Re. the planned no.2s game, I saw A1 perform at Mightly Hoopla on Sunday. They pointed out that while a-ha didn't manage to get Take On Me to the top, they did. Not sure if there are any other examples of no.2s that made it to no.1 later on, either as covers or rereleases?

Well, even a stopped clock (American calendar) is right twice a day (twelve times a year).

I have never heard either of those Against All Odds covers and I hope it remains that way. Just the thought of Westlife makes me cold with horror

I've never heard of this song nor Black Legend. Seems to be a fairly strong tendency for the more successful versions to be exponentially worse in terms of quality. Do you think they are basically able to unjustifiably leverage the legacy of their superior no.2 predecessors?

No, I don't think there's any crossover/leftover positive feelings at all. It will have done it all on its own.

As someone who bought a Barry White single in the 70s (not this one admittedly) I'd long since given up buying singles (and largely listening to current chart music) by 2000 and have no recollection of this cover at all.

It's barely a cover at all. You've got a no-name impersonating Barry White (presumably his team refused to let them use his original vocals). Then at the end of every chorus you hear this booming beat and synth with no sense of key that sounds like it's playing from a gym hall, then a bunch of canned applause for Fake Barry White. This reached #1. A head-scratcher.
