He also won the Argentine title with Newell's Old Boys in 1988, he was succeeded in this post by Marcelo Bielsa in 1990. As a player, he won four caps for Argentina - scoring one goal and also scored 20 goals in 65 games for Boca Juniors between 1959 and 1961.

Antonio de la Torre Villalpando, who was in the Mexico squad for the 1978 WC in Argentina is dead aged 69. 44 caps and one goal for the defender, who played for El Tri between 1972 and 1978.

Jergé Hoefdraad, a winger whose career was spent moving around smaller to medium-sized Dutch clubs, but always returning to Almere City, was shot and killed yesterday. The 35-year-old spent his youth career at FC Abcoude then the giants AFC Ajax, before moving to RKC Waalwijk, where he made his professional debut. After leaving Waalwijk, he joined Almere City, whom he would play for 153 times across three spells from 2009-2011, 2013-15 and lastly from 2017-2019. Perhaps his best stint as a player, however, was at Cambuur Leeuwarden, whom he played for between his second and third spells at Almere - scoring six goals and assisting 21 in 51 matches. His other club in his playing career was a two-year stint at SC Telstar between 2011 and 2013.

Marcelo Campo, who made 29 appearances for Argentina between 1978 and 1987 and was also in their squad for the inaugural Rugby World Cup that same year dead of a heart attack aged 63. Scored a very famous try for the Pumas against England at Twickenham in 1978.

Marcos Ferrufino, who picked up nine caps for Bolivia and was in two Copa America squads of 1989 and 1991 has succumbed to COVID aged 58.

He won six Peruvian titles, four with Universitario (1967, 1969, 1971 and 1974) and two with Cristal (1979 and 1980) But perhaps his greatest honour at club level was winning the 1975 Copa Libertadores with Independiente, a squad that featured the not-too-long departed Agustin Balbuena.

Luis del Sol, inside-right for Real Madrid in the legendary 1960 European Cup final at Hampden Park, has died aged 86. He was prolific in his time at Real Madrid, scoring 22 times in 55 games between 1960 and 1962. But he was best known for his spells at Real Betis between 1953 and 1959, where he scored 38 goals in 152 games and latterly, Juventus, whom he joined from Real in 1962. He made 220 appearances for Juve, scoring 20 times in an eight-year career with them that saw him win Serie A and the Coppa Italia once each. After leaving Juve for Roma, he also won the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1972. Internationally, he won 16 caps for Spain, scoring three times and was part of not only the 1962 and 1966 Spanish squads at the World Cup but also the squad that won the European Championship in between in 1964.

Giampiero Boniperti, the last survivor from Italy's 1950 World Cup squad, dead at 92 from heart failure He was the captain of the Azzurri in 1954, from that squad only Carlo Galli (90) and Gino Pivatelli (88) survive.
