According to her Wikipedia entry, she was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis at age 19; the causes of this is unknown but it can lead to liver cancer; the difinitive treatment is liver transplant. Average survival time from diagnosis is estimated to be 25 years (according to a German study). American footballer Walter Payton also had the condition

The Queen's cousin Katherine Bowes-Lyon has died aged 87. She had learning difficulties (as did her sister) and was hidden away in a home for decades. They were reported in the 1963 edition of Burke's peerage as having died in 1940 and 1961.
