Hartlepool Deadlypool 2022

Recommended Posts

I'll update once Susie Steiner gets something. Looks to be her, Trintignant and Bingham as mentioned above, and Deborah James.

Two heavyweights and three uniques this past month.

Norn Iron manager Billy Bingham worked miracles for his team and now he applies a last touch of magic to Pedro67's team for 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus).

Jean-Louis Trintignant's declining deadpool popularity experienced a rebound this year, going from a unique pick last HPDP up to 7 teams this year. Said beneficiaries are

Doulton with 50 points and her first points of the year.

MariNisia 25.

DeathByArsenic and John Key 15.

Annami 10.

And 25 sub points for Banana and maryportfuncity.

Old age has taken a toll on Paula Stafford, the fashion designer who brought the bikini Down Under. CalebH attains his first hit of the year for 42 (30 base + 12 bonus).

Cancer activist Deborah James was unique here for Kenny. I'm on record in her DDP obit as describing her as "FFBI-transcending" so I won't impose a penalty here. So the end total for Kenny is 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus).

Lastly comes the update's most popular pick, crime novelist Susie Steiner. The glio-addled wordsmith was selected by 11 teams:

Book scores 45 points.

CaptainChorizo and drol 35.

Banana, maryportfuncity, and Perhaps 30.

Annami and theoldlady 25.

msc and Toast 15.

and 25 sub points for gcreptile.

The latest scoreboard sees Book remain in control at the halfway point, even extending his lead slightly thanks to benefiting the most from Steiner. Banana sneaks past Reptile into 2nd, and still has potential to overcome Book if his own remaining differentials (Reichert and Phelan) die while none of Book's do so. However another Book differential hit probably shuts out Banana. Reptile however has multiple differentials on hand, including a unique serial killer, and much more upward potential.

Bernard Cribbins died and is mid-placed for me in this game.

Off the zero and scoring at least.

It looks like James Caan, Larry Storch, John Gwynne, Francisco Morales Bermudez, and Bernard Cribbins for the rest of July? Will update shortly.

Early-mid July had a bit of a celeb death burst, and a few of them are relevant here. First up is James Caan, a unique for CalebH. The Jewish Cowboy riding off into the sunset delivers him 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus).

Aaaaa-aaahh, Larry Storch is Agarn but not forgotten. A troop of two noted his Hollywood Squares appearances - Funeralopolis and markb4 both gain 56 points (35 base + 21 bonus).

Coming up next is John Gwynne. The darts commentator was unique for drol and lands him 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus).

A few dubious world leaders died in July but only Peruvian dictator Francisco Morales Bermudez was a pick here. Torva Messor had him on the subs bench and thus no bonuses, nevertheless it still is a 25-point coup for her.

And a complete 180 from a good riddance to a dictator to much-mourned icon. Bernard Cribbins proved valuable for those willing to pick him, with his extensive CV including Squares and panto. He's the first hit for both selectors - YoungWillz stylishly gains 77 points (35 base + 42 bonus) and Joey Russ a much lower 22 (10 base + 12 bonus). Joey only had 8 picks this year because he limits himself to debutants from the outgoing DeathList. Doesn't look like he'll struggle to fill up a team next year!

The July scoreboard is below. markb4 ekes into the top 10, and drol glides to 4th albeit still a gap away from the leading pack. The Cribbins hit leaves just five teams in the hole in the ground one calls nil points.

I'll update soon. Looks like Claes Oldenburg (July hit that slipped past me), Olivia Newton-John, Tom Weiskopf, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Bill Turnbull for the August hits.

Pop art sculptor Claes Oldenburg, he of the giant ordinary objects, died back in July, but I had only belatedly realized he was a HPDP selection a day ago. Doulton alone sinks her claws in Claes, and being jotted up with a towering pencil is the points total of 42 (30 base + 12 bonus).

Destiny has arrived for pop darling Olivia Newton-John, who brings the dreams of HPDP points alive for three participants. Some names you struggle to come up with one gag for, others can generate dozens. The trio greasing up their totals are as follows: 25 points for Pedro67, 10 for The Unknown Man, and 25 sub points for YoungWillz.

