Ah, General Giap... I had 'im on my DDP team once or twice. That old soldier may be fading away, but he doesn't seem particularly keen on dying. Besides, hardly worth points. regards, Hein

Of course. People, celeb or not, dying of a horrible disease are "news". Nonceleb dead people are, well, dead. Makes perfect sense when you make money by printing "news". regards, Hein

Canonisation - April 2014. That should make him happy... regards, Hein

Chopper Read is a member of my DDP main team, so I'm following developments with much interest. regards, Hein

Good man. Last call. Banshees, we'll be at the dwarf throwing tent at 1pm. Carol Ann, we'll be at the cocker-whacking tent at 2pm. Tuber, we'll be at the clay pigeon tent at 3pm. LG, we'll be watching AC/DC in the bandstand at 4pm. DDT, tractor pulling at 5pm. Everyone else, Dolphin at 6, Millers at 7, Parrot at 8, make your own way home from there. Unfortunately I'll be busy in the bit-biting building, trying to get some programming finished before 1 Oct, so you'll have to do w/o me. Enjoy yourselves. regards, Hein

Drink is involved. I've been told alcohol affects memory, although I don't remember how. regards, Hein

Vera and the Death List will meet again in 2014. Urgh. regards, Hein

Fishy, that. Is there a conspiracy going on among celebs, so that they won't die? Do the media conspire to censor reports of celebs' deaths? Have deadpoolers become stupid? regards, Hein

Taylor's appeal rejected. regards, Hein

It is eerily quiet at the moment and it has been for quite a while. The calm before the storm? We have less than 100 days till the end of the year. At this rate people might be hoping to be included on next year's list to take advantage of its magical protection. Whether it's the calm before the storm remains to be seen. I don't have my spreadsheets at hand, but I seem to remember one that showed that November and December are top months for DL hits, along with February and March. The differences aren't big, mind, and possibly statistically insignificant. regards, Hein

Not exactly world famous, but at least reasonably famous in those countries where Dutch is spoken: Hugo Raes, Flemish author and poet died yesterday, aged 84. I met him many years ago when he gave a lecture at the local library. I read several of his novels. No report in the English speaking Net, probably never will be, but here's a Dutch one. regards, Hein

I decided to split this topic from "Queen Elizabeth II", as I think she's worthy of her own topic. ETA: and made a complete mess of it; I completly forgot HRH already got a topic, in which adrian already posted the news. Anyway, mess sorted now. In the news: Beatrix breaks cheekbone in a fall. regards, Hein

I presume this is a reply to my moving Guest's post about Carolyn Cassady. The article Guest refers to simply says: "once married to Neal Cassady, wonderful person", so I hope you'll forgive me for the move, I wasn't aware of the fact that she's got a Wiki of her own. That article, BTW, doesn't say much more than: "once married to Neal Cassady, wonderful person". Oh, I see she's written two books as well. I guess they say: "I was once married to Neal Cassady, I'm a wonderful person". If you want to, I'll move the post to the "Authors last..." topic. regards, Hein -
A brilliant picture. I can watch it for hours and still discover new details. The jacket with the medals stuck on it on the coat rack, the lamp in the right (my grandma had one of those), the portrait of mr K. in the far right corner... Do I see that correctly, twice Hero of the Soviet Union? Why's there an arrow sticking out of the large piece of wood on the desk? Thanks for posting. regards, Hein

Quite a shock in these parts. Additional fact: he died from MDS. regards, Hein

Today in 1994 Austro-British philosopher Karl Popper died in London, aged 92. His ideas about problem of demarcation (i.e. the line separating science from opinion) and his liberal ideas on political philosophy are still hotly debated. This same day in 1944 saw the start of the Battle of Arnhem. This brilliant intelligence cock-up cost the lives of 2000 allied soldiers, among whom Lieutenant John Hollington Grayburn VC, KIA 20 September 1944. regards, Hein

Do you have a source for that claim? regards, Hein

Today in 1736, German-Polish physicist and inventor of the thermometer, Daniel Fahrenheit FRS, died in The Hague, aged 50. regards, Hein

As I understand it there are still appeals possible and also the Indian Supreme Court needs to confirm the sentences. Then there's applications for a pardon: this all may take some time in which they can have nasty accidents. I won't stick any of them in my DDP 2014 team, mind. regards, Hein
