    Miep Gies

I don't have the linguistic skills of Magere Hein, but I'll give it a try. The 'ie' is not exactly a diphthong, it's more like a prolonged 'i', so the right pronunciation would be something like the 'ee' in 'beer'. (What's on a man's mind...) 'Gies' is a difficult one. In another thread, when we were talking about the 'g' in 'magere', Hein suggested that the 'g' in Dutch is not very much unlike the 'ch' in 'Loch'. So, another way to write down Miep Gies would be 'Meep Chees'. (It's making me hungry! Time for a piece of Edammer, I think.)

    Rosa Parks

It was about time for another DL-success! Some people here were getting annoying out of sheer boredom. The sad thing is that it's Rosa Parks who was called to meet her maker. She's among the two or three people on Deathlist (one of the others being Wiesenthal...) that I'd like to become 140 or something. I mean: who would shed a tear for Pinochet or Botha? Or for obscure people like Niemeyer or Brooke Astor, for that matter? But they don't seem in a hurry to leave this world. It's always the good ones that go first, obviously. Rosa Parks was one of the icons of the civil rights movement, she will be dearly missed. But congratulations, she turned out to be a fine pick!

Well, it obviously is not. And why people start talking gibberish when they're behind their computers is beyond me. Is the electromagnetic field of the monitor affecting your brain or something?

    Sir Patrick Moore

That's due to his portrait on that side. He looks as if he's been dead for several months.

    Queen Beatrix

I was looking for any clues that this mr. Icke was referring to the Dutch Royals as lizards in a metaphorical way, but couldn't find any. For that reason, the one word that comes to my mind is: barking. The guy suffers from an incurable and severe form of schizofrenia. But it is indeed an amusing site.

    Maryport!!!

De Drie Gezusters is indeed a nice pub, if: -you're under 18 -you're desperate for a shag -all you want for a nice evening out is to drink a lot and make a fool of yourself. So yes, there's some nostalgia for me there...

You stress the first syllable, as if it were a dactyl. By the way, I always presumed that the most accurate pronunciation for 'loch' would be something like 'lok' (it says so in my dictionary, for that matter). The more guttural 'loch' is Scottish, I presume? And yes, 'magere' is dutch for 'skinny'.

How would a Dutchman pronounce your name Hein? Do you have to hoick anything up or is it as read? Good question. The 'ei' is a diphthong that English doesn't use. If you pronounce it as rhyming with 'fine', you're pretty close. The fact is that the dialects of Dutch spoken in Rotterdam and The Hague do exactly that. regards, Hein And just don't try to pronounce 'magere', it's going to kill you. (Which may sound appropriate for this forum, but whereas you're probably not a celebrity included on this year's list, there's nothing in it for us.)

I'm a proud citizen of the wonderful Kingdom of the Netherlands! I live in Groningen, in the north, where I was also born and raised.

A $1.3m birthday present. That's not to be sneezed at. regards, Hein This man says: 'Atchoo'!!

    Most Obsessive Deathlisters

Where am I on this list? I only posted a miserable 1.4 messages a day, but does it count for anything that they were of an incredibly high standard?

Which candadates will SURVIVE the year

I very much doubt it, though it would be an interesting idea. It seems that they had some problems with the celebrity-dom (celebritieness? celebritity?) of mrs. Muhammad.

Well, I thought I was quite clever: the name is Tom, 'Tomb raider' has some morbid connotation, and it gave me a fine excuse to search for Angelina Jolie-avatars, because of the movie. And a lousy one it is. And that's the problem, because people tend to believe Tomb Raider is my all time favourite movie, which it certainly isn't. If it wasn't for the prospect of seeing Angelina Jolie in a wetsuit, I would have spend the cinema-money on.... anything else. I have never been much into smilies, so I forgot to include a blank in the ( B ). Can't be bothered to ask the mods to change it, though.

    Margaret Thatcher

Well, I certainly don't wish her a 'Happy Birthday', I hope she has a really miserable day and spends it writhing in pain. You sadist! What did the Baroness Thatcher ever do to wrong you? (Apart from ruining your country for over a decade?)

    Margaret Thatcher

You're right, of course, mr. Hein! What springs to my mind now, is 'betweter'! (Just kidding! )

    Margaret Thatcher

Even if that observation is correct, it does not succeed in comforting me.

    Margaret Thatcher

I agree, but how can it be an excuse to support the conservatives, I wonder?!
  18. Tomb raider

    Margaret Thatcher

I don't think the negative emotions concerning Margaret Thatcher on this forum could be considered as being repressed. Well, it's a way of saying things. In Holland we call it 'sarcasm'.

    Margaret Thatcher

Well, it's not as if the Tories made the choice very hard for you...

Which candadates will SURVIVE the year

Apart from the rather vague description 'Any prominent Middle East politician', your list seems to exclude anyone not american. I can't recall having heard of anyone named 'Irving Kristol' before (but him being the founding father of the neocons, he obviously deserves to die soon). Claiborne Pell is even more obscure, though his Wiki-description is pretty extensive, and his involvement in the gay-rights-movement is highly laudable. And please don't mention Ruby Muhammad! The last time I did, all mods were snubbing me for days...
  21. Tomb raider

    Margaret Thatcher

I sense some repressed negative emotions towards the old bat at this forum. Do you guys ever wonder how a notoriously unpopular politician like the Iron Lady ever managed to get re-elected twice? Do you actually know people that voted for her?! (Not being a Briton, am I permitted to detest everything Thatcherite, by the way? Or do you feel chauvinistic about your pet hatred?)

    Ronnie Biggs

Well, obviously the judges don't want Biggs to do a 'pinochet', and that's for good reasons. Biggs gambled when he came back to the UK and he lost. He should quit his futile attempts to get cleared, and make the best of it.

    Titanic Survivors

Thank you. That is very sad. You don't happen to know what became of that priceless diamond necklace, by any chance, do you? I do! The old lady threw it in the ocean!

You'd better not mention the Hurricane! The ranting on the Higgins-thread could only be ceased by closing it. (One of the most amusing threads on the forum, it was!)

Have patience, my dear Janeo! It has been just over two weeks that Wiesenthal popped his clogs. We will have several more successes before the year is over, I'm sure of it!
