TKAM was one of our school Eng Lit books, and beyond familiarity with the names of some of the characters I can't say I remember a thing about it. I suspect that this may be because each pupil had to read aloud a chapter, rather than us reading it ourselves.

I thought he was adopted. It's like Barack Obama & his godmother all over again! According to Wikipedia, it's foster-father. Seems he had to wait until he was 18 to get his Italian citizenship, as he wasn't adopted by an Italian family.

As mentioned elsewhere, the Ashes start today, so here's Wilf Rhodes who died aged 95 on this day in 1973. He was the first Englishman to score a thousand runs and take one hundred wickets in tests, and played his final test aged 52, making him the oldest test cricketer ever.

It would appear that although initially declared dead of natural causes, he was in fact shot. (Though you might argue that in his line of work, being shot is a natural cause of death).

Would've thought more than 2. Maudie Hopkins only died 5 or 6 years ago and she was the last wifie to still collect the Civil War Widows pension. This National Geographic report from November last year claims "fewer than 35" on the rolls of heritage groups that keep track of them.

You must be one of the only person not to watch it yet... Been watching a lot of Spooks recently. I've never watched it. I've never seen Star Wars or a Harry Potter film either. Me neither (Breaking Bad). Granted that would require satellite TV or Netflix, neither have I. SC Me neither, but I do have a DVD player! -

As its Wimbledon fortnight 21 years ago, champion of 1956 and 57, Lew Hoad died aged 59, of leukemia One year later, Pancho Gonzales died aged 67 Gonzales was world number 1 for eight consecutive years during the 50's, and though he never won Wimbledon, is remembered for his triumph in the longest Wimbledon match ever, beating Charlie Pasarell 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9 in 1969 ( a record subsequently broken by the Mahur/Isner match of 2010).
