HARES DEATH POOL 2022

Recommended Posts

There was a small flurry of important hits to end November, and so the tension mounts as we enter the home straight of this pool. The following deaths were noted- let me know if I've missed any.

18th November: Ned Rorem

26th November: Doddie Weir

27th November: Clare Marx

30th November: Jiang Zemin

Doddie Weir was a hit for 3 of the chasing pack, with @Joey Russmoving up into 6th, @TQR into 8th, and a big-scoring joker hit moving @Pedro67 into 9th. It is likely that they have all left it too late to mount a serious challenge, but stranger things have happened!

Jiang Zemin death, after a hoax earlier in the month, was a hit for 7 players, but importantly for only one of the leaders. That was me of course;). I said in the last update that by the end of the month, I would be only 1 hit behind the leader, and Zemin died on the 30th, so was it enough ......

Yes :D:D

and No :angry::angry:

Remarkably, we now have a tie at the top of the leaderboard! @Death Impends and I are locked together on 2758 points as December begins. There has never been a tie in this competition (unsurprisingly given the scoring system) - could this be the year? Can one of us strike a decisive blow? Can @Wormfarmerfind another hit to regain the lead? Can one of the chasers string 2 or 3 hits together to sneak it at the death?

Stay tuned - December could be interesting!!

Julia Reichert was my joker IIRC.

Hopefully, it gets me into the listed scores at least.

Also DDP LOTM as I picked her on my b team back in 2019

Let's tie up the loose ends of the late November hits before the real December action begins. The following deaths have been noted:

21st November: Marijane Meaker

28th November: Cliff Emmich

1st December: Julie Reichert

The only real difference that makes to the scoreboard is that Julie Reichert's death does indeed fulfil @gcreptile's deep-held wish to be part of the top-10, lifting them up into 8th. Too little, too late? Probably, but you never can tell.

Reichert's demise also lifts @DeathByArsenic out of the bottom 3, dropping @BabyBluedown into the unwanted spot,

Top 10 is as follows. Full leaderboard is on page 1.

An Fear Beag (2758 points) 12 hits

[Bill Turnbull*, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jiang Zemin, Kane Tanaka, Leslie Phillips, Michael O’Connor, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mollie Walker, Olivia Newton-John, Tom Smith, Tom Weiskopf, Vicky Phelan]

Death Impends (2758 points) 15 hits

[Antonio Inoki, Art Rupe, Bill Pitman, Carleton Carpenter, Charley Trippi, George Perez, Joe Krush, Kane Tanaka, Larry Storch*, Leslie Phillips, Marsha Hunt, Monty Norman, Nehemiah Persoff, Robert Clary]

Wormfarmer (2656 points) 15 hits

[Art Rupe, Boris Pahor, Charley Trippi, Everett Lee, Francis Jackson, Gail Halvorsen, Gary Burgess, Guy Lafleur, James Lovelock, Leslie Phillips*, Luis Echeverria, Marsha Hunt, Queen Elizabeth II, Susie Steiner, Tom Weiskopf]

Looks like I was the only one to pick Jet Black.

Awaiting an obit, but I had Harry Yee here. Assuming he at least gets local Hawaiian press, I believe that means whoever wins this year will do so with a record points total?

And so, as the racers turn into the home straight, let's take a look at the field. December has been a quiet month for this pool, with only 4 hits noted since the last update.

December 6th: Jet Black

December 7th: Harry Yee

December 11th: Abigail K.K. Kawānanakoa

December 23rd: Kaikala Satyanarayana

I will be doing a thorough trawl through the names once the game is over, but you can help me out a little by checking your own teams and letting ,me know if I've missed anyone.

The hits may have been small in number, but they (well one of them!) were massive in importance. Harry Yee's death gave the top of the leaderboard a shake, and restored @Death Impendsto her familiar position at the top, with a record score for this pool of 3098 points. The top 5 is as follows:

Death Impends (3098 points) 16 hits

[Antonio Inoki, Art Rupe, Bill Pitman, Carleton Carpenter, Charley Trippi, George Perez, Harry Yee, Joe Krush, Kane Tanaka, Larry Storch*, Leslie Phillips, Marsha Hunt, Monty Norman, Nehemiah Persoff, Robert Clary]

An Fear Beag (2758 points) 12 hits

[Bill Turnbull*, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jiang Zemin, Kane Tanaka, Leslie Phillips, Michael O’Connor, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mollie Walker, Olivia Newton-John, Tom Smith, Tom Weiskopf, Vicky Phelan]

Wormfarmer (2656 points) 15 hits

[Art Rupe, Boris Pahor, Charley Trippi, Everett Lee, Francis Jackson, Gail Halvorsen, Gary Burgess, Guy Lafleur, James Lovelock, Leslie Phillips*, Luis Echeverria, Marsha Hunt, Queen Elizabeth II, Susie Steiner, Tom Weiskopf]

