I don't mind batter in the cricketing context, if only for reasons of consistency - bowler, fielder, wicketkeeper, batter. Makes perfect sense. Also, I cook fish in a pan.

  7. You've still only done a -4 downvote, as far as I can see.
  8. It's nearly 3 hours since @Paul Bearer fucked up his vote, and it's nearly tomorrow, and I haven't voted yet so note that this and future votes still contain PB's error, until such time PB corrects his vote (or the showrunner makes an executive decision and makes a correction on his behalf). Death Anniversary Thread

It's 13 years since the death of musician & comedian Chris Sievey, most famous for his alter-ego creation Frank Sidebottom. Sidebottom originated as a 'mascot' for his band The Freshies, famous for their minor hit I'm in Love With The Girl from the Manchester Virgin Megastore Store Checkout Desk. He died almost penniless, aged 54, from cancer, and faced a pauper's funeral until crowd-funding raised > £20k to cover the cost. The film Frank, with Michael Fassbender in the title role (sort of) tells his story.

    Death Anniversary Thread

Its 19 years since the death of actor (Manfred) Frederick Jaeger. Born in Berlin, Germany, he moved to Britain, via France, following Hitler's rise to power, becoming a British citizen in 1950. He graduated from the Guildhall Scool of Music and Drama in 1948, making his stage debut a year later. Over the next almost-half-a-century, he appeared in many Stage, Film, Radio and TV productions, often cast as a German officer (his last film appearance was as a German Flying Ace in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). TV credits included both comedy and drama - he appeared in both The Avengers and The New Avengers, and was a handy comedic foil for the likes of Barry Took and Kenny Everett, as well as appearing in sitcoms, such as Keeping Up Appearances, Yes Minster, Some Mothers do 'ave 'em and The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. He's particularly remembered in certain circles as Professor Marius, creator of K-9 in Doctor Who, one of three appearances in the show, which also included the equally-memorable Professor Sorenson in the story Planet of Evil. He retired from acting in 1996, moving to Mallorca, where he died following a long illness, aged 76.

    The Happy Birthday Thread

Its the 66th birthday of film and theatre director Phyllida Lloyd. Her career started with a five-year term at the BBC Drama Department, before being awarded an Arts Council birsary to train as a director, leading her to be appointed associate director of the Bristol Old Vic, The Royal Exchange, Manchester and the RSC, and thence the Royal Court Theatre, the Royal National Theatre and the Donmar Warehouse. This lead to an award-winning career in Opera direction with Opera North, before a return to stage plays, eventually producing the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! which saw success in the West End, on Broadway and elsewhere, leading her to be offered the chance to direct the film adaptation in 2008. She also directed the Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep. More recently, she's become the third Phyllida to be mentioned on DL.

    Death Anniversary Thread

Its 24 years since the death of British character actor, James Ottaway. Born in 1908 he was mainly a stage actor for the early part of his career, though he did make his television debut in 1937, in the play Capital Punishment, and his film debut in 1958's Passport to Shame. He became a familiar presence on TV towards the end of the 1950s, and in a career lasting well into the 1990s appeared in everything that was anything on TV, his last appearance being in a 1998 episode of The Bill, on the way appearing in Hancock's Half Hour (in The Blood Donor), Dad's Army, Minder, Quatermass, & Grange Hill, to name but a few. Appropriately enough for someone who appeared in both a TV Series and a film entitled The Man Who Finally Died, he lived until he was 90.
