Funny you should mention promises. Care to stick to your 5lbs of coffee promise you made in this very pool?

I'm still waiting for those "Howard Marks wont die" curly wurlys.

INVERSE DEAD POOL 2023

Welcome to the 12th edition of the Inverse Dead Pool, the nice dead pool where you don't want your picks to die.

How to play

  • Rank your picks – from least likely to die to most likely to die. You receive points according to their position on your team – 25 points if your #1 pick dies, 24 points if your #2 pick dies, and so on, down to 1 point if your #25 pick dies, and 0 points if anyone you haven't picked dies.

I think we all are numbering them correctly, except you.

We all list from #1 to #25 based on the above rule. If you number from #25 to #1, it's upside down. But I'm sure the runner knows what you mean. ;)

Sorry, I was unclear.  What I meant was, for ease of scoring, shouldn't the lists be posted so that when a name dies, you get the point score right next to the name, instead of having to convert the #11 name to the point value that #11 gives you when you count down from 25?  It seems an unnecessary complication.  But carry on.  Just an observation.

Oh yeah, but the runner makes the rules, not me or anyone else. Probably has some sort of conversion table, ha!

Your way sounds sensible. It's just out of kilter with everyone else. Having run a pool, believe me, consistency is a boon. All I normally asked for is clarity on who you are picking, proper spelling and the like.

Might be a way forward, it's up to the guy in charge.

I don't know if that's necessarily more intuitive than your top pick, the person you think is least likely to die, being your "#1" – leaving the points conversion to be done off-site on the host's OpenOffice spreadsheet – but I don't have a strong opinion on this! As far as I'm concerned, the only reason for the rules to specify the formatting is to explain the scoring system, and so they just describe the way it always has been done. If there's widespread formatting dissent amongst players, the rules can be updated to reflect that!

IMHO, it is the host’s prerogative to specify how they want the teams submitted, and the players should follow the instructions, regardless of how illogical they believe them to be. I would imagine that most game runners have their own spreadsheets for scoring, designed around the scoring system of that particular pool, and the entry method for teams is to make it easier to enter the names into that particular spreadsheet. So any deviation from the entry method specified, rather than being clever or helpful, is just likely to make more work for the host, which they really don’t need.
Having said that, the rules of this game don’t specify how the names should be numbered (so I didn’t), just that they should be ranked in order of least likely to die etc. So it possibly makes no difference whether they are numbered 1-25 or vice versa, other than sowing some confusion.

I don’t understand why this is suddenly difficult to comprehend. 1 = most likely to survive, sliding scale down to 25 from there, leave the scoring in the host’s capable hands if you can’t do the simple sums yourself.

I am once again posting a team on behalf of my mother. We had to go for a drive, so I printed the list off and sat in the passenger seat talking a ranking out of her.

It's probably just as well you're running this and it's your list/picture. The format of that submission would likely drive a number of game runners to an apoplectic level that  could power a city for a day or two (never mind numbers up/numbers down eh?)

I've just finished scrutinising all teams for irregularities. @The Unknown Man, there's a couple of errors on your team – you've got Michael J. Fox, who isn't (quite) one of the 50 playable names, at #12, and duplicate Rhod Gilberts at #18 and #23 – but fortunately, you have two eligible substitutes, so you don't need to do anything. I've removed Michael and the lower Rhod from your team on my spreadsheet, and your subs, Tony Bennett and Randy Jackson, will compete at #24 and #25.

Everything else looks fine, and we've got a nice round 50 players, so time to crack out the bold red text: SUBMISSIONS OFFICIALLY CLOSED.
