Die Zeit is definitely a QO:

A potential victory now relies upon Carl Bean, Rick Laird and/or Chhang Song as Jayanta Mahapatra now COVID-free

We caught the tail end of that India wave - just as they were getting it back under control. If I had to guess, Azam Khan survives, too. And Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was a bad pick from the beginning, I should have gone with my first sub, Nacho Laun instead. Stan Swamy was a latter half of the month hit anyway - well, let's see. But I think the ventilator shortages and so on are over.

Hadn't updated Mickenbecker yet as this round has really been so slow. But yeah, here’s an inconsequential update.

  1. Spade_Cooley vs msc 6 - 9

  2. Gcreptile vs Banana 13 - 12

Well, it’s time. There will be a new cup champion after this round.  One is a constant underachiever in past cups. The other is a former cup host. But only one can win. Who will it be? We’ll see at the end of the month, but for now, the Masterlist.

  1. Bob Dole - msc

  2. David Gulpilil - Reptile

  3. Alan Igglesden - Reptile

  4. Sasha Johnson - msc

  5. Axel Kahn - Reptile

  6. Rick Laird - msc, Reptile

  7. Terry Lubbock - msc, Reptile

  8. Sakti Mishra - Reptile

  9. Gary W Moore - Reptile

  10. Andre Rademan - msc

  11. Soulaimane Raissouni - msc

  12. Sandra Richardson - Reptile

  13. Jehan Sadat - msc

  14. Saranya - msc, Reptile*

  15. MakSim - msc*

  16. Susie Steiner - msc, Reptile

  17. Catherine Wybourne - msc, Reptile

I haven't really been following this at all. (I mean, I stepped out this year, so no need).

Now we have hot DDP Committee on DDP Committee action?

Commiserations Spade, I genuinely thought you'd win right up to, well midnight right there. Bit surprised my somewhat lax Googling has lucked me into a final. And that we suddenly have the DDP Co-host derby too, best of luck to Reptile.

No idea how it happened Willz, I think the genuine contenders all tripped on a Banana skin somewhere!

Another unfortunate semis outing for myself

Good luck to gc heading into the finals

It was a very anticlimactic previous round, kind of disappointing to all (except to those who survived I guess!). In the end, our game was decided by the Mufti three hours into the new month.

I expected more carnage.

Good luck to you, msc! Seems like I have more late-stage cancer people, you have more critical ones. It's a bit unpredictable.

You have a unique joker, which I also saw, but kind of ignored. That could be an advantage.

And the only reason I was looking closely enough to spot duplicates is this game is a complete mystery to me so thank-you for the insight.

I now know it will remain a mystery to me and won't be troubling any scorer with an entry. Ever.

Heh, well, the duplicates indicate that I basically just throw them all together into an Excel list as the names appear. I already see that I hadn't noticed that Mike Bailey (weatherman) had since passed away.

And that's the problem - you can collect, but you also need to prioritize. I posted this here because I know that most of these names are kind of useless, and will never be needed again in the future.

All these moments will be lost....like tears in the rain.

This year, COVID did its work for us though. Just look for Covid people on google news, especially in combination with oxygen support. This ballooning of names will not happen again the future (hopefully).

Well done msc and Reptile - I think most money was on the losing semi finalists being the finalists.

Also delighted to see 5 of my Poker picks on the pitch in the Cup Final. Encouraging.

I think. which shows just how fuckin' sad I can be on occasion.

He's definitely gone though. Brings a certain degree of piquancy to that scene I guess.

Pity he was never in anything else of any moment really, some blind monk thing iirc but it was crap.

Mind you neither was Harrison Ford really.... star wars and indiana both yawnfests for me. Horses for courses.

Same here.  There are only four people I've heard of on that list, and two of those I'm only aware of from posts on here (Kumar and Bjelland).

Looks like Keith Ape's name is now out there for those of us trying to work out how famous he is within the k-pop sphere.

My team

Bob Dole - American political, presidential candidate, DLer, etc.

Sasha Johnson - The BLM leader in the UK who got shot. Famous enough to have a loud BBC regular profile for years before that.

Rick Laird - original guitarist from Mahavishnu Orchestra, although he did leave before their most famous song (Planetary Citizen  which is sampled in Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy).

Terry Lubbock - campaigner about his sons death and against Michael Barrymore for 20 odd years now.

Andre Rademan - a rugby executive. He's only here because he's not well tbh.

Soulaimane Raissouni - Editor/journalist from Morocco whose current jail term and hunger strike has caused mass government protests.

Jehan Sadat - the widow of the Egyptian President who got assassinated in the 80s, and a popular feminist icon in Egypt.

Saranya - Highly popular actress... in India where she's the equivalent of a Patsy Kensit type.

MakSim - One of the better selling artists in Europe, but somewhat obscure here (or indeed nearly everywhere) as nearly all of those sales are in her native Russia.

Susie Steiner - the crime novelist

Catherine Wybourne - the Digital Nun. She and the rugby guy are the most obscure names on my team, but she passed the Willz test on notability (to my surprise tbh).

Obscure but influential 70s bands, anti-government demonstrations, how parochial chart fans get (I now picture a 90s Russian music fan going "Who is this Wet Wet Wet?") - I love finding out about this sort of stuff.

But mostly they're there because I think they're ill!

Well, she's a columnist on a weekly newspaper (wrong foot for me but hey ho) plus I'd say she's THE digital nun.

I mean, Sister Wendy would have killed for the following she's got, and Sister Wendy was no slouch with admirers.

I didn't really have to rule out many this year for the Poker - mainly because after 5 years folk are beginning to realise what they can get away with! I check everyone whose name I don't know, make my judgement call and that's it. Also, fewer fallers this year before the end of entries - Kaunda and Miscavige and that's it I think. I'm guessing some folk are still on tenterhooks to find out whether a pick has died yesterday or before.

Aye, wasn't a criticism, more that passing your criteria is a seal of approval. Fair point about her fame (although I'm old enough to just remember Sister Wendy's TV show in the early 90s?).