A quartet of teams get into the swing of things with Tom Weiskopf, with Valhalla One hitting the highest with 45 points. The other three were all outside the green and consigned Weiskopf to their subs bench - Funeralopolis, msc, and theoldlady all hit their first sub for 25 points.

Two teams tear down Soviet statesman Mikhail Gorbachev. Only Thatcher had him on his main team for 21 points (15 base + 6 bonus). After all your efforts together to thaw the Cold War, that's how you repay him, Thatch? CalebH meanwhile had him as a sub hit for 25 points.

Lastly, BBC Breakfast's Bill Turnbull caps off August. He gives 25 points to John Key, 20 to MariNisia, and 5 to The Old Crem.

The August scoreboard is below, with slight rises for msc and Pedro up the top 10.

I'll update soon. Just Marsha Hunt, the Queen, and Joyce Reynolds this past month I think?

A rare all-women batch for this past month of HPDPing. Only markb4 had Marsha Hunt on his (black)list to the score of 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus).

This almost slipped through the cracks, but it turns out Queen Elizabeth II died a month back. I was able to find a snippet mentioning her death in a Corriere della Sera article, so the points are safe. A trio of teams take reign: 40 points for Famous6Eva, 25 for Pedro67, and a second sub hit worth 50 points for DevonDeathTrip.

Another second sub is marked in this update with maryportfuncity seeing 50 points from classicist Joyce Reynolds going from epigraphs to epitaphs.

The death of Native American activist and Brando stand-in Sacheen Littlefeather sees two birds of a feather flock together: 40 points for Salmon Mousse and 30 for John Key.

Lastly, points on the way for An Fear Beag who mines a unique hit with Loretta Lynn. The unique Squares pick is worth 33 points in all (15 base + 18 bonus).

The latest scoreboard sees the top three unchanged but a growing bottleneck beneath with Salmon Mousse and maryportfuncity joining in:

Just Phil Read, Angela Lansbury, and Jerry Lee Lewis since the last update it seems? Will update momentarily.

The smallest death of this trio may well be the most important to the competition. Motorcyclist Phil Read was a unique for gcreptile in these crucial final laps of the game, worth 42 points (30 base + 12 bonus). Is there more fuel in his tank as he vrooms behind Book?

As I was entering the teams for this year, it surprised me that Angela Lansbury was a first-timer to the HPDP (at least under my watch), and now she pens a unique panto hit for Bibliogryphon. The points he wrote are 18 (10 base + 8 bonus).

Last up is a Million Dollar Quartet benefiting from the death of rock wildman Jerry Lee Lewis. Fired up are theoldlady and YoungWillz with 30 points, chilean way with 20 points, and CaptainChorizo keying in his first sub for 25 points.

The scoreboard for a small update may nevertheless be a crucial one, as the Phil Read unique for gcreptile shoots him into striking distance of overtaking Book. With Vicky Phelan in precarious health and Nigel Starmer-Smith another who could go anytime, it's certainly possible for Reptile to take the lead, but under two months left for it to happen...

Just hauling this to the top anticipating the double whammy of Phelan and Marx making my performance look a little more respectable.

Oh aye, and Pele (one of my four survivors) ain't so well!

Gooseberry Crumble had Bill Treacher in pole position on his team. Usually this would bode poorly for a November hit after gradual depreciation, but not in this case as this is his first main team hit for 70 points (50 base + 20 bonus).

A ding-donging immortal who participated in both pantos and Celebrity Squares was always going to be a popular lad hereabouts. A hearty 11 teams united for Leslie Phillips:

six feet blunder gets 50 + 60 = 110 points.

Dying Probably and Hell 45 + 54 = 99. This hit puts Dying Probably on the board.

CaptainChorizo 40 + 48 = 88.

An Fear Beag and Thatcher 35 + 42 = 77.

Great Uncle Bulgaria and YoungWillz 25 + 30 = 55.

Toast 20 + 24 = 44.

chilean was 10 + 12 = 22.

and Exu 5 + 6 = 11.

Days of Our Lives actor John Aniston was a unique hit for YorkshireBanker worth 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus).

