Your DDP Salvage Lot 2022

Alright, time to post a list of regrets that you’ll probably have throughout the year. Already mentioned that missing Phelan was a doh moment, and I did decide to punt that Nightbride will see 2023 rather than die this year (probably will backfire looking at teams). Will reveal the rest later…

I decided to axe any defensive picks yesterday, aided by Brufen. So James Whale, Rob Burrow, Gianluca Vialli and George Alagiah all bit the dust.

Otherwise...

Michelle Fazzari - Stage IV cancer but I wasn't sure of the obit chances and had already taken a few gambles.

Chris Croucher - If a Downton Abbey producer really did have lung cancer, we might have heard more about it than in his getting off jail news?

Deborah James - Reptile had me tempted with his "6 months ahead of Phelan" timeline but James updates drive me crazy. One minute, she's near the end, next week, she's back bouncing back to normal again.

Justin Yerbury - Think hes a goner this year but again QO worries.

Barry DuBois - DItto but just no space.

Natty Wailer - Not as famous as I had originally thought.

Tony Parkes/Sir Jamie McGrigor - Too good picks suggested by sound forum names that I just lacked room to fit in.

Jan Englert/Jason DiTuillio/Radovan Radakovic -Probably wont obit.

Nothing really exciting this year from me.

A boo boo I made was to have subs I put no thought into whatsoever. Two people died and now my team has Bill Oddie and the Queen in it. Rather than people who are about to die. Like Pélé.

Just failed to make Hits of 36 Years Ago: Stevie Wonder; Terry Griffiths (yes the snooker player!); Kurtis Blow. Also considered - Jon Bon Jovi; Nicko McBrain and Diana Ross.

Just failed to make Comedy Cremations: Jamie Farr; Marion Ross. Also considered - Lynda Baron; Maria Charles (is she even still alive?) and Wanda Ventham.

Just failed to make 12 Lords, 8 Ladies: Lords - Pele (why was he sub #3?), Ladies - Winnie Ewing; Joan Plowright; Ethel Kennedy. Also considered - Harrison Birtwhistle; David Rudkin; Donna Martell and Sarah Kennedy.

Ron Gibbs: Father of Brandon on 90 Day Fiance. It was mentioned during the end-of-season tell all that Brandon wanted to move closer to him as he had "rapidly declining health". However, this has all the hallmarks of trying to be too clever with a pick so I dropped him.

Sergey Galitsky: Russian billionaire, in the process (maybe already had idk) of selling his football team Krasnodar due to health issues. Seemed to suggest it was some form of rapidly advancing cancer but if anyone can keep cancer from the door for 12 months, it's a Russian with access to near-unlimited funds.

Esther Lee: Is "Serena Williams' physiotherapist" a celebrity? Regardless, one of the many people I listened to interviews with (see also your man from the Psychedelic Furs and Timothy Keller) suggesting they expect to see 2023.

Charlie Bird: "Doesn't expect to see next Christmas" but Irish journalists don't strike me as the most reliable QO path.

She was another already ruled as a no by the committee fwiw.

Done that before. One year Mirror journo Sue Carroll died after my team went in, so was replaced by my first random sub - 102 year old Luise Rainer.

Who didn't even die that year.

Alrighty, besides Phelan and Nightbride here’s my other list of probable regrets:

Don West - cancer returned pretty quickly, just was unsure enough if this was gonna be a case where it is quick or is something that could last multiple recurrences in the end

Milos Zeman - earlier this month he seemed poised to take Arap Moi/Menem mantle, but after thinking about it his health was nowhere near as dire as those previous

Rob Burrow - something seems off about him. Not in a frauding sense, but his case just confuses me all around

Francoise Hardy - fascinating name, the lack of knowing what illness she has ultimately lead me to sidelining her

Tim Keller - still not entirely sure on religious QO chances, my guess is more likely to not obit than obit

Chris Croucher/Joe Exotic - classic case of frauding their extent of illnesses imo

Gianluca Vialli - saw his cancer return after I feel that I was pretty satisfied with how my team turned out. Plus even with its return the cancer does seem slightly stable.
Natty Wailer - not really a member of the Wailers and residing in Ireland? Yeah, that’s not really a good combination for getting a QO. Reminds me of Fergie Fredriksson

Dwight Watson - would’ve been a Yahoo obit gamble but already had one with NBA ref Tony Brown, don’t need another one

Alyson Williams - another one that came in too late. Also had Bobby Caldwell on my team and didnt need more than one hospitalized musician on my team.
Antonio Inoki - ditto minus the music part

Tom Weiskopf - similar to Phelan never looked too deep into him. Probably another regret

Rob Bolland - no room really

Yeah, as you might tell not too in-depth research this time…

Also, Jake the Snake was the closest I came to picking someone, that I didn't pick in the end. He was the only still-living name on my end-of-November draft that didn't make the final cut. That he's co-hosting a podcast makes me think he has more fuel in the tank than thought a few months back. COVID might make that a d'oh though.

Yeah, as you might tell not too in-depth research this time…

Another person possibly in the same category is Graham Spanier, who I considered for a short while. Feels too similar to that other dude in the Jerry Sandusky case who you picked once and who's still alive today.

Oh, Tim Curley. Yeah, he’s such a bastard

Alright, where to start:

Jake The Snake - couldn't get myself to pick him again. Seems somewhat on the upswing? That is, until the COVID news came.

Steve Gleason / Rob Burrow / Ady Barkan: Seemed too slow for me. I got tired of picking Barkan.

