Appearently, she passed away in September. So she didn't make it to 100. There's an interesting picture on that German Wikipedia page: This is, presumably, a scan of a death notice in the German newspaper Saale-Zeitung of 6 September 2014. What caught my attention is the bit of text at the bottom, which asks for a donation to charity instead of flowers. I wasn't aware such a request (not in the Netherlands) is also a German thing. How's that in other parts of the world? regards, Hein

    Name Shame?

A location. As it happens, it's around the corner from my old dentists. While reading your answer I realised that my question has unintended poetic form. Yes. If only it had been about a person, it would have qualified as a clerihew. Now that you mention it, The 'Reading' bit, Is that a location Or an occupation? I'm aware of that form, I've used it several times in Dutch. I like writing light verse, typically as inscriptions in books intended as presents. I tried similar things in English, without success. I didn't expect it to come naturally in prose. I feel a bit like William Whewell, who wrote in his first edition of An Elementary Treatise of Mechanics (1819): "Hence no force however great can stretch a cord however fine into an horizontal line which is accurately straight." According to my sources he changed the wording in the second edition. regards, Hein

So that's how they use those target poles. These are similar target poles used in shooting contests by a schutterij, bits of folklore in Dutch and Belgian Limburg. As pictured they're not being used. Nevinson's picture makes clear how that is done. I wonder what those wires are that the target soldiers are fiddling with. regards, Hein

I had to Google for Burns to get an idea what all that is abount. I vaguely remember the band had a bit of a hit in the 80s. Recent pictures of him are, ehrm, disturbing. The name of the band is a stroke of genius, we should consider hiring it for DL's 30 Year Jubilee Party. After we rob a bank, that is. regards, Hein

New Here And Just Saying Hello

Oh dear, I may have been confused about language codes. Anyway, with that you can download a correct version, I suppose. Glad to be of help. Holiday. In five weeks I travelled through Norway and Sweden, and a day in Finland. Lots of fjords, glaciers, forests, tundra, raindeer and birds, but few parrots. Cities I enjoyed were Narvik, Stockholm, Uppsala and Göteborg. Oslo is dull. I already knew some Danish, so Norwegian and Swedish weren't gibberish. I bought a Swedish dictionary and grammar in advance, but I never got around to learning it properly. I didn't need to, most Swedes speak English fairly well and are keen to do so. In rural Norway the dictionary proved useful. regards, Hein

Ah yes, that happened to me a few times while copy & pasting to write the instructions. That ftp server closes the connection after something like a minute has passed without user input. Does fjärrvärden translate to remote? ETA: from Google Translate I learned it means remote host. When I was in Sweden, some 10 years ago, I could do simple bar conversations in Swedish. I should have known. Dutch waard means publican. When that happens, restart from step 9. You can reuse previously used commands in ftp by tapping the up/down cursor keys to save time and typing. As a matter of fact you're past the tricky bits, you should be able to get the download without much trouble, just get on.a bit. regards, Hein

New Here And Just Saying Hello

I watched the Ajax v Barcelona match, not much fun for Ajax supporters. I'm not a Ajax supporter, so I enjoyed it. To business. Googling kommandotolken taught me that that is Swedish for command line, so it looks like what follows might work. The command line interface is indeed a remnant from the 80s, but it's still around and provides a few utilities for which there are no built-in graphical equivalents in Windows. The following description is copied and pasted from a US English Windows. It probably works without change in a Swedish Windows, but I never used one, so you may have to change a name or insert a bork here and there. Make sure that your computer has a working connection to the internet Start Windows Explorer, or any other file manager Create a download folder for Firefox on your file system. The exact location and name are not important, but do remember them. In this example I use C:\FFDL. Start a command line interface (CLI). Click Start menu/Run. In the edit box with prompt "Open:" type cmd. On success a new window opens with a command line interface, with a prompt like: C:\Documents and Settings\Magere Hein\Application Data In a CLI commands are entered by typing a command line, followed by hitting the [enter] key. In the rest of this instruction only the command lines show, not the [enter] key. Check if the prompt starts with the same drive indicator letter as the path to the download folder made in step 3. If it's not, change working disk to the latter by typing the letter in CLI, followed by a colon, like X: Change working directory to the download folder created in step 3. CLI command: cd \FFDL Start the ftp client. Command: ftp The prompt of the command line should change to: ftp> Connect to Mozilla's ftp server with command: open ftp.mozilla.org If that succeeds, you'll be shown a message like: Connected to ftp.mozilla.org. 220- 220- ftp.mozilla.org / archive.mozilla.org - files are in /pub/mozilla.org 220- 220- releases.mozilla.org now points to our CDN distribution network and no longer works for FTP traffic 220 The server prompts for a user name: User (ftp.mozilla.org:(none)): I presume you're not a user on that server, so we're going to log in anonymously, by typing the command: anonymous The server prompts for a password. You may leave this empty by tapping the [enter] key, but customarily the email address of the anonymous user is used. Type the command: user@example.com A message is displayed, which you may ignore, but the last line should read: 230 Login successful. Change source directory to where firefox downloads are. Command: cd /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/win32/sk Presumably you want a Swedish language version. The server should show a message like: 250 Directory successfully changed. Start downloading the install executable with command: get "Firefox Setup 33.0.2.exe" The pair of quote marks are needed. The server should start the download with a message 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for Firefox Setup 33.0.2.exe (36957256 bytes). This will take a while. When it's done the server displays a message like: ftp: 36957256 bytes received in 101.45Seconds 364.28Kbytes/sec. Close ftp with the command: bye Install Firefox from the download folder created in step 3 by starting the executable Firefox Setup 33.0.2.exe. There are several hurdles at which you may stumble, but let's see how far you get. Good luck. regards, Hein

My Swedish is a bit rusty... It seems the firefox executable can't be found or got damaged. Installing a latest version for your Windows should fix that. I'm watching footy now, but I'll get back to this after that. regards, Hein
