the first 3 episodes of The Traitors S2 the past couple of days and I was as worried as everybody else as S1 was amazing. Wasn't sure about the choices for traitors in episode 1 but by the end of episode 3 I'm on board and a couple of them are playing stellar games. Love the psychological dynamics of people trying to be clever to deduce the solution and ending up all barking up entirely the wrong tree like sheep. It's managed to captivate me as much as S1 but whether it will end up being as epic will depend very much on how things develop.

    Scavenger Hunt Bingo Deadpool V

I've won it twice and have no idea if I should take precedence or not. But I remember an earlier game where MSC fulfilled all the criteria to win but did not have ownership over any of his potential outs due to other players' performances, so I'm not going to complain until Biblio rules otherwise.

    Scavenger Hunt Bingo Deadpool V

The Scavenger Hunt delivers again! An out is an out, and there are worse names to have as your single out than a 91-year-old legendary composer (even if he has reneged on his retirement suggesting he's in decent health! ).

    The DL Prediction Game 2024

Congratulations @wannamaker, a superb performance given the high number of new entries! A predictably average performance from me, I could have scored so many more if I'd known they were going to listen to people for a change! Excellent performance from you too @Great Uncle Bulgaria!

    Thoughts On The 2024 List

So, running with your suggestion, what likelihood do you think a) Tim goes first and b) Tim goes soon? Seems to be generally in good health (unless I've missed something) and still taking on primary care for Prunella, but surely that stress has got to take a toll eventually too?

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

Does the host in the States (whoever it is now it's not Trebek) add contextual information to answers? It feels like it would, but I'm not sure how it fits into the shorter timespan. Stephen Fry spends a minute here and there giving us more info about an answer. But it's definitely a little more cerebral than most afternoon gameshows ITV trot out. How many boards do they play in the US? 2 and the final question I'm guessing?

So .. What Do You Watch On TV?

That explains so much! It will die a death here. I've watched both episodes as the bits I've seen of the US version and spoofs look interesting. It's a nice concept but very samey samey - 3 rounds of 30 questions for increasing amounts of money. When did it become a requirement for gameshows to last an hour? On Challenge, the old ones from the 90s are all half an hour (Catchphrase, Wheel of Fortune, Family Fortunes - my dad watches them a lot ) including adverts. Well, Catchphrase and FF have both returned with hour-long versions and Wheel of Fortune is getting a reboot with Graham Norton on Saturday nights which will doubtless be an hour. They've brought back Deal or No Deal for an hour - wasn't that a 45-minuter including adverts on Channel 4 previously? Who decided more is better? It so rarely is! Or is it just cheaper to make an hour of Catchphrase than 2 half hours of something else? Yes, that's probably it.

    Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

I've no love for Rooney and what happened to Eustace was a disgrace but this is the most ridiculous time to sack him. He came in October and is sacked 2 days into January - how's he meant to implement his ideas when he's not even been given a transfer window to bring in some of his own signings? Now they'll spend a fortnight picking a new manager who will then need to assess the squad and make some panic buys. Or they could try getting Eustace back. That could be interesting...

    The DL Prediction Game 2024

Think I count 16 on my list that aren't on the official list, which is actually lower than last year's errors! But the order shifted a lot more than last year, so I'm not getting many 10 point bonuses. Guess we'll see.

    Queen Margrethe II of Denmark

Yeah, I had to check Beatrix's title for the precedent. Personally, there are a few options I think. I assumed Dowager Queen would be an option but that would require her to be a widow I suppose. They could follow Papal precedent and title her Queen Emeritus (but does that suggest appointment or election?). Or simply clunkily label her Former Queen. But I agree, I don't think it would overly confuse people to have Queen Magrethe, King Frederick and Queen Mary all at the same time.
