Joss Ackland

Recommended Posts

I am aware of the British Character Actors thread but I thought it was time to set Ackland up with his own thread. He was born in 1928, so he may be one to keep an eye on. Possibly one for the 2021 DL.

There was a time his voice could be heard on virtually every advert on the telly

For the benefit of posters who can't imagine a world without a Greggs within sausage roll chomping distance of a Greggs, mobile phones or fuck buddies being a commonly accepted thing I should probably point out that Joss Ackland is a veteran character actor due to turn 93 in February and his "selective" filmography on his Wiki page boasts what might best be described as a fuck-ton of roles. Obitable, then.

Find it remarkable he's lived as long as he has. He was in a Tales of the Unexpected episode with Denholm Elliott which was broadcast in 1980 and Ackland looked genuinely old then. I'd have him on the list next year with Geoffrey Palmer and Colin Jeavons if they are all at the starting gate for 2021 which I actually doubt.

You doubted well.

Yes, really sad about Geoffrey. A truly great actor albeit dying peacefully at home aged 93 is a decent way to go.

Seriously?

He's a prolific actor who's cropped up on TV, stage and film regularly for as long as I can remember.

To be fair his last credit was eight years ago now.

He is also one of the rapidly dwindling voice cast of the 1979 trauma inducing animated version of Watership Down

Hannah Gordon, Richard O'Callaghan, Clifton Jones, Lynn Farleigh and Derek Griffiths all appear to still be alive so he's unlikely to be the last survivor as they are all significantly younger than Ackland. Admittedly he's outlived all the other main stars.

I liked his small role as a Russian diplomat in The Hunt For Red October.  He had some good scenes with Richard Jordan in that.  Of course, Ackland has outlived Jordan by nearly 30 years now.
