The Beautiful South has had an easy ride, particularly considering how average the song is.

I don't agree but if that is the case it is surely a damning judgement on the quality of the opposition

I think once again it has avoided the chop thanks to all the polarising (and almost always more interesting) stuff; there was a pile of dreck to sort out at the start of the game, and since then the likes of Queen and The KLF have been bouncing up and down the score sheet like Katie Price on a rock hard wang while TBS sits under the radar.

It's meh. I'd not be reaching for the off switch in a rush like some of the early fallers, but well, meh.

I think I probably have two failings once the obvious dreck has been cleared

I don't really like soppy love songs and power ballads, there are a few I love, but they have to get over a very high bar compared to what other people seem to like. So good or not I end up downvoting them.

I'll nearly always choose something different that pushed the edges when released over overplayed songs no matter how good they are.

These skew my voting and I know it.

Novelty songs need to get in the bin first. The irritating and the overplayed come next. Then by the time I’d like to remove the middle-of-the-road shite, I’m normally scoring to protect something else. That’s how the bland stuff gets through.

Plus votes are easy: which song makes me feel the best?

Re TBS, I don't care for the song mainly because I don't like the singer's voice.

As observed in the other thread, it's more down to what's the most agreeable song(s) across the board. Nobody seems to dislike it enough to spend their downvotes, so atop it sits.

It's a dirty game. Colluding and block voting for sure, based on how some tracks have been sitting happily in the top 3 for days to suddenly get a slew of -6 and are dead within 36 hours. Personal grudge voting based on another poster's preferences and doing the exact opposite at the first opportunity. Wee Jum's one-man Madonna takedowns. Fascinating, in part.

I think that's probably more to do with what's already been eliminated.  People tend to vote down either the songs they most dislike or songs that are posing a threat to their favourites. When the favourites and the disliked songs are gone, it leaves them free to use their downvotes elsewhere.

As I said to SC, this is just petty and small-minded and goes against the aim of this game.

My controversial way of deciding is to upvote songs I like. While there's an obvious favourite in need of the help at the moment, I also like all of Seal's big 90s hits but Adamski doesn't need my help (and would be 2nd place).

As for The Beautiful South, I prefer other songs of theirs, but I do love how a song can produce as varying reactions as Tom Ewing:

Quote

What we have is more a sketch than a track – a bit of observational comedy, or a scene from a ‘bittersweet’ sitcom. Isn’t it funny how guys say they want a little time….? The music backs that up – discreet punchline flourishes between the lite-pop verses letting on we’re listening to something a bit wry. The problem is, pop song is always multi-layered – you’ve always got the arrangement and the lyrics and the vocal performance reinforcing or trading off against one another. So pop is full of unreliable narrators, conflicted dickheads, people who say one thing and mean another. And while undermining cliches is clever, it’s even more clever if you don’t have to point it out

To It's Just Rock n Roll:

Quote

A song of female empowerment, the lyrics are stunningly good too. The back and forth is brilliant and song tells a brilliant tale. As with so many of these songs, it has an endless charm and is impossibly catchy.

Can't imagine LadBaby inspiring anything other than "fuck off" by comparison!