ZZZ - Boring Predictable Team (2327 points) 13 hits

[Bill Turnbull, Gary Burgess, George Perez, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jerry Lee Lewis, Kane Tanaka, Leslie Phillips, Mikhail Gorbachev, Olivia Newton-John, Queen Elizabeth II, Susie Steiner, Tom Parker, Tom Smith]

MSC (2109 points) 8 hits

[Angela Lansbury, David Butler, James Lovelock, Jill Knight, Leslie Phillips, Nehemiah Persoff, Peter Tobin*, Queen Elizabeth II]

Will it be enough, however? This game is known for its late drama - with 5 days to go, could there be one last twist in the tail? Any of the following names would give me a late hit, and the lead:

Agnes Kelati

George Alagiah

Graham Bailey

James Whale

Jimmy Carter

Linda Nolan

Marianne Faithfull

Mary Quant

Nigel Lawson

Shannon Doherty

Thomas J FItzpatrick

@Wormfarmer is not completely out of it at this stage, although their hopes are fading. The December 31st Bonus would be enough to give them the most dramatic of victories, if any of the following were to go on the last day:

Agnes Kelati

Al Jaffee

Emperor Akihito

Frank Field

James Whale

June Spencer

Khalida Zia

Pope Benedict XVI

Tony Bennett

Walter Mirisch

Everyone that matters at this stage. The only thing his death would achieve is to make me the second highest scorer ever in this game, but without me actually winning it

Surely Kelati or Whale wouldn't give Wormfarmer the win, as you've also got them?

You are, of course, correct.
I completely overlooked the fact that the extra bonus points that Wormfarmer would get to put them ahead of DI would also be given to me as well

The news is that Pope Benny may be on his last legs. Can he hold out until Saturday to give Wormfarmer a spectacular come from behind victory?

No - 11 players picked Benny, but no Joker among them.

Pele will be the highest scoring pick in the history of this pool, for anyone who jokered him.

But more importantly, assuming that he did indeed die today, the Betty Bonus will give @Wormfarmerthe edge they need on the very last day.

250 point bonus if one of your "celebrities" dies on 31st December in that game year (i.e a 31st death will score 614 points in a normal year or 615 points in a leap year rather than the 364 or 365 points it would normally accrue)

We have had very late drama in this pool - but not the type of drama I had flagged yesterday morning.

Despite my hint that @Death Impendshad been caught by @Wormfarmer on the finishing line, it turns out that Wormfarmer had run a lap short - he hadn't actually picked Pele!

On my masterlist, I read WM as Wormfarmer, whereas it was actually Wannamaker. As a result, Wormfarmer's pick of Pope Benedict was enough to overtake me, but not enough to sneak a late lead.

Equally dramatically, Death Impends was trampled over on the finishing line by the massed herd that was the crowd-sourced ZZZ - Boring Predictable team, who had both Pele as a Joker,  and Pope Benedict's Bonus.

The last hits noted this year are:

November 19th: Hedi Fried

December 23rd: Kaikala Satyanarayana

December 29th: Pele

December 31st: Pope Benedict XV1

The top 5 now current stands as:

ZZZ - Boring Predictable Team (3665 points) 15 hits

[Bill Turnbull, Gary Burgess, George Perez, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jerry Lee Lewis, Kane Tanaka, Leslie Phillips, Mikhail Gorbachev, Olivia Newton-John, Pele*, Pope Benedict, Queen Elizabeth II, Susie Steiner, Tom Parker, Tom Smith]

Death Impends (3460 points) 17 hits

[Antonio Inoki, Art Rupe, Bill Pitman, Carleton Carpenter, Charley Trippi, George Perez, Harry Yee, Joe Krush, Kane Tanaka, Larry Storch*, Leslie Phillips, Marsha Hunt, Monty Norman, Nehemiah Persoff, Pele, Robert Clary]

Wormfarmer (3270 points) 16 hits

[Art Rupe, Boris Pahor, Charley Trippi, Everett Lee, Francis Jackson, Gail Halvorsen, Gary Burgess, Guy Lafleur, James Lovelock, Leslie Phillips*, Luis Echeverria, Marsha Hunt, Pope Benedict Queen Elizabeth II, Susie Steiner, Tom Weiskopf]

An Fear Beag (3120points) 13 hits

[Bill Turnbull*, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jiang Zemin, Kane Tanaka, Leslie Phillips, Michael O’Connor, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mollie Walker, Olivia Newton-John, Pele, Tom Smith, Tom Weiskopf, Vicky Phelan]

Joey Russ (2911 points) 13 hits

[Doddie Weir, George Perez*, James Lovelock, Jana Bennett, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jerry Lee Lewis, Kane Tanaka, Mikhail Gorbachev, Olivia Newton-John, Pele, Pope Benedict, Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia, Tom Parker]

According to the rules of the game, players have until 7th January to discover any hits that are reported late. Unless any major drama happens in the next week, I will be declaring Death Impends as the official winner of yet another pool, with all of you declared as the honorary winners, as part of the ZZZ team.
