Hello Everyone, here we are again. Time for a new round, are you up for it? Do you think we can ever surpass the score record of 1838 by DevonDeathTrip in the Death By Numbers of 2016? Well, I guess it's time you try! The general rules: Send me 50 main team names by pm or just post them in this thread, if you want, from now on until Dec 31st 2023, 23:59 GMT. You can choose one joker who gives you double points. Submission form: Just give them in the normal "First name", "Last name" format Please don't number them, don't give any added data, like birthdays. And only note their claim to fame if there might be confusion, for example: Simon Cowell (plastic surgery victim) Simon Cowell (wildlife conservator) The scoring is [year of birth] - 1900 = score. So someone born in 2001 will get 101 points in case of death You may submit the following people: living, not knowing their precise date of death (by execution, dignitas, or whatever), at least 18 years old on January 1st, 2023, and being somewhat notable. "Somewhat notable" means: they should at least be notable for something else aside from being terminally ill. "Something else" being something that has an effect on society. Terminally ill activists are okay if they've done at least something generally beneficial, a nationwide campaign, a more than just self-published book, or a notable court case. If they're only in the news because of their tragedy or because they need our sympathy I will not accept them. So no "cancer mums with cancer kids", no "terminally ill fans", no "ordinary person in a coma because of a car crash". This also counts for brothers/sisters/children of notable people - unless they are so notable that every relative is also notable by default, like the House of Windsor, or maybe the Bush family. Unfortunately, it is me who will decide if the person is famous enough. Previous BBC coverage will usually convince me. Also, please, no football player in a non-professional league, who is totally obiting only because of tragedy, and not because the club just so happens to also have a wikipedia page - or any other name that kind of exploits the rules, like Dave Marsh. Anybody that gets rejected in the DDP would also be rejected here! Sometimes maybe after the game even starts. However: "Oldest Person of XYZ" will always be allowed - even a completely irrelevant person (in the grand scheme of things) will be accepted if they are the oldest person of their country, or last survivor of World War II, Korean War, etc... Usually those people do not give many points, but maybe 5 pts is better than zero? Often, they are also of a certain "historic relevance", you know President Tyler's grandson, and such. Anyway, I will allow them. You can submit up to 10 substitutes. It was a little stressful for me to ask for substitutions in case of disqualifications. So, if you think that some of your names stretch the fame definition, just put in some more subs. I will make use of them automatically. Once you have submitted your team, it's the final submission. Substitution phase: Up until the beginning of the 1st of July 2024 GMT you may switch 5 old people still alive for 5 new ones for whom all the above rules also apply. You can make use of the 5 substitutions whenever you like, until July starts. But once you decide to switch out picks, they cannot score anymore. And the new names cant score before 1st of July, so ideally you'd want to keep that window as small as possible, but we know that life sometimes gets in the way. When is a hit a hit: If the person permanently dies in 2024 (GMT!) and their death gets noticed in written form by qualifying media outlets within 2024 or the first seven days of 2025. The QO rules are: Everything accepted by the Derby Dead Pool 2024 plus The New York Times. Your host: I will also submit a team and will do so below before Christmas and hide the names with "XXXXX XXXXX" and reveal them on January 1st. Main reason for not already submitting right now is that I want to avoid the situation of 2019, when I ran out of subs and then filled the gaps with "new" names. I will also make use of the substitution window, but only use 2 names. After all, there's always a pretty broad consensus of a couple of names (example 2019: Ivan Milat, Michael Sleggs, Tom Long), so I wouldn't steal anyone's names by picking those who are universally known anyway. Also, I will substitute comfortably before the end of the deadline, so you can see my two names. I will not read your submission emails until January 1st (I think you can check that) to prevent the impression that I might take a name from your posts for other deadpools. So if I'm unsure about a name of yours, I will talk to you in the first week of January. If you post your team right in this thread, you save me some work but also give away names. If you pm me, please make sure that I know what the mail is about in the header "Death By Numbers", "Team submission" or something like that. If you have other questions, you can also ask in this thread! I got tired of always thinking about where to put the activists, so here's a thread for them: First entry: Feminist Sheila Michaels, who spread the title "Ms." dead at 78 from leukemia: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jul/09/sheila-michaels-feminist-helped-change-the-world-with-ms-title-for-women http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40528950 I guess you can also put your anti-rape campaigners, black lives matter-folks, and Ralph Nader in here. Edit: Link fixed

Conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi shows up in good health at a concert: https://slippedisc.com/2024/04/a-rare-concert-sighting-of-christoph-von-dohnanyi/ He's 94 years old now and must have recovered well from that health crisis a couple of years ago - also mentioned in the article. -
Chris de Burgh "is happy if he gets to live another day" according to Germany's BILD: https://m.bild.de/unterhaltung/leute/leute/chris-de-burgh-bin-schon-froh-wenn-ich-morgen-noch-am-leben-bin-87858114.bildMobile.html But actually, he seems to be doing quite well at now 75.

Dozing off at court: https://politicalwire.com/2024/04/15/what-trump-is-doing-in-the-courtroom/ There might be a non-zero chance that this trial, which, in the grand scheme of things, is the least of all the possible crimes that he might face trial for, is the one that brings him down. Would be fitting though - the hush money to a pornstar story... This is a simple narrative, easy to understand, that he couldn't delay - because it's too small a case. He'll be a convicted felon. But even more, he might be forced to be on public display for hours. He might not be able to distract the audience with speeches or insults.

Every day, I check Wikipedia's list of daily deaths: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2015 I used to think that there is never any day with less than 7 deaths per day*. But that belief was refuted when the 6th of November only had 6 deaths (there's almost no chance left another death appears). Sometimes it takes a while for a death to be known and to be noted, but so far, the 20th of December only had one death. Could this be the least deadly day ever? *=That rule is not true for years prior to 2010, because Wikipedia wasn't yet as careful and thorough with their death notifications.

Ah well, it's a game of probability. You just have to pick likely candidates and hope that 2-3 of them actually die. But yeah, last month showed that there's no 100% pick.

Welcome to the next itineration of everybody's favourite obsessive-compulsive disorder, the DeathList Cup is back. We say goodbye to our previous host Spade_Cooley who hosted the game for two years and impressed us with his incredibly broad knowledge and ability to find a quip for every claim to fame, from pop culture to lesbian authors. Thanks a lot! The new management is me, gcreptile, who has decided to not defend the title and focus instead on being the most impartial, perfectly objective host possible. This means that the title is up for grabs, and, provided JoeyRuss also maintains his retirement, the winners of the past three years will not be competing. So if you want to add your name to the Hall of Fame, consisting of deadsox, DevonDeathTrip, An Fear Beag, Spade_Cooley, JoeyRuss and myself (x2), or if you want to add a second title to your name, this is the grand opportunity. These are the rules: The Deathlist Cup 1. This is a knockout tournament featuring one-on-one matchups between Deathlist forum posters. These matches will be determined by use of a random draw, using Random.org. 2. Unless we happen to end up with 2/4/8/16/32/64 entrants, then certain competitors will get byes to the Second Round. This will be based on results from the 2023 Cup: ie, winners first. 3. Please specify your wish to participate until the end of January 20th by posting in this thread, so that we can determine what the first draw looks like and if there are byes. 4. Players have a 10 day period of submitting their teams. For the first round, if you have not received a "bye", please send me your team by PM between January, 22nd and January 31st. the end of the month. For February, submissions open on February, 20th. The time zone is Greenwich mean time (GMT) in every case. 5. Your team has to consist of 11 main picks and three subs, so a perfect team would look like this 1. Adam Ant (joker) 2. Bob Backlund 3. Chelsea Clinton 4. Didier Drogba 5. Erika Eleniak 6. Frank Field 7. Green Gartside 8. Harry Hill 9. Ilias Iliadis (gold medal winner in the men's 81kg judo at the 2004 Olympics) 10. Joe Jackson 11. Kevin Keegan subs 12. Lennox Lewis 13. Meghan McCain 14. Nick Nolte Please explain who some of your more obscure selections are, should googling them not lead to an easy result. 4. Banned picks – we will have slightly higher fame requirements than before, matching my own perception of a slightly higher fame barrier in the DDP. Examples: - "Influencers": A minimum follower count of 100.000 in any one medium - "fame by association": Fringe and family of famous people will only be accepted if society has already been thoroughly aware of their existence, for better or worse (like Amy Price). - local fame: If the fame is "too local", they will not be allowed. High school coaches will not be allowed, "popular bar owners/traffic guides/etc..." will not be allowed, "town originals" will not be allowed. The notability has to extend somewhat beyond their own backyard. We will still allow college football coaches/players, elected politicians at every level, and no-name artists if their work can claim some recognition beyond their hometown. - "Awareness raisers"/"Cancer mums": Only those with nationwide impact will be allowed => I'll try to aim for something slightly higher than before, but still lower than the DDP 5. If in doubt, submit a pick, but the decision of the ref (me) is final and is not open to any court of appeal. If you think it’s a dodgy pick, it probably is. 6. Each match will take place over the course of a single month. For example, a February match would take place from February 1st to February 28th, a March match from March 1st to March 31st and so on... 7. Games will be scored in the following manner: A person in your team dies = 3 points A unique person in your team dies = 1 more point (ie 1 bonus point) Fatality – Your joker. Double points 9. Here is what happens in the case of a team member dying prematurely (ie on 29th Feb for the March game). If you discover this before the 3rd of the month, your top sub will automatically go into place. If it is discovered on the 3rd or after, sorry about your luck. If it turns out the person was dead and known to be (this is determined via a reference in a newspaper or magazine, not social media) then subs don’t come into play. This will upset at least one player a year. Will it lead to a huffy forum stormout in 2024? Let's see. 10. At the end of the month, the player in the match with the highest score wins that game, and will advance to the next round. The player who doesn’t have the highest score will lose, and be eliminated. 11. In the event of a draw, the following tiebreaks will be used: 1st tiebreak = number of hits 2nd tiebreak = average age of hits 3rd tiebreak = a coin toss 12. A player is only held to one team for a single match. If they win their match and advance to the next round, they may pick eleven entirely different people for the next round. In this way, folk who announce their terminal illness in, say, May, can be put to good dead pooling use. 13. Qualifying obits? Every single English-language newspaper, magazine or significant website, provided that they are not automatically generated by AI. Also Le Monde, Le Figaro, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, El Pais, El Mundo and Corriere Della Sera. If they still can't get a QO from that, then they really weren't famous. 14. For the removal of any doubt, any players who do not send in their team before the deadline will be DQ'd and replaced by the highest scoring loser. No matter how many sad PMs you send afterwards. This draw takes place in Month 1 (ie January) and is for matches taking place in Month 2 (February). After the draw, each player sends me (via PM) a team of eleven celebrities (and some subs hopefully) they think will snuff it in Month 2. Good luck and sign up to take part in this thread. Entries close by January 21 with the draw to take place immediately after.

