I didn't know anything about George Burns except that he was very old and kept going. There used to be a lot of jokes about it, like this Larson cartoon from 1991.

There is an old Eminem and Dr. Dre song called Guilty Conscience, released in 1999, where he is referenced. Funny thing is he had already been dead for 3 years, but it was harder to look that up before the internet.

"Look at the store clerk, she's older than George Burns".

Arguably Gloria Stuart’s role in Titanic is more memorable across more generations than any of the roles played by any of the names in your top 5.

I think that's fair, I was thinking about her career as a whole but Titanic really tipped the scale in her favour.

I would argue that Luise Rainer belongs with the formers that you mentionned : 2 oscars and one of the most prominent actress of the 30-40´s Hollywood movies. I doubt George Burns and Glynis Johns reache the level of the other 3 in terms of international notability though but I could be wrong and would glady accept it.

other names that comes to mind at the moment are Lupita Tovar, Mary Carsisle, Micheline Presle, Gisèle Casadesus and Earl Cameron but I can’t tell how famous they’ve been outside of the deadpool zone

Rainer was a bit of a one hit wonder (or two hit if you will, haha), wasn't she? Presle was definitely a huge star in France, I'll give you that, the rest were not in the same category nationally or internationally I think. I'd take Danielle Darrieux any day of the week ahead of Casadesus, for example.

Of your big 5, I'd swap out George Burns with Gloria Stuart, and if Eva makes it to her 100th I'd say she'd take Glynis Johns place. On the tier below I'd 100% add Nehemiah Persoff, Earl Cameron and maybe Caren Marsh Doll.

Caren Marsh Doll's biggest claim to fame is a movie in which she didn't even appear! That says a lot.

  3. If Eva Marie Saint makes it to her 100th birthday in 3 months, where would you rank her among the biggest movie star centenarians ever? Kirk Douglas, Bob Hope, Olivia de Havilland, George Burns and Glynis Johns are arguably top 5 at the moment. She should be up there on their level. Then we have the tier below, with the likes of Luise Rainer,  Gloria Stuart, Marsha Hunt, Norman Lloyd, Janis Paige, Baby Peggy, and so on.

Another question, has there ever been a movie with a would-be centenarian leading couple? Because Eva starred with Bob Hope in the 1956 comedy That Certain Feeling.

A mere 46 years after Matthew Garber. Has any other actor outlived their screen child by a longer stretch?

Marsha Hunt played Bobby Driscoll's mum in The Happy Time (1952). Driscoll died 54 years before Hunt.

  5. Two Australians to consider...

Steve Mortimer, OAM, halfback rugby player, born in 1956. He played for Canterbury-Bankstown. In 2008, he was named one of the 100 best Australian rugby league players of all time. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2021, and his brother Pete is quoted to have said that health problems have accelerated his dementia. Namely, heart attack, pneumonia & bronchitis in the past 3 years.

Michael Milton, OAM, the most successful Australian Winter Paralympics athlete ever with 11 medals to his name, starting in 1992 in Albertville. He was born in 1973. He has only one leg and was the Lareus World Sports Awards winner in the disability category in 2003. That year, he broke the record from 1987 of the fastest disabled skier. He also broke a national cycling record in 2007. He represented Australia in the Summer Olympics in Beijing in that sport. In 2013, he broke the world record for the fastest marathon runner in crutches, in 5 hours and 23 minutes. In 2018, another world record but for the distance 5 km in 32 minutes. Health-wise, he got bone cancer when he was 9, which left him with only one leg. In 2007, he got oesophageal cancer. In October 2023, he got cancer for a third time, this time bowel cancer.

Ffs, I was hoping that this thread would make it two years without an update, maybe a record for a deathlist pick. So close.

Sorry dude, I actually hadn't thought of that. :o I do like the sentiment of such a record happening organically. I'm sure there will be other opportunities, as I'm sure the committee will pick a lot of dullards in the future.

For as much as you make an appearance I already mentally changed your name to X a long time ago.

Funny you should say that. I mentally changed your name to Y because that's what I ask myself whenever I read the drivel that you post.

  9. God: ...That's odd, I just spotted that talented musician Tom Parker up here in Heaven. But he was so young, what happened?

Angel: Have you already forgotten? You were bored one day and wanted to play a game of Chinese whispers with all the angels. Whoever it ended up with would have their fate sealed.

God: Oh my Go...I mean self. No wonder I never run into Bob Barker around these parts. Hahahaha oh well, no harm no foul, innit?

Diego can like whatever post he wants to like. What does it matter to you? @Predictor you having a crummy day, and taking it out on him? I don't recall seeing in the guidelines that it's against the rules to like a post from years ago. If that's the kind of thing that upsets you, you must either be spoiled rotten, or have some serious issues you need to work on. Yikes.

...Umm, thank you for your input, person who I've never ever seen in my life. I'll be sure to take your feedback onboard because I care so much about your opinion. Are you one of those single thread posters?

Look, here's the thing. When you like or react to any post, you get a notification. It's a form of communication and thus affects me. Would you like it if someone constantly rang the doorbell only to say that they liked something mundane you said 9 years ago? Bet you wouldn't. But ok, I'll give Diego the benefit of the doubt in this case. Maybe he's a big piano fan and there are huge rivalries in the piano world, and her death filled him with such joy because he's...I dunno lets say an Elton John fanboy, that he just had to press like because there's one less enemy? Maybe even opened a nice bottle of champagine from the basement to celebrate? Who knows? :champagne:

But really, I'm semi-retired anyways so I really don't want to revisit whatever old dross I may have posted over the years. New guideline: If an old post of mine either made you laugh or looks to have been ambitious (long list/some sort of "project"), then ok, like away. If not, then don't.
