Star or the like very visible high in the sky over Glasgow. Almost as high as the horizon line limit. Mentioning this for Cat when he's around, last time iirc this turned out to be Venus. Or Jupiter? Only a zillion miles in that one...

The brightest near-overhead star at 3am in Glasgow would be Dubhe in Ursa Major. Here's the sky chart for said location and time. Note that east and west aren't reversed; if you were to hold the chart above your head to use it, the directions are correct.

When I were but a lad of 9 or 10, this fellow from Carry On Teacher got me going when shown on the telly:

But surprisingly not in Man About The House or Robin's Nest. Musta been the haircut.

For me it was Jim Dale.

Does anyone in the UK know what happened to "The Enigma Hut"?
They were making beautiful Enigma machine replicas.
Then one day, they were gone.

I've no idea why but they went out of business on 19th February 2019.

Who else saw it? @Cat O'Falk hope you did and thanks for the advice.

I've been looking at them over the last month or so as they became gradually closer to each other. I didn't get to see them at their closest on the 21st due to cloud cover but I did get to see them through my telescope on the 20th when they were marginally further apart.

Well, shit, that's terrible, very sorry to hear that Cat. If thats your current treatment, then there's clearly still a fight to go there, so genuine best wishes at this time.

(Well somebody had to say something instead of us all posting sad emoticons at 9 in the morning!)

    Genuine LOL moment. :D

I've an appointment with the knife on Wednesday 30th December.

Why can't people buy and plant flowers etc?  Seems like a very reasonable way to pass the time doing nothing stuck at home.  FTR (and nipping your next comment in the bud before you make it -- see what I did there?) yes here in Lafayette, LA the roadside flower gardens that pop up seasonally are well and fine and I saw a few folks stopping to purchase whatever.

We've always had stupid rules. You can't go to the garden centres but you can go to the off licence to buy a bottle of gin.

Before they changed the Sunday trading laws in 1994, you could:

    • buy a newspaper and a porn magazine but you couldn't buy a Bible.
    • buy fresh carrots but not tinned or frozen ones.
    • buy booze for the dad but not formula milk for his baby.
    • buy sausage and chips but not fish and chips. That's why fish and chip shops didn't open on Sundays.

One hardware shop owner flouted the rules by selling customers a single shallot at an inflated price and throwing in something such as a watering can as a free gift. He was successfully prosecuted under Sunday trading laws.

  7. Millions of garden plants are set to be binned as a result of Covid-19.

    • The closure of 2,000 garden centres and nurseries mean makers of what's called "ornamental horticulture" have no outlet for their plants.
    • The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is asking the government for financial assistance of up to £250m to help the industry avoid collapse.
    • It warned that up to a third of producers could go bust.
