Deathrace Form Guide #10

Roger Donlon

The 88 year old former army colonel best known as the very first Medal Of Honor recipient during the Vietnam War, is now clearly at the end stage of Parkinson's disease, being frail, barely able to walk (despite assistance) and speak and is mostly home bound. A valuable soldier to pick for any Deathrace side.

Irene Papas

In 2018 it was announced that Irene Papas, one of the most well-known Greek actresses of all time who was considered the epitome of Greek beauty, had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for five years, or since 2013.

The actress suffers a lot when she is unable to recognize friends due to her illness.

She is now 95 and lives away from the public eye.

America's Tough Guy and WWE Super Star 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan is Professional Wrestling Icon - Space Coast Daily

Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Recently spending some time in the HOOOOOOOOOOOspital due to prostate cancer, the large amount of "prayers for Jim" requests from family members suggests this wasn't a stage 1 "caught in time" illness. Beat kidney cancer like it was an undercarder in 1998, but came very close to jobbing out to atrial fibrilation in 2018. Was famously arrested in a kayfabe-destroying incident when he and The Iron Sheik were caught with a shit-tonne of cocaine back in the day. Will he surprise us all by being the first person from that journey to cark it?

Leslie Philips

Ding fucking dong everyone, the annual reminder of the improbable longevity of a louche liver (three wives, a fair bit of target practice along the way) and actor who didn't have to stretch his performance too far to play " lecherous twits with suave chat-up lines " (Wikipedia). Yer man turned 97 in April, he'd have had his friends round but many of them scored points in previous dead pools. How long the doddering thesp with - these days - a fairly pronounced facial growth and visible frailty can go on is the big question. Reports of his demise at any time wouldn't exactly be a surprise. Whether reports of his demise very early in 2022 might prove decisive in this particular pool, on the other hand...well, that depends on whether anyone picks him. The masterlist is currently 39 names long (two teams, one pick in common). I'm not giving too much away if I point out Leslie - Ding Dong - Philips is still awaiting his curtain call.

Art Rupe

Veteran music industry executive now 104 years of age, known for his pioneering 50s work in spreading awareness of black gospel and R&B music though also for dubious royalties practices. With the deaths of Little Richard and Lloyd Price in recent years, has now outlived practically all the pioneering rockers whose careers he helped launch. Could prove a valued Specialty in securing a win for a Deathrace team.

FPO-Doddie-quote-text.9bb694b864d12e4be1

Doddie Weir

MND afflicted Scots rugby legend for whom the diagnosis kicked a previous life into touch and spawned a fundraising bonanza that's seen an OBE, Helen Rollason Award and the instigation of a rugby cup (to be played in perpetuity between Scotland and Wales). Doddy's positivity and profile have kept him in the public eye but this is a cruel condition and yer man is tough, not immortal.  Likely to be brought into play on a significant scale with regard to DDP action. Deathracers may be less inclined. But MND cracks on too, and is something of a twat amongst terminal conditions for its ability to surprise in a bad way.

Gordon Moore

The man behind Moore's Law is now reaching the age where the number of blocked arteries and soft spots on the brain are doubling every two years. Will we see the founder of Intel inside a box in early 2022?

Ronald Blythe

Noted nature writer and columnist for Church Times who has an obitable pedigree. He frequently astounds the select few who continue to peruse his works when they discover he continues to breathe. This post is timely since today is the Blthesters (as nobody calls him) 99th birthday. Whatever festivities mark this occasion it's a safe bet that copious amounts of cocaine and hookers will not be involved.

P. J. Proby

Fuck knows, I've posted this perennial pool teaser in form guides enough times. The hell raising former rock n roll singer turns 83 today, 53 years after his first bankruptcy, 48 years after being arrested for shooting an illegally possessed weapon at his other half (Dean Martin's daughter - so mebbe she had a thing for blokes who drank all day), and almost thirty years after his first heart attack. To be fair, he kicked the pop in the wake of that coronary but his chaotic personal life simply took new turns with ruinous financial management leading to him being resident in the arse end of Manchester, and being tried for benefit fraud involving over £47,000. The acquittal still dragged him into the tabloids again on the back of exposing a private life that'd leave yer average soap opera script editor chucking the story back on the basis that even Corrie regulars wouldn't wear it as credible. I'd mention his various relationships but that'd take another page of the thread. Happy birthday P .J.

