I laughed at their suggestion that Kare Willoch, Prime Minister of Norway (81–86), wouldn't receive a QO. He died back on 6 December and more than 2 months on, no obit in sight.

No obit for Willoch? What a Kare on!

(Yes a repeat gag.)

Still, I was tempted to straight up retire from the DDP end of last year, and this recurring modern thing where memes get obits across the board but European statesmen and British TV actors are snubbed entirely is most of the reason why. I am increasingly out of touch.

Lars Hogh immediately got the Sun Uk obit. But nothing else. The year-end roundup is more for the local UK news, premier league players of the 50s and 60s, not for the international ones. Still, I guess it's not a 0% for a Hellström QO yet.

Possible Hellstrom route to a QO if Sweden qualify for the World Cup (being held in November/December this year, remember). They're in the playoffs but, unfortunately for those who picked him, not in a group with Scotland or Wales. So they'll have to make the final 32 for any chance of his death being mentioned in a pre-tournament profile piece.

Although with a badly managed Poland, Russia who aren't amazing, and the Czechs, they are probably the favourites in their section. Better spot to be in than Turkey at least.

Btw, Hellstrom was goalie in the famous Brazil/Sweden 78 match, so all we need is The Guardian to do a "shocking World Cup moments" article, bring up Zico's non-goal, and mention that keeper Hellstrom "died earlier this year". *Straws, clutching*

Plenty of time yet for Hellstrom. Times/Guardian/Telegraph are still clearing a backlog of obits from the end of 2021 for acting, music and sporting personalities it would seem.

Whilst I'm on that subject though... I owe @The Old Crem a rare apology. I laughed at their suggestion that Kare Willoch, Prime Minister of Norway (81–86), wouldn't receive a QO. He died back on 6 December and more than 2 months on, no obit in sight.

Like many Scandinavian leaders, just too boring.

It can be unpredictable as to who o it’s.

Hellstrom doesn’t really feel a broadsheet Obit type of person to me. I mean he could get one but I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t.

Smart Beta in a good spot right now with two major gambles paying off by mid February. Not unbeatable though, especially as names like Pele can easily be counters.

Just the other day I was assessing the teams near the top early and this was pretty much the nightmare scenario.  Genuinely surprised a QO came thru, given her lack of a wiki page and any English language press coverage (outside of a specialist magazine) of her illness.

Well, the biggest deficit recovery from the top spot to win the DDP, afaik, is Spade's 28 points comeback in 2013. Those of us in 5th place are 26 points from the top already...

Groundbreaking trans [anything] + relatively young age + the fact Veneno is on HBO Max worldwide + Latin Americans being a great source of clicks meant I was always confident she'd come through. If she was, say, German I'd have been more reticent.

Thanks for the reminder of how bloody Andrew Millwall denied me the win...

Hah, yes, sorry,  undone by a jammy, jammy hit there.

In terms of jammy Spade hits, could be worse - @Death Impends used to bemoan for years that, had she jokered any of 11 successful picks on her team in 2015, she'd have won. They went for Martin Crowe who lived, and lost the DDP by...4 points. To a Christmas Day bonus.  Still, they won in 2019 (and you won in 2010!).

The closest I ever came to anything like this was in 2016 when I didn't pick Kris Travis (to be nice,  a foolish move) and Peter Esterhazy (forgot about him) and then said in the DL chat that 18 points were hardly going to make a difference for a team that's never finished in the top 30. I finished 16 points off the top! The fates will play silly buggers with you...

Clearly you are in the right and I'm wrong but the "saying goodbye to fans", "months to live" news being limited, in the English speaking world at least, to a specialist magazine certainly had me thinking her chance to obit was very limited.

5th place appears to be 20 points back, actually... as that's where I currently stand.  Any path I have to a repeat is dependent on Tim Bilton, Sacheen Littlefeather, Clare Marx, Linda Nolan, and Tom Smith now.  Chances are slim.

You may have worked this out but in February it is possible for all your picks to die - this will be more picks than the teams ahead of you so if the team ahead of you has a higher maximum score than your maximum score then you could say you can’t win but otherwise surely it’s just worthless posturing.

i doubt the team you picked in December is looking significantly healthier in mid Feb so they could still all die - they won’t but this ‘route to victory’ stuff all feels a bit premature.

(says the team in 41st place 50 points behind :D)

Yes, GUN, that's the spirit, in my opinion.

If all your picks die, you win. And February is far too soon to give up in that (unless you had an "in critical condition in Dec 31st case).

No one has got more than 15 since Bert in 2017. imo any team that gets 16 or more will win the DDP no matter when those hits are. Spade's record (yeah that guy again) of 17 even had room for a LOTL name in the other 3...

DDT 2011 was the only real "it's over in the first two months" season. In the years since the early leader sometimes wins it all (IIRC Bert was on top of the scoreboard in Jan or Feb the year he won) but only after a long fight.

QUAILFYING OBITS

Just a quick question about Qualifying obits folks.

Does this BBC page count as QOs for ...

  • Bamber Gascoigne
  • Norma Waterson
  • Claire Tomlinson
  • Thich Nhat Hanh

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00146j2

The DDP rules states "(Last Word, the death must be written down)"

Now the names of the 4 people mentioned IS written down, and the programme IS an obituary programme, but it is NOT written that they HAVE DIED.

In my view this page SHOULD count but I would just like some clarification from the powers-that-be please.

Thanks.

Wrong page for the correct source. Each Last Word programme produces a page like this:

BBC Radio 4 - Last Word, Bamber Gascoigne (pictured), Norma Waterson, Claire Tomlinson, Thich Nhat Hanh

With birth dates, death dates, and who they were. As Last Word is basically a BBC news programme (on the radio) and this is the written source, it counts.

Whereas the Sounds page is the shorthand link for downloading to a mobile etc.

EDIT - I am not a power that be anymore (thank feck) but as I pushed for Last Word being included, that was my reasoning.
