Warhol Superstars

Recommended Posts

Andy Warhol (wiki, 1928–1987) was an iconic American artist, film director and producer who broke grounds in his pop art movement, photography and experimental filmmaking. His New York studio, known as The Factory, promoted a group of personalities, known as the Warhol Superstars. They were a collection of models, drag queens, intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities, playwrights and patrons.

The Superstars appeared in Warhol's work, but also accompanied him in his social life. They complimented the famous dictum, misattributed to Warhol, that "in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes". Warhol would film the subjects then simply declare them "superstars".

Thanks for this. I've added Dean, Close, Lancaster, Rosen, Hartley and D'Arbanville as I believe they all qualify.

I don't want the list to get exhaustive. The list of actors by itself who appeared in Warhol's films runs into the hundreds. If we covered all of Andy Warhol's associates, it would run into the thousands.

Rosen, btw, was born in September 1940 as per U.S. public records. She's very prominent on the NY theatre scene so expect a NY Times obit. She also writes a regular column online but hasn't contributed to it for a couple of years now.

As he was the star of Flesh and Trash, was curious to see if there was anything recent from Joe Dallesandro, and there was an interview by Interview published in February.

Paul Morrissey and his health gets a mention:

LABRUCE: Is there anyone from those days you’re in touch with, like Paul Morrissey?

DALLESANDRO: No, I don’t talk to Paul. I don’t think he’s so coherent anymore. His niece takes care of him.

Joe looks great for a man in his mid-70s who's lived a fairly hard life and still smokes.

Holy moly!

Given that Sylvia Miles was 48 here and lived to 94, I'm thinking this pair absorbed all of the longevity and anti-ageing potential from the many prematurely deceased Warhol and Morrissey collaborators.