Larry Storch

Now-retired US actor best known for his role in F Troop who could well fortify your Deathrace team if he hunkers down in early 2022. His doctors believe he will see 100, and the course of the next year plus few months will determine if their intuitions were correct. Though if he survived being the voice of Cool Cat, he may well survive anything.

Amalia Aguilar

The 97 year old actress/dancer has  worked alongside such legends as Buster Keaton, Carmen Miranda and Bob Hope, and is one of the last living links of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema in the 40s and 50s.  Frail and  wheelchair/housebound  she might be one of the better choices for your team at the startline.

First to go!

Paul Mason

Mega former postie and a frequent favourite wherever low-brow television or lazy newspaper journalists fancy easy content creation. Clearly, complicated content creation would discuss his mental health and exactly where in his childhood it all went so tragically wrong. However, for as long as Mason munches his way to a bodyweight that puts him ahead of all other British contenders the media coverage takes the easy route, presenting the whole thing as a "battle."  He remains photogenic in a car crash kinda way and most of the voyeuristic intrusions are defended as investigative journalism, or similar. On a personal note myself and the Voice of Young Maryport watched an hour of Channel Four following Mason some years ago and still have vivid recall of the moment the "documentary" pointed a camera to the bottom of a wheelie bin wherein lay the removed results of a recent apronectomy on Mason (basically, taking a knife to his sizeable gunt and removing the lot). The moment at which the bin was deftly kicked and the recently detached mass of skin and fat rippled like a jellyfish remains a highlight for lovers of low-brow television. The man-mountain continues to wreak havoc on his vital organs as this post hits t'internet.

David Fuller

Necrophilia means never having to say you're sorry (it's also fairly cost-effective in terms of the ratio of squirts to shell outs), but yer man Fuller took the whole caper to industrial levels accruing around 100 - ahem - girlfriends in this fashion, next to which the handful of murders (his occasional idea of foreplay when confronted by a living female) appear a relatively mundane crime. Honestly, it's a wonder he had time to fit in three marriages, fathering three kids, a career as a hospital electrician and a penchant for cycling (though likely the levels of fitness came in handy when the collision of job/home life and - ermm - his hobby crowded the hours in a the week). Anyway, he's banged up and Plod are keen to parley with him regarding a few disappearances and unexplained deaths that correlate closely with his known whereabouts several years ago. The main questions on this thread relate to whether any of this might incite his fellow prisoners to action and/or whether the prospect of no more free passes to a mortuary may weigh so heavily on his mind that he'll elect to go west in the manner of Fred West.

Ghislaine Maxwell

Jury selection is imminent. her trial proper is due to start on 29 November and according to the Sunday Times (amongst others) the repeated refusals of her bail requests have a lot to do with the authorities incarcerating her feeling she couldn't be safer than in jail. The photographic evidence suggests the journey from socialite to social pariah hasn't done any favours for her health though the investigative journalism surrounding the case (as opposed to the feeding frenzy that's willing the witnesses to drag in Prince Andrew from the start) suggests it's the names of rich and powerful Americans she might divulge that currently put her life in danger. Quite a few people - including one pathologist - think her mate Epstein didn't end his own life!

Akebono Tarō

The (formerly) 233-kilogram sumo wrestler and the 64th Yokozuna of the sport, born Chadwick Haheo Rowan spent two years in kickboxing after his sumo career ended, followed by twelve years in professional wrestling. In professional wrestling he was known for his highly publicized matchup with Bob Sapp in December 2003 with around 54 million viewers. In April 2017 he was hospitalised with a heart condition, later revealed to be acute heart failure and an infection. He spent two weeks in induced coma and has mostly been in hospital since that. In 2019, it was reported that as a result of a heart attack in September 2018 that can't use his legs at all anymore and can't change his clothes, suffers from partial memory loss and is unable to remember his pro-wrestling days.
