Its 24 years since the death of football referee Arthur Ellis. He officiated at three FIFA World Cups (1950, '54 & '58), and also the first final of the European Cup (1954, Real Madrid 4, Reims 3). Singer & serial tax avoider Ron Isley, of the Isley Brothers is 82 today. He suffered a mild stroke in 2004, but recovered to marry for a third time the following year, and father a son a year after that. In 2007 he was sentenced to three year's prison for tax evasion, despite his attorney pleading for probation because of a "recent bout with kidney cancer". He was released from prison in 2010 which means his DDP bio is at least 13 years out of date. -

Its 25 years since the death of composer and arranger Edwin 'Ted' Astley. If the name is not familiar, his compositions will be - The Adventures of Robin Hood (the Richard Greene 1950s version) as well as the themes and/or incidental music to many ITC productions - The Champions, Danger Man, Department S, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Saint, Gideon's Way and The Baron. He also composed for many films as well as the incidental music for the BBC (notably for the series Civilisations) and British Transport Films. He retired from composing at the end of the 70s, prompted by the decline of the British film industry, but still arranged music, for example orchestral arrangements of works by The Who (Pete Townshend was his son-in-law) and Rolling Stones for the LSO. Original recordings of his music were only released in the US but about a year before he died he achieved UK chart success of a sort, as his theme from The Saint reached number three in the UK chart, performed by Orbital (for the movie of the same name). He died after a debilitating illness, aged 76.

Renowned bassist Herbie Flowers is 85 today. It's estimated he had appeared on over 500 hits by the end of the 70s (so how many now?). He was a founder member of Blue Mink (Melting Pot) and of the classical/pop crossover group SKY (Toccata). He was also a member of both CCS and T. Rex (at different times). Famously, he was the bassist on Lou Reed's the Walk on Wild Side, and wrote Clive Dunn's Grandad, and less famously also lived near me at one time. As well as bass, he also played double bass and tuba. -
I remember Ramsey and Coggan prior to Runcie, which more lor less spans my entire lifetime, though if I'd been asked to list the last half-dozen I'd have missed Williams!

On the bright side, she only had 2 number ones and they're both in this round, (and for those who are listening to them for the first time, be thankful that these are actually not too bad compared with the rest of her shit hits).

As Meat Loaf almost said, two out of four ain’t bad; don’t care too much for the other two. As an aside, Elvis’s version of Can’t Help Falling Love never reached number one in the US, whereas UB40’s version did. I don’t know what that tells us but it must tell us summat (probably).

The only question anybody should be asking themselves is “Do I prefer X over Y”, where X and Y are both contenders in the relevant list. Other variables, such as it being a cover version, shouldn’t enter into the equation (unless of course both versions are in the list).

Singer/songwriter & actress Hazel O'Connor is 69 today. Although not her first film role, she came to prominence as Kate in the 1980 film Breaking Glass, performing her own compositions, several of which were released as singles, with the soundtrack album achieving 'gold disc' status reaching number 5 in the chart. In January 2022, she was discovered unconscious at her home in France, after suffering a brain haemorrhage. She continues to recover. "Will You", from Breaking Glass reached number 8 in the UK chart, and features the saxophone of Wesley Magoogan, who later lost the fingers of one hand in an accident.
