Two of my favourites were bottom 2. So downvoted a cover which always annoyed me. Also, if a 90s lad can admit Relight My Fire (or indeed, any Take That song) has some merit, it must do.

To say the least.  Let’s see if it was just as bad in the States (spoiler: it was).

1. At least if you were going to pick a Right Said Fred choon wouldn’t it be I’m Too Sexy? (#1 Feb 1992). They were clearly a one hit wonder, and whatever that thing is on the list was never played over here—thank God.  How could your country get it so wrong?  I could almost get behind the proper RSF song had it been listed.

2a. We must live on two different planets (well we certainly have different demographics).  ‘Jump’ by Kris Kross was #1 for EIGHT WEEKS (May-June 1992) but hip-hop wasn’t a thing over there.  Your loss.

2b. See also: Baby Got Back by Sir-Mix-a-Lot (FIVE weeks at #1 July 1992).

2c. See also (to some extent): Informer by Snow was #1 for SEVEN weeks (March-April 1993).

It’s a great song, wtf were you listening to? Apparently Take That and Mr Blobby lmfao.

All in all our list of #1 songs was just as bad unless you like black r&b resurgence shite, but there were a few good fun songs y’all missed.  I think we can see when music really hit the skids (1991-1996 or so).

SC

1. I'm Too Sexy got stuck behind the never ending 16 weeks of Bryan Adams in 1991. I believe its one of the most successful songs to have been in the top 3 but never UK number one. Deeply Dipply got a bit of Previous Oscar Snub reaction, but was also a camp novelty hit at the time.

Deeply dippy 'bout the curves you've got
Deeply hot
Hot for the curves you've got

Shakespearean lyrics, right.

Moving on...

2a. Kriss Kross were huge here, but lost number one to the KWS's saccharine Please Dont Go. Which often happens in the charts, but that lot had a B-side called Game Boy so I think they cynically nabbed the crucial sales off younger fans of the Nintendo megabeast at the time too. Like how Simon Cowell managed a top 5 hit in 1992 just by linking himself to the WWF wrestling.

2b. Sir Mix-a-lot didn't break the top 40 here. Needed more imported US 90s humour first...

2c. Snow's whingy middle class wannabe gangster rap did make the top 2, but the British public decided that Shaggy and the uber Scottish Bluebells were more worthy of the number one slot. They were right.

Don't knock the Bluebells. Top bunch of lads. Plus one of them shagged Claire Grogan and Siobhan Fahey.

2d. Ah, Mr Blobby.

To most - ie anyone over the age of 8 - he looked like an unfunny giant pink cock that harassed people.

To the target audience, he was bloody hilarious, with his stupid language and falling down all the time.

Basically, he was a kids TV entertainer who had 15 minutes of fame in the mid-90s. The team behind him put out a song in late 1993 thinking kids would get their parents to buy the single. It was cynical and a money grab. It worked. My parents refused to buy it for me, but luckily my uncle did - and apparently smirked at Dad as he handed over the present!

It's not even a matter of taste. Wee kids aren't expected to have music taste. They just like stupid things falling over. Which Mr Blobby did for a few months, then got forgotten.

That Mr Blobby prevented Take That having a Christmas number one, however, will never NOT be hilarious.

The original concept of Mr Blobby was quite funny.  Celebrities thought they were part of a new kids show where they would inform the loveable character about their specialist subject but when it came to the take Mr Blobby would cause chaos.

The original segment with Garth Crooks trying to explain the offside rule is probably the best example.

There was a wonderful moment a couple of years later at a Test Match where Richie Beneau saw a member of the crowd in a Mr Blobby costume and was clearly nonplussed and described him as "somesort of egg man"

My dear late Mother-in-law thought Mr Blobby was great and even knitted Mr Blobbies for her Grandchildren

Mr Tumble and Noseybonk are creepy sods too - I think this is true of most kids stuff like that when you aren't the target audience at the time they're around?

So I spent an hour of my life I canna get back listening to about 10-12 songs I had no idea what they were.  As usual, a few surprises I kinda like, a few that suck but I understand why they may be popular.

These three,however, are just dreadful:

Mr Blobby (amusing or otherwise)

Bluebells (ooof) (is it a Scots thang, msc?)

Tasmin Archer (a very disappointing black woman that sings monotone (i.e. she canna sing), while Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are busy topping the charts in the States (don’t blame SirC).  She can’t sing.  Did I mention she can’t sing?

@msc I don’t see Shaggy/Snow as either/or.  They should both be on this list at the expense of a good handful of lesser songs.

I knew the KWS song but needed reminding and it’s good enough.  Boring, perhaps, and uninspiring.  But hey they won Best New Artist at the Brit Awards so there’s that.

So Scottish one of them taught at Stow College, Glasgow.  They also showed up on Still Game. They were part of the indy lot with Edwyn Collins in the early 80s, and Young at Heart was written by the aforementioned Bananarama sex symbol Ms Fahey, who was dating one of the Bluebells at the time. In the 90s, it was used for a long running car advert (Volkswagen, iirc?) and the public decided they loved it.

Also, this was when Top of the Pops decided to can the mimed performances, and their copy of Young at Heart went too long in the instrumental bit, so the band would add bits on the show for fun - I remember them adding an impromptu reference to No Limit from the time, for example.

(And note, I never said the Mr Blobby song was good at any point!)

Love the Erasure video  :D but without it the song's just a competent cover.
