Bollox. Once again, DeathCon coincides with my opera habit. Don't you people have any culture?

I hate to be seen to be backing BS here, but a quick glance at the Oxford English Dictionary confirms that 'hospitalized' is the correct English spelling. However, I still don't see the point of the thread.

That's not good, some of them will be holding scalpels first thing in the morning. They have the power to rebuild him

The Scots author Jeff Torrington has died at the age of 72 having lived with Parkinson's disease since his 40s; despite writing only two novels, half of his output ('Swing Hammer, Swing') won the Whitbread Prize for fiction in 1992 and he was regarded as a major figure on the Scottish literary scene.

Ideas And Possibilities For 2009
Twelvetrees replied to Anubis the Jackal's topic in DeathList Forum
I came across this piece in The Guardian at the weekend - about Martin Allen, an 'historian' who forged documents and placed them in the National Archives to back up his extravagant claims about the UK's collaboration with the Nazi regime. The article states that the CPS has declined to prosecute him, partly on the grounds of his deteriorating health. I suspect that the newsworthiness of the story may guarantee him a mention somewhere. -
Impressed at your support either way Twelvetrees, were you amongst the throng I was applauding? I'm assuming pretty much everyone made the journey from Bournemouth. I can't imagine that many die-hard Cherries' fans are currently living and working in Carlisle. I think there are two...it was a good open game, and Max Gradel (who has been our star player, despite the family problems he's had back home in France) ran you ragged at the back, but you've got a disciplined squad who, like us, play good football. A shame that our former manager and record appearance holder, Sean O'Driscoll, couldn't inspire his motley eleven to beat Cheltenham or we'd both be happy. Good luck in the play-offs - I'll be cheering for Carlisle - well anyone but Leeds or Doncaster.
-
Yeah, I thought that bizarre, if not typical. It could be they were celebrating the fact they drew a game. In other football, we are doomed barring a miracle. Yer missing the point. We ALWAYS invade the pitch on the last game. Yesterday - granted - there was some confusion. A bit restrained given the fact we've got another home game against Leeds. There's also been an ongoing battle of sorts as the club tries to stop the annual invasion with lots of stewards and repeated announcements that the team won't appear until the pitch is cleared. One thing the reporters missed was the number of CUFC supporters who walked towards the Bournemouth fans and applauded them, cos we know how they feel. It was appreciated - I'd like to say we'll bounce back but a 15-point penalty looms, and we still haven't got a confirmed buyer. This may be the worst season we've had - I just hope it's not our last.
-
Rampant Bournemouth...six on the bounce, and we have to do better than Cheltenham on the last day to stay up in what may be the greatest Great Escape ever. Imagine watching the film and seeing Steve McQueen actually get his bike over the barbed wire. However, we don't travel well and have a poor record against Carlisle. But you'll have a fight on your hands, MPFC, believe me. What drives us more than anything else is getting Southampton to look West rather than East for their local derby. Now that would be funny.

Most Significant Death For Every Year From 1963 To Present
Twelvetrees replied to chicago103's topic in DeathList Forum
Signifying only a cultural obsession with mediated spectacle. Hillary actually climbed Everest, whereas Heston did not actually part the Red Sea. Whose was the most significant achievement? -
I'm pretty sure the three never all worked together, but Widmark was in How the West Was Won with both Karl Malden and Eli Wallach, and with Kirk Douglas in The Way West. I still voted for Felt, though.

Read Any Good Books Lately?
Twelvetrees replied to maryportfuncity's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Okay, so I don't say much - but The Echo Maker by Richard Powers. Breathtaking. -
I must repeat my plea...Clive Dunn cannot rest until we stop selecting him. We are all collectively guilty of prolonging his life. In the name of mercy, let him go before the rest of the world forgets him and allow him a proper memorial.

It's about time someone got Felt up here.

I am somewhat relieved to see that someone in the British press has finally noted the death of Merv Wallace, something that has been mentioned here twice before, but without the necessary obit. Like my DDP team, Wallace made little impact in the highest form of the game.

Cricket Thread. Only Mad Dogs And Englishmen

Of interest, Lancashire's last amateur captain, Joe Blackledge has died at the age of 79. He played for only one season, with little success for either himself or his team, but served as President in 2001-02. -

Is this good enough for you? -
Done, and good luck on Monday. I've done select committees myself, and there's no need to get too nervous. Some hints, for ehat thet're worth: 1 - You know more than they do 2 - NICE will get a much tougher ride as they are publicly accountable. 3 - The setup looks inquisitorial, but the atmosphere generally isn't. 4 - If they ask something you don't know the answer to, just say so and offer to send the information later. That way, you can build up an ongoing dialogue. 5 - It's always quite warm in the committee rooms, so don't wear too many layers. You'll do splendidly, I'm sure - I just hope they take note.

Paul Raymond, who often went out of his way to give so many young women a leg up onto the career ladder, has evidently died at the age of 82.
-
He may not be biologically dead, but he is legally dead. A petition from his wife back in November for an investigation has prompted Chicago's Cook County Circuit Court to make this decision. I guess the money in the joint account must have dried up pretty quick.

Ideas And Possibilities For 2009

I can't say that speedway has ever been my thing, but evidently Malcolm Simmons was quite well-known in the 1970s (I love the use of the phrase 'almost celebrity status'). Anyway, it looks like he faces a bigger challenge than riding round and round in the dirt these days. -
I wish I could be as confident. Just as we start to turn things round on the pitch (four wins in five after our thashing of Luton), we slide into administration, almost certain relegation and will be forced to sell what decent players we have - some other team will get a real bargain when they sign Sam Vokes for a pittance in the Summer. The problem with Bournemouth is that the town has never got behind the team - even in the local paper, people are saying that the club should close. With that kind of support, the future is less than rosy.

Nick Du Toit / Simon Mann / Mark Thatcher
Twelvetrees replied to DevonDeathTrip's topic in DeathList Forum
According to his lawyer, Simon Mann has been extradited to Equatorial Guinea before his legal team were able to launch an appeal. Despite claims that he will not face the death penalty, Black Beach beckons. -
Can't find any other source...no other news outlets. Also the article is dated for June last year, there has been nothing to confirm that article in the meantime This is all very mysterious. We're going to have to look into this.It look like a credible source to me. A quick search of the major Middle East-focused media seems to suggest he's still alive, if not well. When it does happen, here's what we can expect to read. It's most likely that a prepared obit. was posted by mistake.

I'm holding out for my own DDP UP, George Whitman. Anyone who uses lit candles to trim their hair is, quite literally, playing with fire.
