Football Manager Sacking Bingo 3

Recommended Posts

It is 3 years since the last round of this game started and nearly a year since it finished but with another season about to commence and sacking taking place at an astonishing rate these days, surely the next round shouldn't last as long!

The last game took long enough to finish that I ended up coming out on top, and with no Miracle Aligner around, and the support of Buffalo Phil and Great Uncle Bulgaria, I am happy to step into the breach of running what should be a relatively stress-free game (for everyone apart from those whose jobs are at stake!) After all, I've lurked around here long enough without actually running anything, about time I did something useful!

This seems to have crept up on us, such that the 2023-24 EFL season starts next Friday (July 4th), so time's ticking to get this up and running! Entries are valid until midday BST on Friday August 4th 2023 via DM or you can post on the thread - but your picks are liable to be stolen! That gives you just over a week!

Rules are pretty straightforward:

  1. Submit a team of 20 names. (Plus subs, but with only a week to go until the game starts, one or two subs max should be all that's needed).
  2. The first person to have all 20 names they chose leave their club (this can be due to resignation, termination, mutual termination, changing club or any other form of sacking) wins. It's as simple as that.
  3. Valid Leagues are any 2023-24 members of:

  • English Premier League
  • English Championship
  • English League One
  • English League Two
  • English National League
  • English National League North
  • English National League South
  • Scottish Premiership
  • Scottish Championship
  • Scottish League One
  • Scottish League Two
  • Welsh Premier League
  • Welsh Cymru Alliance League
  • Northern Irish Football League Premiership
  • Northern Irish Football League Championship

(I'll be reliant on your notifying me if your picks have gone in some of the more obscure leagues, mind you!)

The last round saw 5 entrants, but it would be great if we could get a few more of you involved - I know there are plenty of football fans on here and the fruit is ripe for the picking (14 sackings across 11 Premier League clubs during last season, more since the season ended, and only 32 of the 92 league managers have been in charge longer than last summer!) so feel free to get involved. The more the merrier, it's just a bit of fun and gives us something to talk about between deaths.

Good luck!

I have put a team in but it is based on my very limited knowledge of the game but it should mean I have more skin in the game when watching Final Score while visiting my Father-in-Law

The additions of @maryportfuncity and @Sly Ronnie give us a final total of 11 entries, which have all been checked and ratified. I'll get the master lists up later today and the action gets underway tonight! I think the record (certainly in recent times) from the start of a season is Frank de Boer at Crystal Palace, who was sacked after 4 games, so, you know, we may have to wait a couple of weeks to get the ball rolling! But I don't think it will take too long...

In 2008 Carlisle parted company with Neil McDonald around 10-30 am on Monday, two days after the season kicked off and Carlisle drew their first game. "Footballing reasons" were cited and anyone disputing that online on a message board almost 15 years later is still prone to being taken down rapidly. Whether the fact the club's record transfer had gone through late on Friday and the money had only moved on the Monday morning might be linked to McDonald's departure is still discussed over pints. So too, McDonald's previous employment as assistant to Big Sam.

Of course this is old news now so probably best just BUNGed in the folder marked history, eh?

Well, as a Blackburn fan, a noisy minority of our fans on the Twittersphere have been convinced for at least a month that Jon Dahl Tomasson is on the brink of quitting, so you never know, we might have a hit sooner than we think!

Aye, and he isn't on my team

My bad re McDonald, btw - 2007, not 2008 - and that record signing - Joe Garner - is back at the club, again

He's not on mine either, I'm not tempting fate, would be gutted to lose him. And only on 2 teams out of the 11.

Lots of Blackburn links in this story - McDonald was Big Sam's assistant at Blackburn, probably not long after he left Carlisle. Joe Garner came through Rovers' academy but didn't make the grade, done OK elsewhere but never reached the heights that suggest we made the wrong call.

Posted mine above. I did originally have Frank Lampard for Chelsea but as pointed out he's only temping. So replaced with Dino Maamria who manages Burton Albion.

I've posted the Master List at the top of Page 1, thought it was best doing it that way rather than a long list of teams but feel free to post your team on the thread for easy reading.

  • 17 of the 20 Premier League managers were chosen, so expect Unai Emery, Eric ten Hag and Eddie Howe to lose their jobs at some point this season! (ten Hag was a substitute but not picked on any teams).
  • I said yesterday that all 24 Championship managers were in play, but actually that wasn't correct. Nobody had picked Hull's Leon Rosenior...until Sly Ronnie's picks came through this morning that is!
  • Only half of the League One managers are in play but two-thirds of the League Two managers have been picked.
  • In the minor leagues (sorry Scots fans), the most picked league is National League South with 6 picks, closely followed by the Scottish Premiership and Championship  with 5 apiece.
  • All MariNisia's picks came from the (English) Premiership and Championship, while Diego picked from every possible league apart from the Welsh Alliance League (which appears in the list I copied but was disbanded between the start of Game 2 and Game 3!).
  • Most popular picks are: Julen Lopetegui (Wolves - 7), Sean Dyche (Everton - 7), Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth - 6), Roy Hodgson (Crystal Palace - 6) and Valerien Ismael (Watford - 6).

In the first match of the season, Southampton have beaten Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, so it's a good start for Russell Martin and Xisco Munoz is one step closer to the chop! Good luck everybody.

Don't know whether this is bad for Manchester United but Wrexham beat them in a friendly 3-1 recently.
