On his afternoon show Wright was always banging on about his latest diet - how he'd quit carbs, given up drinking etc etc - doesn't seem to have done him much good, or perhaps he got back into bad habits after his show was cancelled ... anyway, I thought this was a nice moment - from the end of Vernon Kay's show the other day

To say to other NATO members that America won't come to your aid if you're attacked and haven't paid your 'subs' is one thing. To say that he would encourage Russia to attack and invade those who haven't is utterly deranged. I actually hope he gets in in November and then does a William H Harrison a month later. Whoever comes after can't be any worse.

There's been nothing else on BBC News for the last hour. Anyone would think the man was on his deathbed.
All the same, I like him, and I know many people live for years with cancer (of all types). No reason why he shouldn't have a few more years yet.

Statement says he's stepping back from duties. He really should just abdicate and allow William to take over.Abdication is not something that can just be done on a whim. It's a huge process that involves Parliament and all the Commonwealth territories.
I'm sure that William, with three young children, isn't exactly desperate to be King. If the King becomes very ill there may be a regency, but that'll be it.

Better known for his work with Boney M, I would say. As well as producing their records he also provided the male vocal parts mimed by Bobby Farrell on stage.

Even two years ago they were describing him as 'ancient' - a bit rude though.
And what a great tag-line - I was expecting something along the 'Up Yours' line but that was way better. I extend my heartfelt contrafibularities to the writer.

I gather she has been diagnosed with ME, which can't be good at any age, let alone someone in their eighties. Still, there seems to me to be a difference between 'keeping a low profile' and missing the two biggest RF events of the last ten years, while letting her husband go alone. Was she seen at the Platinum jubilee?

Duchess of Kent before the Duke, surely? Fifteen months ago she was too ill to attend the Queen's funeral, and she didn't make the Coronation either. The Duke has been quite active in comparison.

I never knew his name had an accent under the 'e' - I've just been trying to wipe something off my keyboard.

How about Dabney ("9 to 5") Coleman? Just passes the fame test I reckon, and turns 92 in January.
And if you buggers don't pick Roger Corman and Neil Harvey next year, you never will.

Boht has sailed ...
Thought she went a couple of years ago, for some reason. I wonder who I was thinking of?

Perhaps a brother or sister can do that ... I don't think it's so easy when it's someone you gave birth to. Both of her parents failed to appear at the sentencing, but until then they'd attended every day, at considerable expense - booking a hotel near the court.

Obviously there will be a lot more discussion of Letby in the coming days but I wanted to mention a group of people who are very rarely considered in these cases. Every convicted murderer has a family. Given her young age I assume both her parents are still living, and she may well have a brother, or sister ... of course it's up to them how much contact they want to maintain from now on but I guess it's a parent's instinct never to completely abandon their child, no matter what they've done. If they do decide to cut off all contact I suppose she could be considered an increased suicide risk (although the prisons make that pretty difficult nowadays). It would be interesting to know if Huntley, convicted at a similar age, is still in contact with family members.

Another appaling inmate joins the prison population. Lucy Letby, nurse who killed seven babies. Likely in extreme danger from here on in wherever she is. That said, there's a history of such mentions on this thread, no doubt of the dangers, random attacks - most recently on Ian Watkins - a certainty, but severe injuries don't bring dead pool points and the variables in this tawdry mess make calling the potential deaths a lottery at best. However, for those building stables of talent for future competition, "Here's Lucy...!" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-66180606
Would be amazed if it's not a whole-life sentence tbh. Given that she stood in the witness box for days and told a pack of lies to the jury, there don't seem to be any mitigating circumstances whatsoever.
Perhaps in time they'll give her a cell next to Beverley Allitt so they can discuss where it all went wrong.

Donald Sutherland, Bill Oddie or Ken Livingstone could easily be the next one
You could add to the 'dead' list of Kate's associates the actor Gow Hunter (1960-2011), her co-star in the 'Hounds of Love' video.

Didn't Celine Dion meet her future husband when she was only 12 or 13?

Death certificate shows he died on 10 May. Must have been one of the most-delayed deaths ever reported on this site, especially for one of the 50.
Presumably cremation has taken place by now.

On the website, but nothing at all on the BBC news so far. All seems to be about Madeleine or the Cardiff riots. Very strange.

On a whim, having never heard it, I bought the record of the 1984 West Indies touring squad 'West Indians are back in town' when I saw it in Our Price that year. The B side, 'Skipper Lloyd (Have Mercy)' is credited to 'lead vocal: Thelston Payne.'
Finally, a record of mine that isn't on Youtube. I'm not going to remind myself how it went, though.
Edit: so it is, not the flip, though.

Two hours later, still nothing on Cricinfo or the BBC cricket page!
I only caught him at the end of his playing career but remember him being the match referee in the infamous 'forfeited' Oval Test of 2006. Shame he couldn't have got that game restarted somehow.
