Meh. I really enjoyed the first two books of His Dark Materials, but the third one jumped the shark for me. Haven't read any other PP books. I liked the early Harry Potters, but then they became too bloated and derivative. Didn't like JKR's detective novel. Never read any JW.

Philip Pullman is signing copies of his new book at Blackwell's in Oxford today. I did think of going along but the tickets went too quick. There are some videos of him talking about the book on the BBC site, so that will have to do for form study. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41670890

Booker Prize winning author not Deathlisty? I'd say she is. I've known of her for years, despite not having read any of her books, including the one you mention. Very recently I did read one - The House In Norham Gardens. I read it because it is set in Oxford, and I think we're all drawn to books about places we know. It was really disappointing though - nothing really happens, and apart from a fleeting visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum, there was not much sense of being in Oxford.

Been To Any Good Gigs Lately?
Toast replied to Brinsworth House Baiter's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Just back from seeing The Pretenders. Cracking gig. Chrissie can still belt them out. -
Well done to you both, but I have been a grammar Nazi compelled to fix that pet hate of mine.

RDP doesn't seem to have been updated since 11 September (going by the 'Happy Birthday' section). I can't log in or see my picks. " An unexpected error has occured [sic]. Please try your query again later. " Same for everyone?

Stop it.

I was going to say Mihai, but to be different I shall go for Nobby Stiles.

We won't know 2017 figures for another year - they are usually issued in about September for the previous year, so we will have to wait to see if George Michael's death has any effect. 2012 George 12, Charlotte 20 2013 George 10, Charlotte 21 2014 George 7, Charlotte 23 2015 George 4, Charlotte 25 2016 George 3, Charlotte 12 So George is steadily rising, but both names were in the top 20 before the birth of Prince George.

If it's a boy, they could surprise us with John. That was Diana's father's name. I know people say the Royals think it's unlucky because of Prince John, the Queen's uncle, but all the Royal names have some sort of baggage*. But they are unlikely to pick John because it's deeply unfashionable, and Wills&Kate seem to be tediously conventional in that respect. Same goes for another Royal name, Richard, currently only occupied by the Duke of Gloucester afaik. Arthur and Alfred Alfie are trendy. I can see them choosing Alice for a girl. The other obvious Royal candidates are Victoria and Mary, but again they are unfashionable. *Actually Charlotte could have been dismissed as unlucky, because of Princess Charlotte, only child of George IV. She would have succeeded him as monarch, but she died in childbirth aged 21.

Come on, guys, take this to the appropriate thread. https://forums.deathlist.net/topic/9188-next-years-deathlist-creativity-thread/

Yes but her sister is Philippa and her brother is James. It seems to be very much frowned upon these days to give your children the names of close relatives. Elizabeth is one of Charlotte's names, I can't see them repeating it. I wish they would show a bit of imagination, but I fear we are in for something obvious again.

Posted earlier in the Canadians thread, but not in this one afaik So it's fine.

I really feel that this time they may delve further back into history for royal names. So Cnut if it's a boy and Sexburga for a girl.

Valerie still has a naughty gleam in her eyes. Fenella is 89 and looks rather like my aunt at that age. She lasted another five years or so, and was only felled by a stroke.

DL Status Updates: Statements, Obsevations & Verbal Tennis
Toast replied to Lord Fellatio Nelson's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
After far too many weeks days of the grass being too damp, I managed to get it cut. Not fun, and my elderly lawnmower agreed. Followed by nice hot bath and hairwash, hot sauna face pack, and into bed for a read. Lovely - especially as fresh bedlinen on this morning. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh -

They probably didn't have access to contraceptives either, might as well throw that into the mix. -