CervicalCheck scandal activist Vicky Phelan another heavyweight for the month. I feel that given she was the face and primary campaigner of a scandal that toppled the HSE director, that it elevates her to a similar level to Deborah James and thus not subject to a FFBI penalty. So it is the full slate of points for the following teams: 40 for Banana, 35 for An Fear Beag and maryportfuncity, 30 for gcreptile, and 25 for Perhaps.

Doulton stood alone in having Hogan's Heroes alum Robert Clary, leaving him bunkered up on the subs bench for 25 points.

Doulton followed up shortly thereafter with another hit. Contemporary classical composer Ned Rorem was never picked in the DDP, he died too late for the Scavenger Hunt, but the timing was just right for the HPDP for a total of 63 points (45 base + 18 bonus).

Another unique comes, this one goes Exu's way in the shape of Doddie Weir. The ALS-stricken rugby player locks down 21 points (15 base + 6 bonus).

And continuing the unique train a day later is surgeon Clare Marx. maryportfuncity had his scalpel handy and stitches up an additional 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus) to his tally.

And yet another unique to round off November. Toadlike Chinese leader Jiang Zemin came with human rights oppression that was par the course and so it is 22 points (10 base + 12 bonus) for Dying Probably.

Then one December hit that could also be crucial. Documentarian Julia Reichert won an Oscar in 2020, and could well deliver another trophy for one of the two players who selected her. gcreptile gains 35 points, and Banana 30.

So after quite the turbulent month, here is the latest scoreboard. After Book led for the vast majority of the year, he now falls to third, and gcreptile takes the lead!

Obviously Reptile can win if nothing happens for the rest of the year, but with Pele seemingly teetering and not on his team, he might want to hope for one of his three survivors - Luis Garavito, Gianluca Vialli, or Nigel Starmer-Smith - to feel more secure.

Banana has a very narrow, but certainly plausible, route to win - Pele, and nothing else happening. His only other survivor is Frank Field, but he would gain fewer points (10) than Book (45). Thus Field, or any other Reptile/Book hit, would make it mathematically impossible for Banana.

Book can claw back the lead with Natalie Kwadrans, Frank Field, or Joe Kinnear. As it stands David Graham would see him lag by a fraction of a point, but if Pele does die then Graham would also give him the lead.

CaptainChorizo (best route is probably Larry Pressler + Parnelli Jones) and maryportfuncity (best route is probably Bob Barker + Rob Burrow) have ways to take the lead but are a bit more underdog. And for all we know one of the midtable teams has a jackpot lurking in the shadows.

All poised to be a gripping final month here at the HPDP...

Aye and a few of us were packing Pele in the picks

For a while it was looking like there'd be nothing else to say for this month in the HPDP, after Julia Reichert.

Then those last three days happened.

But first, a quick realization that I forgot to include a bonus .19 points for Bill Treacher's COVID death. That has been remedied.

Now onto the December hits.

The second-most-popular pick of the 2022 HPDP was the epicenter of the craziness. None other than Pele. 18 teams score their goal, in some cases quite pivotal, in those waning hours of the year:

GuyFromFuture scores 50 points.

Salmon Mousse, six feet blunder, Valhalla One 40.

drol, Funeralopolis, maryportfuncity, The Old Crem, Torva Messor, YorkshireBanker 35.

Exu, Thatcher, The Unknown Man, and theoldlady 30.

Pedro67 25.

MariNisia 20.

and most crucially a second sub hit for Banana and Book for 50 points.

Only Bibliogryphon had the 20/20 vision to pick Barbara Walters. He now has 21 points (15 basic + 6 bonus) in his View.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was a major substitution headache for the 2023 edition of the HPDP. But for 2022 he was fairly straightforward. The man of the cloth found his way onto 5 teams: 30 points for Dying Probably and YoungWillz, 15 points for chilean way and DevonDeathTrip, and 25 sub points for BabyBlue.

And with that is the penultimate scoreboard in what has proven to be a very tantalizing finale. A very narrow bottleneck at the top sees Banana attain a slender lead, and short of a belated unveiling of a December 31 death, victory is poised to be his. A week to go before the interesting team/13th place bonuses are awarded, and the 2022 edition is wrapped up...