I know, it's controversial and it will always be. And he was not squeaky-clean. I do wonder why "If I Did it" exists, the deflection theory makes sense to me.

Ahem... I also kind of think he didn't do it, but he nevertheless wanted to have the attention on him, as a sort of cover-up. I've heard the theory that he might have protected on of his elder children from the first marriage. A cover-up for a different crime might also be plausible. I don't know, in my mind, he doesn't look like a murderer. I can totally believe that Bill Cosby did it, the crimes were hiding in plain sight. I never got that vibe from Simpson. His former Twitter page made me think that he was more of a "player", a more suitable character for a small-time (or medium-time) criminal. You'd have to be a really big sociopath to have such a light-hearted persona in spite of having committed a murder.

Dead Toleman! Founder of the Toleman F1 racing team Ted Toleman has died yesterday after some health problems noted by (of course!) Octopus of Odstock. In fact, most players of the game ignored OoO's post, which is a shame, because they are among the most knowledgeable on this site. The Toleman team wasn't really successful in their four years, but they gave Ayrton Senna his first chance in the Formula One, and were later purchased by Benetton, now the Alpine F1 Team. wannamaker makes up some ground (so half of my prediction in the previous post came true), and msc puts the last scoreless match-up on the board. Hard to tell with the dementia footballers. Two years ago, I filled up empty slots with the dementia folks, but Jimmy Calderwood is still alive. Gordon McQueen died last year. Tony Claypole already died in 2022, but didn't obit... These are tough calls...

Well, that gave me the idea to walk around the world, only, somebody already did that (as much as possible), Briton Rosie Swale-Pope, now 77 years old: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_Swale-Pope

Ah, well, in the end I ignored him as I like to do with prisoners. But he is a DDP pick, so let's see if he gets a QO. With the war going on, he surely will though, imo.