James Whale: Well, he's no Rush Limbaugh. Hard too see any decline at all. The cancer must not be too aggressive - kidney cancer that has spread? But probably undiscovered for long, so the growth not that big.

Tom Parker / Tom Smith: I want a piece of more recent bad news before picking them again. I didn't want to pick defensively.

Antonio Inoki: Dropped from B-team. Could still be dead tomorrow, or in 5 years?

Tim Wilson (professor / politician / Circle guy): Was on my list for a while. But his Instagram seems positive. He looks better than those previous hospital pics.

Cornelius Price: last piece of news was that he could be in a coma for years. So the "gravely ill" description is a bit misleading, potentially.

Milos Zeman / Khaleda Zia: No, not going with them, no matter how many times they're hospitalised.

Robert Durst: Too evil to be trusted.

Mustafa Kayirici: Well, he's been doing the "I'm soon dead" thing for two years. Might be true eventually, but all in all, I didn't feel comfortable with the pick and the person. And the kind of marginal notability I mostly want to avoid.

Dropped from last year:

Tom Parker - only considered re-rostering him as a block (and he was my first SUB name for that reason).  Broke my heart last year and just looks way too healthy.  This decision probably won't age well.

Peter Angelos - was my lone unique pick last year but now his name's been exposed and, at his age, he's only of any use as a unique

Didn't have space:

Tim Keller - his age only makes him worth 7 so he'd have to Drop 40 to be worthwhile, which he won't do.  Will go this year, though.

Doddie Weir - had him on my roster until the last day, when I replaced him with Durst.  Really think he's going this year, and he's worth very good points, but just can't complete trust ALS picks, and I already had Burrow.  Durst was a safe alternative.

Johnny Ruffo - young, worth a lot of points, probably a better 2022 pick than Parker, but just seemed to big a gamble

Deemed to have no chance to obit:

Isabel Torres - dying, and soon, but her illness only seems to be getting mention in specialist papers and she doesn't even have a wiki page

Pau Riba Romeva - stage 4 pancan but no chance of a English obit

Abdul Thompson Conteh - while I know the love for soccer is strong in the UK but the chances a guy from Sierra Leon who played a couple years in America's MLS league in the early 2000s seemed nonexistent

Silas Alexander - local radio host based out of America's 38th largest city shouldn't really have a prayer of a qualifying obit, in all honesty

I gave serious thought (about a minute and a half) to offering Her Majesty a place in the squad.

Miguel van Damme: I honestly have no idea how to judge him. I would have picked him had a lot of people not dropped him (or at least said they did).

Rob Burrow: He's had a rapid decline, but I don't think it's that rapid, really.

Shannen Doherty: I haven't a shred of the same feeling on her as many others on this forum. Tmk she has basically the same cancer as ONJ and is much younger. Still out in public every now and then.

Derek Draper: Seems to be doing much better which is great for him.

Linda Nolan: I don't particularly agree with Joey's sentiment. She looks leagues better than her sister who is cancer-free. I don't think this is the year.

Bill Turnbull: I just got disinterested.

Tom Weiskopf: His cancer seems to be pretty contained. I dropped quite a few people with pancan because their treatment seems to be pretty good. Larry Pressler had an interview in December and looked totally fine.

James Whale: For all the cancer he has he seems to be totally fine.

Yeah, his appearance at Bob Dole's funeral made me lose a lot of interest in him.

One more name that I completely cut out of everything due to QOability and fame is Pu Wenqing. Suffering from advanced lung cancer.

Linda Nolan/Shannen Doherty - Like others on the forum, I just don't believe they're at death's door.

Maria Farmer - Undoubtedly ill, but her twitter is an absolute headache and tweets utter bullshit 24/7, also mentioned that some doctors thought she was a hypochondriac, she will probably be a unique for someone this year but I've had enough of her.

Jim Molan - diagnosed with an 'aggressive form of cancer'. Still relatively active so I don't think he's in imminent danger.

Jason Becker/Steve Gleason/Ady Barkan - I didn't want more than one ALS motherfucker on my team, although out of these 3 I would've picked Jason Becker due to his hospitalisation last year.

Tim Bilton - Still as active as ever on social media. Of course he can have a quick downturn but I think there's more dying candidates out there.

Jake Roberts - Bored of him. Although it was incredibly tempting to include him after the COVID diagnosis.

TJ Ducklo - Stage 4 cancer, seems a bit quiet as of late, just couldn't find room for him.

After much self deliberation I have decided to include Tom Smith even though I find his entire existence dull, even his basic ass name. I just know I'd kick myself if he kicked the bucket this year without including him in my team.

Pretty sure his cancer was prostate cancer so yeah, unlikely to score this year

Last 10 out in ddp

Julia Reichert and Russell Bishop

Bishop was just a bad notetaking error despite him being a known name and a pick by me in other pools,Reichert was just overthinking and not wanting to load up on 7 point picks. These are probably the 2 non picks I will regret most

Antonio Inoki-Prolly fecked but my gut says he could see 2023

Trintignat-see above

Jason Becker-I think other ALS names are more fecked

Milos Zeman-Probably will be a 10 point pick, feel he might sneak the year out

Tom Parker-Could go tomorrow, could go in 2024 really can't get a sense either way.

Tom Smith/Shannon Doherty-see above

Dennis Haskins-Going for a unique with him was tempting, based solely on my gut. He hasn't posted on social media or been seen in public since 2019. Was not involved with the recent Saved By The Bell

reboot or released any kind of statement when Dustin Diamond passed away. Very unusual someone who had spent the last 20 years since SBTB on the autograph circut and hanging out with fans at bars and stripclubs to just vanish.
