Was he nice to be around? Always wondered how he was as a person because people in Mass. seemed to be somewhat divided on him when I lived there.

Yes, he's helpful to people; you could frequently see him pick up trash on his walk from Brookline to Northeastern, and he'd stop and talk to anyone. Seems to always find some common thread to talk to people about.

He actually uses the rail service that he advocated for.

Has a good sense of humor; pictures of the tank and Jon Lovitz's portrayal of him in one of his offices.

He retired from his post at Northeastern this week. Only really of note because it could be time to start using Kitty on your lists:

I mentioned the two of them back in November:

I used to work with him; he sounds like his usual self. Last time I saw him in person was 2018. His wife always seemed to be in worse health than him; she's still getting electroshock treatment as far as I know. They had a routine of always having dinner together every night at 6pm, not disrupted except on the 1988 campaign trail. Such a very attached couple.

Well, given that there are usually five nominations for each award, 3 out of 10 seems a pretty healthy return to me.

The award for Best British Group wasn't given to women for 41 years until Little Mix won in 2021. I think the issue is not entirely about Little Mix, but more of an industry-wide problem of not recognizing women.

  12. There was a photo of George Burns smoking a cigar in my elementary school library in the 90s; so that dude was iconic to me as a child due to the bizarreness of it. Like why would this compel a 9 year old in 1994 to read?

I think in general people know Kirk Douglas by name and face -- or even just "Michael Douglas's dad", but not Eva Marie Saint or Glynis Johns. A lot of people said "who?" regarding the latter but knew instantly when I said the mom in Mary Poppins. I assume same situation with Gloria Stuart.

Donald Trump supporter (woman) on the 6 O'Clock news saying if he's put in jail, millions of people will grab their guns and we'll have a civil war. Genuinely got to the stage where I said out loud "go right ahead love, we'll kill every fucking one of you". Sick to the back teeth of his bullshit and how people will work against their own self interests to enable him. It's a total messiah complex and it's not just dangerous it's insane.  (Oh, and no, I'm not American, so I can't take part in a civil war, but would it really remain civil in that situation?)

The news needs to stop highlighting these people's call to arms. Just let them die in the fringe.

He really didn't have that many protestors as anticipated with the mug shot in Atlanta or his other trials.

I don't have the sufficient provenance to argue with your account of the music industry in the US. What I did notice, however, was the overwhelming presence of the actions of her team and of the industry in general, which make your attacks on her personally appear nearly as unjust as the press who could quite easily have driven her to her death with their incessant capricious (and often misogynistic) attacks on her. Oppressive strategy in the music industry isn't exactly exclusive to Britney's team, as I'm sure you'll accept.

In any case, BuffaloPhil said it; this is not a game based on whether you like someone or not; we're here to judge the music itself. Morrissey is an iron clad cunt but you won't see me downvoting any Smiths numbers as a result of that.

I don't like her music. It lacks artistry and sounds robotic to me. I've said that several times? But I don't have an issue with people liking her music though; that's subjective and is expressed via voting.

    Spoiler

I think the paparazzi could have driven her to her death, which is why I agreed with the actions of her parents to file a restraining order against their lead wrangler, Sam Lufti. But she does speak fondly of Adnan in her book so no, I don't agree with the fan narrative that she wasn't in bed with the paparazzi. I don't think the fan narrative helps her -- they have effectively isolated her from getting any medical treatment and only being around that manager, Cade, who was accused of sex trafficking years ago. In the fall, she was speeding down the wrong side of the road again; she's going to be enabled into an Anne Heche fate. And the man she is purportedly seeing is a meth dealer. Over the summer, both she and Cade tried to file false charges of assault against that new NBA player, Wembanyama, and his security. Effectively trying to end a young black man's career before it started as a way to drum up attention for her. This is nasty. I think the fans need to be more honest that what is going on with her is serious and probably genetic (her paternal grandmother committed suicide), and a lot of it, such as her relationship with the paparazzi, have been dangerous decisions she made.

Surprised to see a female from the music industry parrot the press attacks on a female from the music industry.

What do you mean, then, by her being an industry plant?

    Spoiler

There's this insistence that all women have to support all women's actions, in an effort to try to shut down discussion, and I don't subscribe to that.

And actually neither does Britney and her team. Britney's marketing was to push her to the exclusion of all other female artists. She is still constantly trying to engage in stan wars. In 2022, Aguilera released an album with lyrics about overcoming abuse from her father, and Britney posted an instagram of herself doing a nude chair dance while wishing Aguilera's father happy birthday. That's vile. That marketing strategy is such a turnoff to me; I do find it pretty ironic that I cannot criticize Britney but her team attacks other women consistently for decades.

