The Nobel Prize Dead Pool

Recommended Posts

Following a longer period of thoughts and after realizing, that the DDP-hosts do not really enjoy a large number of Nobel laureates in their pool, I have decided to start the first Deathlist-competition dedicated to Nobel laureates: The Nobel Prize Dead Pool

The rules are easy: Pick one living Nobel laureate by each category (Physics/Chemistry/Medicine/Physiology/Peace/Literature and Economic Sciences), who you think will die during the following next ten months. This will make six nominated people.
No laureate can be chosen twice, so check who was picked by other deadpoolers!

People, who accepted the award on behalf of someone or represent an organization are excluded from the contest, the 2021 laureates cannot be chosen since they are unknown until October!

This inaugural year will pe shorter, since I had planned to start it from February 1st, the day the nomination period for new laureates ends. But things happened which made this pool to start later.

Your team starts from the moment, you sent it in and ends on January 31st, 2022.
As source will be accepted the official Nobel Prize website www.nobelprize.org. (The deaths will be mentioned there, so no lost hits to expect!)

Since not so many Nobel laureates die during a year - 2017, 2019 and 2020 it had been 9 dead laureates per year, 2018 there were 18 (So do not expect a rushing contest!) – the scoring will honor every hit in a special way.

So good luck and enjoy the contest.

This was the easy part, now it is getting complicated: The scoring will appear on a first digit base.

The first digit will represent the category:
As less laureates are alive in a category, as more points you can score. Literature has the least living laureates (18), so here you can score 6.000 points.
The second category is Peace (31 living laureates, 5.000 points), and is followed by Economic Sciences (42 living laureates, 4.000 points), Chemistry (63 living laureates, 3.000 points) and Medicine/Physiology (69 living laureates, 2.000 points).
Physics has an amount of 73 living Nobel laureates, which makes it worth 1.000 points.

The second digit will honor the decade, the laureate was awarded:
For everyone from the 2020, you will receive 900 points. The worth of the earlier decades reads as follows:
2010s – 800 points
2000s – 700 points
1990s – 600 points
1980s – 500 points
1970s – 400 points
1960s – 300 points
1950s – 200 points

There were no laureates left from the decades before, so a sore of 100 points is not possible!

The third digit will show the age of your laureate:
In case, you hit is younger than 30, he/she will be worth 90 more points.
30-39 – 80 points
40-49 – 70 points
50-59 – 60 points
60-69 – 50 points
70-79 – 40 points
80-89 – 30 points
90-99 – 20 points
100-??? – 10 points

The last digit gives a bonus score:
In case, the laureate is the last survivor of his awarding year, there will be a 9 points bonus.
The youngest death of the contest will get 8 points (awarded in February 2022!)
A laureate from an African country (nationality at time of death!) 7 points
A laureate from an Asian country (nationality at time of death!) 6 points
A female laureate will bring 5 points.
A laureate wo was awarded alone (organizations excluded) 4 points
A laureate from a South or Middle American country (nationality at time of death!) 3 points
A laureate who comes from Germany (born there or naturalized) 2 points
The oldest death of the contest will score 1 point extra (awarded in February 2022!)

So for example:
The last laureate to die was Paul J Crutzen.
He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 and died at the age of 87.
So he would have been worth 3.630 points. (He died in Germany, but was Dutch, so no bonus!)

Sorry, I don't like "first come first served" pools.

Than I will be sure you will find some other pool here to join, you like.

Best of luck!

Of course.  Just giving a reason why I won't be playing.  I prefer a level playing field, where people make their selections in isolation and they are not revealed until the game starts.

Following a longer period of thoughts and after realizing, that the DDP-hosts do not really enjoy a large number of Nobel laureates in their pool, I have decided to start the first Deathlist-competition dedicated to Nobel laureates

Just wondering if you will be starting another Dead Pool for obscure people with hard to spell names? :D

Me neither.

I'll take Goodenough for chemistry, Gorbachëv for peace, Munro for literature, Watson for medicine, Penrose for physics and I refuse to name a sixth nominee because economic "science" isn't a real Nobel prize.

Next year, I plan a nomination period before it starts.

This year I decided to start now due to private reasons.

In pandemic times you never know.

But you have to replace Aung San Suu Kyi, since she was already chosen by @Book

Japanese scientist Isamu Akasaki, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for his creation of energy-saving sources of white light, died at 92 years:

First hit for me

Congrats to @TomTomTelekom

The first hit of he new pool occured on April first, and it was not a joke.

Akasaki is worth 1.826 pioints:
Physics-laureate (1.000) in 2014 (800) aged 92 (20) from Asia (6).

An adequate inaugural first hit!

First miss of this pool: Robert A. Mundell has died!
He was worth 4.634 points (laureate in economic sciences in 1999, aged 88, awarded alone), but since he was noch chosen by anyone, these points got lost.

https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/economic-sciences/1999/mundell/facts/

Mundell's death makes Gerardus 't Hooft the last living laureate of the year 1999.

Maybe a pick for all who are interested to join this pool?

Hello, @WEP.
It's my pleasure to greet you.
Can I join at this stage of your pool?
Or... should I wait until the next year?
And... Congratulations for your first hit in Centenarians.
You got it because you deserve it.
So long.
