I would not baulk at 00s I think it would be an education and I think it would be better than the late 90s for me

The first round would take forever - have you seen how many number ones there were in 2000? Definitely quantity over quality too with the biggest seller of the year being Bob the Builder!

Tbf there is at least one No.1 of the 50s I really really enjoy, it's Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney! What a bop! :wub:

The 1950s would theoretically be shorter, given that the charts only started in November of 1952, and there was only one no.1 for that year (Al Martino's Here in My Heart, 9 weeks at no.1).

In any case, I'm not very motivated to play a KoS from the 50s...

An idea could be is to gather up the top 5 songs for each year, 1953-1959 + the one song from 1952 and just do one giant round for the 50s.

We could actually do that.

But after the 60s the No.2 songs should come first, that would be fair.

Yes, the No. 2 songs should definitely start after the quick round for the 1950s list of  36 songs is complete.

And so, the number of songs left that I don’t dislike drops to two. Both are by Elvis, and one of them is on a double A-side with a pile of litter.

The charts in the early 1960s were a fuck side worse than in the early 2010s, and that really is saying something.

Worth noting that the now departed She Loves You was not just The Beatles' biggest-selling single but the biggest-selling single of the whole decade.

I liked the Beatles when I was about 6, but I also liked Cliff then too.

There's a number of Beatles songs I like but they come later in the decade. Help and Eleanor Rigby were number ones I presume.

Cliff is weird. His CV alternates between the Shadows, some good pop and his Christian stuff which is blatantly not for me. I can usually find something likable by most artists if I try, within reason, but Cliff Richard has the biggest jump between "actually that's quite good" and "I never want to hear this again"...

My Grandpa Jerry, may he rest in peace, was a big fan of Gerry and the Pacemakers in his early years. He was born in a small town four hours South of Chicago and I wonder how he found Gerry. Probably had something to do with his name.

Anyway, the music isn't very good.

I like later Beatles output, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, Here Comes the Sun, a few others.

Cliff's career is like that 'Three Ages of Elvis' bit in Father Ted. Summer Holiday, Congratulations and Devil Woman are alright. I (mostly ironically) enjoy Mistletoe and Wine, and Saviour's Day is wonderfully naff.

I want to like the Ray Charles song, but those backing singers are atrocious. That style was sadly common in those days.

Yes, that may have been what sunk Sailor in the last round. Another great song marred by overpowering backing singers.
