Martti Ahtisaari

Recommended Posts

Thread for discussion about Martti Ahtisaari, former Finnish president (1994-2000), peace negotiator and global elder emeritus.

Ahtisaari is overweight and recently survived COVID-19. He or his wife Eeva have not been seen in public much since that. He's one of the five global elder emeriti along with Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, Fernando Cardoso and Ela Bhatt.

Yeah it’s a good thread.

Yes, in my neck of the woods he is famous for his role in creating the Aceh peace settlement in 2005, bringing to an end a long-running conflict.

I misread that at first and thought it said illuminati. So I was thinking, why aren't Prince Philip and Rupert Murdoch on the list?

Either he's lost weight or you're being a bit harsh.

He has lost a lot of weight during the last 5-10 years.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, partly in a care home :(

That explains why he hasn't been seen in public for a year.

Both of his predecessors also had alzheimer's, Mauno Koivisto had it for 5 months before dying after a fall, Urho Kekkonen fought it for around 6-8 years or more.

I once picked him in one of the Scavenger Hunt Pools because he was conspiciously absent from public. So this must have been a longer issue by now.

As a Nobel Peace Prize winner, he might even be borderline DeathList worthy.

Former first fady Eeva Ahtisaari, 85, attended Paavo Lipponen's (Prime Minister when Martti Ahtisaari was the President of Finland) 80th birthday party, Martti of course didn't. Eeva's predecessor Tellervo Koivisto, 92, widow of Mauno Koivisto was also there. Tellervo is using a rollator and Eeva A walking with a stick.

Eeva Ahtisaari gave a small statement on Martti's condition: "The change has come little by little, there has been time to prepare for it"

Martti Ahtisaari didn't attend the Independence Day Church Service at Helsinki Cathedral today, too ill to attend.

However his wife former First Lady Eeva Ahtisaari was there as was her predecessor Tellervo Koivisto and Halonen & Arajärvi couple:

He hasn't made any appearances in over two years now as far as I know.

Images from the funeral

Hage Geingob, President of Namibia (82)

Eeva Ahtisaari (87)

Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania (73)

Carl Gustaf XVI King of Sweden (77)

Edit: Oh, and of course Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland (79) there too.

Standing: Tellervo Koivisto (94, former first lady and widow of Mauno Koivisto)

Ahtisaari's successor Halonen (not pictured) looked quite doddery there. I'm suprised Tellervo Koivisto attended as I recall she had a bad fall some years ago. Aceh rebel leader Malik Mahmud (84) was also there.
