    Who are the immortals?

Your jinxing attempt hasn't worked yet but Tep Vong is now in ICU on a feeding tube and looks much, much more dying than two days ago.

    The Ones That Got Away...

Nena Kafka, Polish-born Finnish holocaust survivor (Bergen-Belsen) dead at 96. There were already only three in 2005 and Mayer Franck died in 2012, I am quite sure this leaves Lilly Millner the last holocaust survivor in Finland. Shuzo Teruka, Hiroshima survivor died some weeks ago at 99.

    Who are the immortals?

Impressive Zagallo made it this far with his heart and kidney issues, his health already mentioned in the Time Added first post from 2007. The most "How're they still alive" footy names I can think of are now probably Bilardo, César Luis Menotti and Nelson Acosta. My post in the Cleric thread from yesterday mentioning that Tep Vong is "back doing his duties" has aged quite badly as he's been hospitalised today. Seems that being on IV at home is a bad sign with these very old and ill people like we already saw with KH Ali Yafie last year. Edit: Apparently Guy Warren has also survived a quadruple bypass and prostate cancer, and Red Farmer was expected dead within a week in December 2009. Tough people

    Hospitalised!

La Gata Enilce Lopez, paramilitary leader, drug trafficker and my DL Cup pick last year, hospitalised in "serious condition". Probably just another attempt to get out of house arrest.

    From Cleric To Relic

Bad news for those who picked him in Deathrace, Tep Vong is back doing his great supreme patriarch duties but otherwise looks like he died years ago. Image from today.

    42. Raul Castro

Not dead, unfortunately Made a rare appearance and spoke at the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution earlier this week. The two other most powerful old guard Cuban leaders José Ramón Machado Ventura (93) and Ramiro Valdés Menéndez (91) were there too.

    Political Frailty

Juan Alemann, Minister of Finance of Argentina 1976-1981 during Jorge Videla's presidency, dead at 96. Accused of murders, dissapearances, baby kidnappings and tortures (he's known to have visited Videla's torture centers and two survivors claimed he would personally oversee torture) but never convicted. Also, Hector Sandler died last week.

    The 100 Club

Republic of China socialite Yan Renmei (zh wiki) apparently already died in 2014, but it never stopped Sohu and other Chinese news sources saying she's "still in good health at 108". Edit: As Nastase is dead too, just Shitu and Clayton Flowers left.

    The Happy Birthday Thread

Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, is 91 today. This image above is from his New Year's Speech. Ilia II was born into an influential family in Vladikavkaz, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, now part of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia. He was baptized on the 7th of January (Georgia's Christmas Day) as Irakli Ghudushauri-Shiolashvili after Heraclius II aka. Erekle II who was King of Kakheti in the 18th century. At the age of three he received a blessing from Callistratus who was at the time Georgia's Catholicos-Patriarch. Ilia II graduated Vladikavkaz Secondary School No. 22 in 1952 and joined the Moscow Theological Seminary and later the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1957, at the age of 24 he took vows and became a monk, days later ordained a hierodeacon and in two years a priest. He rose quickly, already a metropolitan bishop at 36, finally becoming the Catholicos-Patriarch at 44 after the death of the controversial and unpopular David V (1903-1977). During his time as the Catholicos-Patriarch the Georgian Orthodox Church has greatly expanded, from 15 dioceses to around 47. He has met two Popes, both in his home country, John Paul II in 1999 and Francis in 2016. Ilia II has long been suffering from a chronic heart condition and advanced Parkinson's that have limited his appearances during the last 15 years.

    Military commanders

Gordon R. Sullivan, Chief of Staff of the US Army 1991-1995, dead at 86. (For DL search purposes Gordon Sullivan or Gordon Russell Sullivan) Two of his predecessors are still alive, John A. Wickham Jr (96 this year) and Carl E. Vuono (90 this year). Vuono was still attending events as of 2019 and probably later, not so sure about Wickham who already looked very frail in 2010.

    Deathrace 2024

A two-hour prayer session for Jayapataka Swami's health was held today and he seems to be a pick here. Might be a sign he's very near the end but the guy seems to have more lives than a container ship full of cats.

    The 100 Club

Teuvo Ruohonen, Finnish cop who founded the Police Rapid Response Unit "Bear Squad" and was responsible for the safety of the CSCE in 1975 when the Helsinki Accords were signed, dead at 101. Participants included Gerald Ford, Brezhnev, Harold Wilson, Aldo Moro, Ceausescu, Tito, Kissinger, Kurt Waldheim and others. Interesting obituary, he shot down a Soviet fighter during WWII and "interrogated" Miss Universe Armi Kuusela in 1952 when she crashed her sunbeam with a bus. I thought of putting him on my Centenarians team but I considered he might die without much fanfare (turns out he already died in early December, two days after Kissinger).

    Thoughts On The 2024 List

Here's some info on Blix's health. While he's still giving interviews regularly he got TBE (tick-borne encephalitis) in 2021 and spent two months in ICU/hospital with complications and has had balance issues since.

    Who are the immortals?

Great list with the 2023 miracle hospitalisation survivors, recoverers and deserved DL, Crowdsourced names (Willie, Le Pen and David Graham). I was suprised seeing Guy Warren's name there because I thought he'd have died already! Has there been any info on Surat Singh Khalsa since his May hospitalisation? Also, here's the birthday schedule for the next two months. Mostly or actually fully people who logically should've died 2-10 years ago: 4 January - David Musuguri, 104, Cleopa Msuya, 93, Ilia II of Georgia, 91 12 January - Tep Vong, 92 14 January - Ma Shitu, 109 2 February - Dries Van Agt, 93 4 February - Kim Yong-nam, 96 8 February - Khamtai Siphandone, 100 14 February - Juan Ponce Enrile, 100 25 February - Nasser Makarem Shirazi, 97 27 February - Joanne Woodward, 94

    Hospitalised!

Silvia Pinal out of ICU and improving. It was of course more serious than originally told (apparently aspiration pneumonia judging from different articles) and she was "very badly" when she was hospitalised on the 21st and visited by a priest (last rites, maybe?) on the 27th. Still undergoing respiratory treatment and on antibiotics due to bronchoaspiration, but they want her to be discharged before 2024.