I'll do an overview what I saw in the music industry, and how Britney fit into that:

    Spoiler

In the 90s, there was an abundance of female artists on the radio of all types, and the industry squeezed it down -- on country radio for instance, there's a rule to no longer play female artists back to back. The 1996 Telecommunications Act led to an era of aggressive mergers of the record labels. The people taking over the record labels were not creative types: they valued money above all else. Their goal wasn't artistry but rather what had the most mass appeal, and they wanted the ability to control the artists especially after the too-opinionated grunge and early hip hop era. Prince's name-change was due to trying to get out of a very controlling contract; it's why he wrote "slave" on his face. You'll notice that a lot of bands broke up in this era, citing they were broke; that was all a result of the business dealings of the era. The industry was changing sharply to one more manufactured. I've downvoted nearly all of the manufactured groups in this game; some is fine but most is overwhelmingly payola and sounds basic as a result and I didn't like it replacing all other music at the time. I still upvote other pop music. I don't have a specific distaste for liking things with mass appeal, but I do when it comes to exclusion of other talent.

This is where I would say Britney comes in: she was very malleable by older men. Her mom would just leave her alone with them in Sweden or New York. She entered the industry on a more Judy Garland trajectory as a result. I do feel bad for Britney on this.

Other women at the time were less malleable. Fiona Apple was mocked when she called out the industry. Women who were actually strong and opinionated started complaining how the industry was trying to force them to be more like Britney, telling them to record in the studio like her; this is all apparent in songs and interviews at the time. The labels started putting out negative stories about how difficult these women were in the studio, when I think they were all just trying to be artists, play their music. Cyndi Lauper is one who mentions the Britney effect on taking away artistry in the studio.

There's the other thing that was going on in the music industry with the conservatives trying to take over. Back in the 60s/70s, you had artists speaking out against the Vietnam War. Equivalent pop stars to Britney like Cher. Britney pretty much seemed spoonfed to come out in favor of the invasion of Iraq, because you're not supposed to question the President. Artists like the Dixie Chicks though were getting deplatformed when they spoke out on the war. This conservative control of the media continues to this day, as I pointed out earlier, the Billboard charts no longer have data from indie record stores, only places like Walmart. It's to manipulate the charts politically and socially. Janet Jackson getting industry blackballed post-Superbowl was part of CBS's Les Moonves's campaign to chill speech. While Britney doesn't have to do with all of these incidents, I am pointing it out as an example that it is not daft to notice that there were punishments for those who didn't fall in line with the industry.

Also, there are several Britney songs that she does not sing on. Myah Marie is Britney's singer. I believe the track released recently with Will.I.Am is just an old Myah Marie one. And the song she did with Elton recently was just taken from previous vocals she recorded (as she records with each syllable) -- he mentioned she never went into the studio. She has indicated that she hasn't done anything music-wise since 2018. I see Britney's leading the way to not needing the human anymore to create the music; you can just AI it.

Can't help but think Britney's being done up here because she's Britney. To some, that's a good thing, to many others, not.

Piece Of Me is one of my favourites of hers. A catchy EDM middle finger to the sensationalist press who hounded her to the brink of oblivion.

Yet at the time of the song, she was inviting the paparazzi over to her house to have sex with her and do drugs. There's video of her inviting them over. She was purposefully trying to get pregnant by one of them, Adnan Ghalib, as a way to replace her two children; he was married with children too ofcourse -- that's her type. There's photos of them buying a pregnancy test together at Rite Aid. If you really wanted to do a middle finger to the paparazzi, you wouldn't just move them in with you.

No, I don't like her. She was a music industry plant in order to keep other female music artists in line (ie, those who play at Lilith Fair, riotgrrl, female hiphop). Everything about her is fake, and unfortunately influential. She sounded like AI on that Blackout album. Many female artists have complained that the standards now in the studio is to just sing syllables like her so it can be copy/pasted together, rather than just performing music.

It's actually disturbing how little the U.S government seems to care about their military getting exposed to toxic substances (Agent Orange, radioactive materials, asbestos, burn pits etc.). I know a U.S Iraq war veteran that was exposed to burn pits. Now in his early 50s, survived skin cancer and has COPD and liver disease. He has a twin brother and 2 siblings who are perfectly healthy. He's been trying to fight for 100% disability but the V.A has been giving him a hard time as you might guess.

I was one of the babies at Camp Lejeune; Tuberville and Cruz were trying to get us removed from the Pact Act saying we were looking for free handouts. Also said prostate cancer shouldn't be covered in it when it's been known to be caused by Agent Orange. I was glad that Biden held his ground on wanting to sign it with us all included, but I don't know really the effects of the Pact Act yet.
