Jean-Luc Godard

Everything in cinema changed after Breathless, and I do mean EVERYTHING. Every single frame of modern cinema was inspired more or less by Godard et companie.

Au revoir.

Good pick by the Cmme. A few rumours of ill health last year iirc but nothing solid.

Reported that he died through assisted suicide.

From the article: "He was not sick, he was simply exhausted. So he had made the decision to end it. It was his decision and it was important for him that it be known".

He also decided not to have a funeral. He played his last trick on us before leaving.  A genius even in death.

This makes him the second DL hit by non-natural causes, following John Forbes Nash's death in a traffic collision in 2015.

Meaning Godard is also the first DL candidate to commit suicide. And as he wasn’t even sick at the time of his death, at least I cannot take any blame for missing the world’s most influential film director on my list. Potentially the most controversial DL hit ever, but of course, every hit counts.

There does seem to be some conflicting reporting on this point. Godard's lawyer has said that he died after "multiple incapacitating illnesses": https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/sep/13/jean-luc-godard-chose-to-end-life-through-assisted-dying-lawyer-confirms

I guess the two aren't mutually exclusive. Perhaps he wasn't "actively" sick at the time he chose to die, but was left very frail after previous health problems, and didn't want to go on with a very reduced quality of life.

He made some great 'artistic' porn.

Just saying, like.

A more significant death than Queen Elizabeth, imo.

How people are taking this post seriously is beyond me

Michael Haneke is my clear favourite for the title.

Alejandro Jodorowsky or Juan Mariné

Juan Mariné is director of photography and a film restorer. He is not a film director.

It’s Werner Herzog for me, no doubt.
