You have a point.  "The dead of 2023" sounds like "The dead of night".

Born in Romania of all places.

Thank you! I wasn't sure at the time of that post. I edited his name out of it.

On 1 January 2023, Valentin Ipolitovich Kupny died at the age of 87 after a long illness.  

Valentyn Kupny was a unique specialist in the field of nuclear energy and safety, author of dozens of scientific works and developments. At his time, he was the head of Zaporizhzhya NPP. He began his work in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in 1988. From 1989 through 2000, he worked at the Chernobyl NPP with its most complex object - the Object Shelter - and implemented the Shelter Implementation Plan to transform the Object Shelter into an ecologically safe system.

Baseball coach Cliff Gustafon died today. Looks like he won several awards, including 2 'national coach of the year' awards. He coached for a quite famous team in America; The Texas Longhorns.
