  1. (ANSA) - ROME, DEC 30 - Benedict XVI's condition remains stable and the ex pope is still attending Mass in the former monastery in the Vatican where the ailing 95-year-old German cleric lives, sources close to him said Friday.
Benedict XVI's health remains "stable", according to reports from sources in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the wake of Pope Francis entreaties to pray for his predecessor's worsening condition.
At the moment no further details have been leaked other than that the Pope emeritus continued Friday morning, in his room and despite the difficulties of a still serious clinical picture, to attend Mass, concelebrating it with his long-time assistant Mgr Georg Gaenswein and simply wearing a light stole over his hospital gown.
The four memores domini Vatican officials and the nurse Brother Eligius continue to form around Ratzinger, who is being kept under constant medical supervision by his personal doctor, a cordon of continuous security and assistance, the sources said.

  2. "Regarding the health condition of the Pope Emeritus, for whom Pope Francis asked for prayers at the end of this morning's general audience, I can confirm that in the last few hours there has been an aggravation due to advancing age. The situation at the moment remains under control, constantly followed by doctors." This was clarified by the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni: "At the end of the general audience Pope Francis went to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery to visit Benedict XVI. We join him in praying for the Pope Emeritus."

Notably the acting sovereign of the Vatican City in 2005 after the death of John Paul II.

This means that the extremely rare era of there being four living heads of state of the vatican (two popes, two acting sovereigns) is finally over.

    They were:

Eduardo Somalo (1927-2021) Acting Sovereign 2-19 April 2005 between the death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI. Somalo destroyed JPII's Ring of the Fisherman when he died. Somalo was therefore the last living person to have destroyed a Ring of the Fisherman, as Benedict's ring was not destroyed and apparently will not be destroyed even when he dies.

Benedict XVI (1927-) Pope from 19th of April 2005 to 28th of February 2013.

Angelo Sodano (1927-) Acting Sovereign 28th of February to 13th of March 2013.

Francis (1936-) Pope since 13th of March 2013.

To be correct Tarcisio Bertone was the Camerlengo during the Sede Vacante of 2013 not Sodano who was the Dean of the College of Cardinals.

    15 years later...

The Pope and the new Cardinals visit Benedict XVI

Well he doesn't look bad to be honest: his health seems to have improved after the known problems of this summer.
