QuoteCate Blanchett has defended straight actors playing gay roles in film and TV.
Hollywood has been criticised for giving LGBT roles to straight actors and earlier this year Scarlett Johansson pulled out of playing a trans character following a backlash.
Blanchett played a lesbian in 2015's Carol.
She said: "I will fight to the death for the right to suspend disbelief and play roles beyond my experience."
The Australian actress disagrees with the idea that a performer only really knows a character if they have shared experiences.
Quite right too. It's called acting, for fuck's sake.
Let's take the criticism to its logical conclusion. What if we say heterosexual roles should only be played by heterosexual actors?
Or "cisgender" roles by .... you get the picture.
Bet that wouldn't go down well with the whiners.

I managed to get a year's premium Ancestry sub for half-price this week. Looks like the death index goes up to 2007 now, so hit me with the details.

Well said, Clorox.
There has been the occasional corker, though. My personal favourite:

"Rocks" when used to mean "wears".
A peculiar usage mainly perpetrated by the Daily Mail in its endless news-free reporting on Z listers and their attire.

Mention of "hereditary" always reminds me of a friend's mum. Her first grandchild was born with some condition (forget exactly what) which required a minor operation.
On being told that the condition was hereditary, grandma was indignant:
"There's never been any hereditary in our family!"

Condolences, Fixy. At least you were able to say goodbye, in whatever fashion.

WTF did these idiots expect to happen if they stood on a railway line?

Speaking as a straight female, I disagree that it's gay.

That model is quite beneficial when used on compost heaps, so I'm told.

Probably in the broadsheets, yes. There's also the story of her other actress daughter Francoise Dorléac who died tragically young.

Yes she is, because she's also Catherine Deneuve's mother.

5 hours ago, msc said:In my experience family at family gatherings are very good at sussing out these things and then gossiping about them loudly to all leading to rushed announcements ahead of what would be more preferable. Which is as plausible as going out to "upstage the bride on her wedding day", imo, a concept I'm afraid I am far too Glaswegian to understand.
Folk will always make a family event about them. Our wedding had three drunken fights, one gate crashing uncle who arrived solely to tell Mrs Msc to her face she was a spoiled brat (he got off on trying to ruin things for family members), one threat of violence using a knife, two big temper tantrums, and my brother in law dumping his girlfriend who showed up in a skirt so short it could double as a belt, to get off with the 40 year old hairdresser. Most of which me and Mrs Msc sagely ignored entirely. In laws, who'd have them?
Weddings are fucking horrible tedious affairs, and I avoid going to them.
Yours sounds like fun, though.- 1

Surprised they haven't got "Colour of Meghan & Harry's 1st baby" with accompanying shade chart.

She's not showing that much, and could dress to minimise it.You don't upstage the bride on her wedding day with a major announcement like that. It's extremely bad manners.
