drol 11,923 Posted August 6 Is Samson Burke actually still alive? At 95 and with no news in the last 15 years, there's a good possibility he is gone off radar.

Where do you take 15 years ago from... I'm guessing because he last made a public appearance and posted it on his website in 2009? He last posted on his Facebook page in 2016. Coupled with the fact that there are posts on bodybuilding communities wishing him happy birthday and/or stating "Samson is still with us" with 1000s of interactions but nobody contesting the information, I'm inclined to say he's still probably still alive. His own website agrees that he was born as Samuel Burke. However, I can't find him in the U.S. records either. It's possible that Samuel was a middle name at birth and he has chosen to omit his real first name for privacy reasons. As per his own website he admits to being very private and somewhat of a recluse. Sadly, the Canadian birth records are not readily available on Ancestry so we can't get to the bottom of it that way. I would strongly doubt he moved back to Canada. He was resident in the U.S. for the vast majority of his life and was definitely still living there in his 80s. His family have made their life in the States. Wouldn't make much sense for him to return to Canada. I'm pretty certain that he's still resident in the States but that we because we don't know his full name at birth, we can't pull out the records.
Spade_Cooley 9,515 Posted August 6 Skimmed a few YouTube comments sections trying to find leads, very little. This was the best I got: Could be someone with actual knowledge, could just be someone regurgitating what they read online. There's a September 2002 interview with Burke here where he says that he was (at the time) still training people in Florida. That interview also gives a different DOB to the one on Wikipedia (April 6th 1930) and suggests that his birth name was Sammy Berg. Might be bollocks, but it's at least another angle to check. 1

Joe Abbenda and Len Sell are still alive. Enrico Thomas and Elmo Santiago are probably dead, but I can't find confirmation. Mohammed Nasr...very, very unlikely he'd be alive. Edit: Some sources claim Nasr was also called "Tony Boulos". Searching that on google images gives one result which says he would've been 32 in 1960. Or maybe it wasn't the same person, who knows.

Died in 2014 as per forum chat here. Enrico Thomas lived in New York and someone commented on this Facebook post in 2020 to say that he "died a few years ago". Mohamed Nasr likely returned to Egypt, returned to obscurity and was most likely never heard from again. First win was in 1950. He can't be any younger than 25 in his pictures from 1952 Mr. Universe. So on that basis the absolute youngest he could be is mid-90s. I'm going to say most certainly dead too.

Samuel Burke aka Solomon Burke was born April 8th, 1929 in Montreal, Quebec. Aside from bodybuilding, he was also a long-time pro wrestler. https://www.wrestlingdata.com/index.php?befehl=bios&wrestler=8002 He is listed as being still alive on the "List of oldest surviving professional wrestlers" Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_surviving_professional_wrestlers I suspect he is alive. Had he died, a wrestling journalist like Greg Oliver would've written about it.

Gisooo 3,302 Posted August 6 I have discussed this issue with Tracy before. A few comments on a Stooges Facebook fan club suggest he has had dementia for years and lives in a care home somewhere in Canada. Since he lived in Florida, the only record that comes close on his age is a Samuel "Sammy" Berg who lives in Aventura, Florida. Problem is he was born April 1926, not April 1929/30 (so I don't know)
tracy 2,392 Posted August 6 Gisooo posted about it as I was typing, but yeah, I'm fairly sure this is him. This 2006 article mentions Samson Burke was then living in Aventura, and said Burke's DOB is 4/8/1926 per MyLife. Given the bodybuilder's DOB is always given as 4/8/1929 or 4/8/1930, there's enough corroborating evidence that suggests it is him and his official DOB was never that accurate, particularly given there is no other convincing alternative. I did (as said above) read on a Stooges FB group that he someone had contacted him in the late 2010s and learned he was in a care home, although I can't seem to find it again so take it with a grain of salt. (ETA: Forgot that 2006 article says "Burke, 80..." So, yeah, it's definitely him.) 2

People wanted to know Samson Burke's date of birth. They were unnecessarily going through birth record sites. I recognized the name as that of a pro wrestler. I provided his date of birth and name at birth, answering both of those questions. That source also had no date of death. It's a very good one for having up-to-date wrestling information, as can be shown by the information on its home page. https://www.wrestlingdata.com/ I also provided the name of a wrestling writer who, if you'd bothered to find anything out about, would know is an old school, investigative journalist in the wrestling industry. I've cited his articles more than once for obits. And while Wikipedia is no guarantee for accurate information, there are enough people who take an interest in lists of "World's oldest" - including plenty who post in the Deathlist Forums - that a public death notice for Mr. Burke would've surely been incorporated into that Wikipedia page's info. I don't know what you're missing from the info I posted.
