INVERSE DEAD POOL 2022

Welcome to the 11th edition of the Inverse Dead Pool, the nice dead pool where you don't want your picks to die.

How to play

  • The game starts when I post a list of this year's 50 most popular Derby Dead Pool picks. From this list of 50, you must pick 25 people who you think will SURVIVE the year. The premise is to AVOID picking people who will die.
  • Rank your picks – from least likely to die to most likely to die. You receive points according to their position on your team – 25 points if your #1 pick dies, 24 points if your #2 pick dies, and so on, down to 1 point if your #25 pick dies, and 0 points if anyone you haven't picked dies.
  • You do NOT want points. The winner is the player with the fewest points at the end of the year (Dec 31, 23.59 GMT).
  • You may also pick a 26th name as a substitute, in case one of your picks dies before the submission deadline. If that happens, everyone in a lower position on your team moves up a place, and your substitute is drafted in at #25.
  • If any picks die during the submission period, then the 51st most popular name (which I'll reveal alongside the top 50) becomes an eligible pick. This means the 51st name can be your substitute, but can't initially be on your main team.
  • Once you have a team ready, post it in this thread.
  • If you amend your team after posting it (you may want to do this if, for example, the 51st name was your substitute, they've come into play, and you want to rank them somewhere other than the default #25), then please post again in this thread to clarify what you've changed. You may not amend your team after the submission deadline.

Tie break details

  • If two or more players are tied at the end of the year, the winner is the player with the fewest hits.
  • If all tied players have an equal amount of hits, then the winner is whichever of these tied players had the fewest points most recently (i.e. whoever had the most recent pick to die, whoever ranked that pick lower if all tied players picked them, whoever had the second most recent pick to die if those are the same, etc).
  • If all tied players have the exact same hits in the exact same positions (or if they achieve a heretofore-unachieved perfect score of 0), the tie is not broken – all tied players share victory.

Congratulations to our previous winners...

At the time of posting, the game has not started yet. At some point in the coming days, I expect a DDP messenger owl will slide into my DMs with this year's top 50 names. Once that happens, I will post them in this thread – I'm keeping the above post reserved for that – and you'll have a week to cobble your teams together. I'm just starting this thread early (er, actually several days later than previous years) so that we're ready to go when that happens.

This is my first time hosting anything on this forum, so lots of potential for me to accidentally blow something up or trip over my own balls and die here. Some questions/comments for the community, if you have any input:

- I've tried to rewrite the rules for maximum clarity, without – hopefully – changing any of them. But if you see anything that's got lost in translation, let me know!

- The end date, I think, should match the Derby Dead Pool, so can I just check, is this...

...the exact time the DDP closes to new hits? I thought maybe they had a 24-hour sort of grace period for end-of-the-year hits that only make the news on January 1, but I don't see anything about that in the DDP rules, and victory was being declared in the Derby Dead Pool 2021 thread (and indeed the Inverse Dead Pool 2021 thread) on January 1, so I may have misremembered that.

- Also, is everyone happy with...

...this? Because another possible tie break (a third and final one) that I'm thinking of is: whichever tied player posted their team first wins. After all, don't players who post closer to the deadline (myself included) have a minor advantage in being able to compare their own teams to everyone else's? Under the current system, you could theoretically have a player forced to share victory with someone who copied and pasted their team. Would people object to me implementing that extra tie break? Maybe you're all sharing caring folks who love a tie.

I would have an issue with that tie-break rule, for 2 reasons.

1. It is a possible (albeit highly unlikely) scenario that in a slow year of only 1 or 2 hits, 2 people could coincidently have the same 1 or 2 hits in the same position, even though the remainder of their teams are very different. I don't see that it is fair in that situation to award it to the person who submitted first.

If you are concerned about a cut-and-paste job (why would anyone bother?), then just chuck out any clearly plagiarised team.

2. As someone who lives his life by doing everything either at, or shortly after, the last minute, I have a moral objection to anything that favours the smug self-righteous judgmental early-bird pricks :shoot:

It's still a few days before I send the "official" drop 50 to macho, but Burgess, Poitier, and Jana Bennett all would've been Inverse playable if they didn't die. Who among them actually made the drop 40... my lips are sealed.
