  1. What was that for?

Let me be clear, I don't envy these women their position at all.  I just have no respect for anyone who takes something on in full knowledge of what it entails, and then throws hissy fits about it.

The people I do respect are those who are wise enough to realise that they wouldn't be comfortable or happy in the job, and so graciously decline.  Like Chelsey Davy did.

I find it extraordinary that anybody would take on Harry in full knowledge that certain things will be expected of her, and almost immediately start whimpering about the shit that comes with it.  She knew that she would be at the mercy of the media (social and gutter press).   She knew all the background of Harry's mother and how she exploited the media and then whined when it bit her in the arse.

WHAT THE FUCK DID SHE EXPECT?

You're full of shit.  She wasn't a name in your household.  Certainly not in a single American household beyond mine and Joey's and RadGuy's, for reasons.
I hate when people just say shit.  Pistorious was the only Paralympic (can't believe spellcheck makes me capitalise that) in history.  For reasons.  He made a mark in the real Olympics (rules) and then as a gun advocate lol (too soon for lol?).

She's no more a household name than the 104 year old Aussie professor flew to Switzerland two years ago and provided me a DL Cup hit.  Don't inject what happens on our pages here with the real world.

No, you're full of shit.  Don't presume to tell us Brits whether a British personality is a household name in British households, because you are not in a position to judge. Whether they are known to Americans is irrelevant.

TV news coverage. Was covered in the Scottish news, but not the main UK bulletin.

Oh.  Well, I think we're all agreed that the BBC is crap now, so probably just incompetence.

Unless I missed something, BBC's trumpeting of British success at the Golden Globes omitted Brian Cox's win for Succession.

Maybe they've accepted the case for indyyrefnow, ha!

I think you did miss something, because I read it on there late last night.

(Actually that might have been the win for Succession itself, but I looked at the updated article again this morning, and I know he won so it must have been there?)

So his claim to fame is an unusual stage name rather than his music. Ah well, look forward to his equally 'famous' but memorably monikered bandmates PinkFloyd Cornflakes and Deuteronomy Shreddies appearing on the list in future years then :-)

No, I was talking about the band name, Throbbing Gristle.

I don't actually care if candidates "deserve" fame.  I just go by whether other people have heard of them (or in the case of band musicians, their band).  Everyone has different interests and areas of expertise, so my personal yardstick is "would there be anyone in my local on a Friday evening who has heard of [insert celeb]?"   In this particular case, there certainly would be someone who has heard of Throbbing Gristle.  Probably several people, as it is a memorable name to say the least.

Yes, but a significant percentage of the adult population  (at least those aged between say 35 and 65) has heard of Pulp, unlike throbbing gristle, who I cannot recall ever having had a hit single or album (which I concede is no arbiter of quality, but it is a reasonable proxy for fame).

Sure, but in this case it's the distinctive name rather than the music that might ring a bell with people.

Who gives a fuck? If you start a duplicate thread we have mighty moderators who can actually merge it for you, it takes them a few seconds and is part of their fucking remit.....

Yeah, but they need to be able to find the thread to do that, don't they?  So that's where Cat's list comes in handy.

  9. I think it's handy to have a complete list of thread titles for reference.  Then if you are thinking of starting a topic, you can scan down the list to see if there already is something similar.  A search won't necessarily pick it up, as thread titles can be a bit abstruse.

I'd never heard of him either until I came on here and I like to kid myself I know quite a lot about obscure pop/rock acts from the 1970s & 1980s. He's clearly famous around these parts but would bet 99% of the UK population has never heard of him.

Possibly not, but I bet more than 1% are aware that there used to be a band called Throbbing Gristle, even if they never heard any of their music.

He passes my "recognised by someone in the pub" test on that basis.  Band names are often known while the names of all their members may not be.

Not to hijack a thread --- Kerslake's comment out of his mouth two months ago 'remission'.  Maybe hyperbole, maybe (well obvs) temporary.  But I left him alone probably regretfully 2020.  I'll accept the 'miss'.  He was the #1 name kept popping up in the DDP 2019 top 10 teams who was a miss...usually a superb indication he should be on the next year's team.  I went with Kerslake on this one.  *shrugs*

I've always wondered whether he'd been playing up the seriousness of his condition to guilt Ozzy into giving him those platinum credits.

Yeah, right.  If there was anything good to report I bet they would be all over the news with it.
