First ever recipient of an animals heart.  Modern medicine at its finest.  Guess they saved his bacon.

I wonder how long he's got now. Wasn't famous before the operation, but confident he'll get a QO when he dies.

If he does, I'm sure he can have the number 50 position.

At this stade, the fact that his body didn’t rejected the heart and that he hasn’t died yet is already amazing ! If he lasts more than a month, which I don’t think will happen, he’d be a great addition to the immortals thread as the first man to live with an animal heart !

I noticed there are no pictures of him after the transplant (the picture of him with the doctor was before). The surgery being "successful" after 3 days doesn't say much, aside from the fact that the heart hasn't stopped or been rejected straight away.

Surely he's famous only for being ill?

Therefore he could not be considered for the DL.

Of all the SP references, the episode where they rip on Honey Boo Boo (and she gets a pig heart transplant) is definitely the most apt here

A heart is just a mechanism to pump out blood etc. Don't see why it wouldn't work.

Now if he had a brain transplant and got a pig's brain, that would be something.

Good point. However, we had Bill Gates dad on the list and apart from being Bill Gates dad, I don't know what he was famous for.

Having said that, he's a famous first.

One for the committee to decide on.

That's a philosophical dilemma, if he had a brain transplant we could say that actually it was the pig that had a transplant of his entire body...

Found guilty of stabbing someone in 1988 leaving his victim paralysed.   I'll try to post the BBC news link.

There’s a joke somewhere, can’t find it but I think it would be really fun. Weird though.

They are calling it a great success that he's lived longer than the first human heart recipient. It's already a month. Sounds like they expect him to die any day though.

Dead, according to BBC Breaking News alert on my phone.

Damn, how could anybody has seen that getting an animal’s heart isn’t a good sign of longevity

Indeed. Though he was told it would be a complete shot in the dark, and he chose to go along with it anyway.

Still, he lasted for 2 months. In 1964 they tried the same procedure with a chimpanzee heart, and the patient died within hours.

Well you say that - a lot of lessons will be learned by the doctors off this as it's almost impossible to get human guinea pigs for this sort of thing. I would not be surprised if this surgery becomes mildly successful by the time I hit pensionable age.

I'll take Percy Pig's ticker, please!
