First public appearance since hospitalization.

He met with Dr. Jane Goodall last month, and there are some new pictures.

Absolutely. With all the great picks this year, I was beginning to convince myself that the committee knew something we didn't know about Robert Wagner, but he'll probably just be picked until he dies... which I don't see happening this year.

Noam Chomsky's long-time MIT assistant, Bev Stohl, recently posted an update on Reddit. The main takeaway is that he suffered a medical event last June and has been recovering since. We'll apparently know more about his prognosis soon. The wording (e.g., "He's still with us") isn't great, but it doesn't sound like his death is imminent, either.

I'm not convinced he's near death. But if he does die in 2024, my guess is that he'll die late into the year.
-
I think it's because the DeathList lists everyone at the age they would have after their birthday for that year. All the other celebrities who haven't yet celebrated their 2024 birthdays are also listed as being one year older. Edit: LWCZ beat me to it!

Rest in peace. Glad she was recognized and included in this year's list, though she never became a Dame before passing away...

A solid list, with a lot of variety, some interesting drops, a few notable misses (like Sir David Attenborough), and even some risky or early picks (like Pope Francis). The average age of a 2024 DL entry is 89.58 years old, as opposed to last year's 90.42. The oldest entry is still a 101-year-old person, while the youngest is 57 years old (in comparison to Andy Taylor, who was 62 last year). I predict fewer hits, but still double-digit deaths, because there are some names that just seem ripe for 2024 (like Jimmy Carter). However, I think most deaths will come from the top half of the list, which isn't too surprising.

In a way, the Pope Benedict XVI miss explains this pick. However, it would only make sense as a long-term commitment: he should now never be dropped until he dies, no matter when that is. Otherwise, there's no point in picking him this year and dropping him next year.

I have a very bad feeling about Sir David Attenborough's omission from the 2024 list... I hope to be proven wrong. Of course, we all want him to make it to 2025, as he's an international treasure, but he'll be turning 98 in May...
-
I just hope this won't be another Pope Benedict XVI scenario. If he makes it to 2024, I trust that he'll be included no matter what. Sir David Attenborough, who turns 98 in May, also needs to be brought back. Both are far safer picks than Alan Alda and Robert Wagner, in my opinion.

I posted some pictures from the funeral, but I see that most were already in the thread. Not sure how to delete my message, so I'll just say it's really sad to see Jimmy Carter in such a state. There would be nothing more poetic than him joining his wife today or at least very shortly. They lived almost their entire lives together.

I found a close-up video on Twitter. His eyes are closed and he honestly looks like he is ready to go...

Brief interview of Roland Dumas by Darius Rochebin in late 2022:

Here's an uneventful Instagram live broadcast with Robert Wagner and his daughter Natasha from two weeks ago. The main takeaways are that he has trouble walking, was diagnosed with mild COPD, exercises three days a week, and recently did a 90-minute documentary about his career that should come out in the next months. Barring a severe fall, he's probably a safe drop for 2024.
